@@limc0225 I beat it several times in the 90s when I was just a kid 😁 But that was on difficulty: easy lol. It definitely took me a long time and a lot of lives and a lot of patience.
Fantastic run, but really want to point out an incredible commentary - this is the kind of informative, fun, engaging and well paced commentary that can bring newcomers into the speed running community and allow it to grow and flourish.
i am so thrilled that nichole and cajink were willing to put in such amazing effort for my commentary. i wouldn't change a thing. thank you for the kind words.
This run is an absolute rollercoaster to watch. At any moment you're either thinking "how did Eight do that" or "was that on purpose", and the commentary did a great job of telling you that yes, it was.
It was fun watching Eight as she goes through this. You could tell that there are things she usually does way better just by some of her facial expressions. Meanwhile I'm sitting here with my jaw to the floor like how are you doing this!! Super fun run with amazing commentary too.
@@Fox211-j2m Yes I remember dying many times when I got to Scar before I realized you had to flip him over if I remember correctly; it's been decades. Haven't watched this whole video yet so I may be wrong.
So sorry I missed this last year and only saw it because of an article I just found today. Amazing run of an amazingly hard game by an amazing runner with amazing commentary.
That monkey level was such a nightmare for me as a kid, I remember when I finally beat it one time (trial and error) and then just died at level 3 lol. It's great to see this run and the other levels, very nostalgic!
Commentary was great in this speedrun. It speaks volumes of speedrunners *and* commentators that they can naturally do something like a GDQ section in their respective homes, when GDQ has become a social event. Think about it like this, IRL they would be sharing a couch and probably understand when one commentator can speak by means of cues. In here, sometimes commentary may overlap, but they never seem to interrupt each other. I've been teaching online this year for obvious reasons, and while I love technology, I needed to point this out - social interactions online require a special skill, and the streamer and commentators really seem to have mastered it.
i never really had trouble with the monkeys level, the part that kept me from beating the game as a kid was getting up the waterfall on the timon and pumba level. after I mastered that finally I got stuck on the lava level playing as adult simba
Can never understand how the meme of this game being difficult took shape. I beat this game a TON as a kid lol Shout out to Eight though. She was fucking this game up FrFr
ironically, the lion king was one of the few plataformers i managed to beat back in the day(cant remember if it was the genesis or the snes version as i had both consoles at diferent times), but with all its BS designs, playing with grown up simba was probably the most rewarding thing they added to the game, and to me, it was the reason i kept playing it.
First job i ever had was highlighting sega games at one of the precursors to gamestop. This was the featured game i had to play 4 hours a day, 5 days a week.
Love the run already 4 minutes in. Great commentary and gameplay! But is noone gonna recognize the absolute spot on soundtrack on level 1 ? I was jamming so hard..
I never realized how many people never beat this game. I guess I had it on easy LOL. It definitely took me months of figuring out all of the monkey swings and all of the different nuances to beat it. I wonder if I could beat it today 🤔
As a huge Lion King fan, I loved this game so much when it came out. I could actually legit beat this one, and had a much harder time completing the Aladdin game.
On graveyard i once did something that skipped the whole level. I was playing on pc... you can actually cling from the bone structure at the start. i'm pretty surprised this is not used in runs. i will see if i can get a pc copy and replicate it
I did too! I remember the first time I fought scar, I didn't know how to flip him. Second time I still didn't, but got lucky! I would have been 10 or 11. Still remember the feeling of joy.
I remember as a kid id just used to jump through the giraffe at the end of stage 2. Does this work on this version? Used to play the PC version. Just tested it and still got it to work.
I'm surprised to find out that a lot of people never beat this game. As a kid I had like only 10 games, so I've played this game so much that I beated it every time. Great run btw.
Impressive run double impressive for me because I remember the trouble I had with this game as a kid. Did manage to beat it eventually though not in sub 17 minutes.
They briefly explain it in level 2, but if you missed it, Disney wanted the game to be difficult on purpose to prevent kids from beating the game in one session if they rented it. This was to influence kids to buy the game instead.
Wow, what horrible game design. Thanks to the awesome commentators for explaining why the game designers made such terrible decisions to make their game stupidly frustrating. Huge props to the speed runner for making the game look easy.
well, this was actually the norm. games were built to be hard to beat due to tricky if not out right disloyal gameplay shenannigans. aladin was better, but most plataformers were absurdly hard. and belive it or not, this si still one of the best movie based games out there...
There was a reason, and it was... money! The couch hinted at this during Just Can't Wait to be King. Console game rentals were a big thing in the 90s when this was made, and developers knew this. The programmers would be ordered to make very hard levels 2-3 levels in, with the intention of stopping kids from beating the game before they had to return it, with the hope that they'd buy the game instead.
Also designers/programmers were still quit close to arcade machine games development, which were supposed to be hard, so you keep spending your money on continues ;)
I didn't realise this was considered a hard game. Yeah it was difficult but I beat it, took a year of playing on and off. Comix Zone is the game I still haven't beaten, also Gunstar Heroes. Nice run by the way!

