    I just finished replacing the water pump, thermostat, and engine coolant flange (Mickey) on my 2017 X5. This video is super helpful. I sourced my parts from FCP Euro, and they arrived swiftly. The job took the better part of a day in my home's garage. I used ramps to lift the front of the vehicle. I did not need the compound pliers. Medium sized needle nose pliers worked fine for removing the driver's side rubber block. A long flathead screw driver is helpful for pushing the plastic clips out of the way to remove the fan. Flipping in the driver's side fan flange is key to removing the fan assembly. My vehicle's hoses wiggled off with some effort once the hose clamps were loosened. I did not need a hose pick. I also did not need to remove the passenger side wheel or fender liner to get to the upper water pump mounting bolt. I used a swivel and long extension--there is a window to the front and outer bottom area to remove the upper mounting bolt. Once all the hoses were reconnected, I used a cheap universal radiator refill funnel ($26 at Amazon) to refill the coolant reservoir--no fancy vacuum is needed. Before I reinstalled the radiator fan, I activated the water pump using the technique shown at the end of the video (accessory on, climate control temp at max, and step on the gas for 10 secs) to make sure I did not have any leaks. You can turn on the pump to refill the system as long the system doesn't think the level is too low. The fan doesn't have to be connected. There was a lot of air purged, and refill took about 1.8 gallons of 50:50 water antifreeze. The whole job makes a big mess--especially disconnecting the first hose. Despite having a catch basin, I consumed more than one roll of shop towels. It's tedious.

    Best suggestion was approaching the top water pump bolt from the side. Also, upgrading the top flange from the block is easy while the fan is out.

    Lol yes you can get it out of the bottom from the side, DO NOT do it….Please follow his directions though….. where the hell was this video 4 years ago, I fought this pump for hours and gave up and came back and pulled it the through the side the next morning. Thank you for this DIY !! I am now less worried about the next failure in 30k.
    Also the tell tail for this pump failure, is the fan running at full tilt for longs periods of time mine started doing it about a week before it died at 45k on my E70.

    Thanks for this video. It was a great help. And I really thank you for pointing out the hose flange that fails. I had ordered the pump kit from you, that came with the bolts and coolant as suggested. I'd suggest adding the flange and oring to the suggested parts. Part of the frustration is trying to figure out what I need to order. Having your website suggest all recommended parts for a repair, would be great. I'll have to pickup the flange locally tomorrow to finish this job. And I'm glad I took it out. It fell apart as I removed it.

    Just what I was waiting for, F15 content, but you should always be clear about the engine code for each model in the title to make it easy to search. I have an X50i F15 with N63TU V8 engine which was not covered here.😥 Better ring lighting still encouraged. It would be a really great thing if Norma declared in a document which size O-rings are used in which spigot size connectors. That way we would know which O-rings to keep in stock.

    I have 2013 xdrive35i turbo, M Sport trim and wheel package. My thermostat is not connected to the radiator and have one hose from the waterpump that is "u" shaped and failed, now the hose from the aluminum pipe coming from the direction of the firewall towards the front of the vehicle has a shape 90⁰ bend as well and has now also failed, has this configuration been changed. My water pump is behind the pump, not at the radiator. Have bought most all my parts from you at FCP in the last couple years. Looking for a the better configuration to keep from going back again.

    You should include the flange as part of the replacement. Looks like a garage DIY, but most of us dont have lifts, so will be either on ramps or jackstands. Is there an alternative to removing that top water pump upper mounting bolt without removing the left tire and cover? Its gonna suck to need to remove a tire after its on ramps. It looks like from the top with a Dual Flex Ratchet might be able to reach, but that radiator looks pretty tight on space.

    • @DriverDude100

      You can get to the water pump's upper mounting bolt with a socket, swivel, and extension. You don't have to remove the tire or fender liner.

      It didn't fail on this car. Just replacing it preventatively. Given the wide window in mileage these water pumps tend to fail I personally opt to change at the lower end of the known failure range which is 65K miles.

    Great video Garth. One of my next project. BIG question for you: Lots of discussion on the Forums about those (6) 16mm head (10mm threads) reinforcement plate bolts, as they are "torqued to yield". BMW TIS says to replace them BUT not many do. That being the case, what if you/I torque them to the 56Nm & only do about 45 deg additional.? Is that a bad idea? I wasn't sure I understood your recommendations. Thanks for the Aluminum coolant flange tip, great idea. Thanks again. We need more F15 videos!

    • @GarethFoley
      @GarethFoley 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I do not recommend using less torque angle if reusing the bolts. Doing so will not achieve the desired clamping load on the fasteners and could result in bolts backing out and falling off the vehicle from vibrations. Ideally, these bolts would be replaced with every installation. However, in the real world I assume these bolts are often not replaced and are most likely over torqued when reinstalled (impact guns). I reused these bolts several times over the course of filming DIY videos with the intention to replace them upon wrapping up filming. I had the reinforcement plate on and off the car more times in three weeks than most cars will see in a lifetime of services. I believe these bolts are safe to reuse several times as the final torque achieved with the torque angle is less than the average recommended torque for an M10 10.9 class bolt. I would be cautious about the coating being wiped away over multiple uses. The ZNS3 coating acts as an anti galling agent (and anti corrosion agent) and will be wiped away over several uses. Most bolts BMW recommend replacement on are ZNS3 coated as each installation wipes away this protective layer (which will increase the clamp load on the fastener). Despite these bolts in this specific application being torque angled I don't believe they are truly being tightened to the point of yield.