I didn't know this game was beatable
yeah somehow it's beatable..
@@limc0225 I had "beaten" it as a kid. Thought that was only by skipping to the last 2 or three levels.
I was stuck at monkey throw stage. Never figured that out.

Fantastic run, but really want to point out an incredible commentary - this is the kind of informative, fun, engaging and well paced commentary that can bring newcomers into the speed running community and allow it to grow and flourish.
Really impressive! I imagine they rehearsed a loooot of times to get it so smooth

This run is an absolute rollercoaster to watch. At any moment you're either thinking "how did Eight do that" or "was that on purpose", and the commentary did a great job of telling you that yes, it was.
A game so hard that even speed runners are at risk of a game over
It's actually very difficult but she makes it looks easy... what a run!!
I wish all speedruns at this event had a commentary like this. This is amazing. Such a great job ladies.
Such a brutal game. Great run.
I'm almost positive that I've never met anyone in person whose beaten it.

Simba avenges his father by damage boosting through his childhood and learning how to attack frame-perfectly. What an amazing run!
One of my favourite runs of all time! So tense!
I remember never beating this game as I kid because I got stuck
dem giraffe use to mess me up.
I got all the way to Scar but couldn't figure out how to beat him

Here I am, almost 30, still can’t beat the second level.
Im happy im not the only one xD
Man, I loved and hated this game as a kid. Great run and commentary!

Best GDQ commentary ever.
10/10 Commentary
I love how half the commentary is "It looks easy when a WR speedrunner does it, but seriously, this game will murder you."
A life goal is to beat this game,so super impressive.
Respect!!!!!!!! One of the most brutal games from my childhood and she completely KILLED it!!! Awesome run!!!
SKIPS THE LAVA LEVEL
_she has the power of the gods_
Wait this game has an ending I thought graveyard was the final level of was sooo hard
Playing this game on difficult? Madness! Also, impressive
I have beaten this game quite a few times, but I can't actually imagine speedrunning it on difficult.
Great run Eight!

loved watching her kick this game’s ass, after it got mine so much as a kid!
What a fun run and great commentary!!!
I still have nightmares about the second level
The latency killing me so glad they are still running the event
I never got past those freaking monkies
jesus, both commentators sound like they're taking after blechy and that's absolutely a compliment.
I remember beating this game as a kid. How on earth did I figure out these monkeys???
Great run and even better commentary, gives a great insight to the run!

I remember never beating scar cause the game never tells you that you can throw enemies and that you need to in order to beat scar
Great run with fantastic commentary!
I don't think I ever made it past the waterfall.
Great commentary, great run

Disney's Lion King: the original Dark Souls

So, the Dark Souls of Disney games?
I've always wondered if this game was legitimately hard, or just badly designed 🤔
What are your thoughts?

Gotta say I never completed the Genesis version but I did beat the GameGear version. Still a hard but fun game.
It's interesting that the genesis Aladdin game made by the same guys was really easy, but Lion King was hardcore..
