The song is based on a book called Johnny got his gun. It’s about a soldier who’s left incapacitated after combat. Basically a prisoner in his own body. Movie scene from film adaptation of the book. Saw this the day it was released. Still get chills. Metallica are ferocious.
Chills, yep. Every time.
Very disturbing book.
I think the movie that Jame Whitmore stars in was released in 1971 or so ... just in time for veitnam?
Metallica bought the rights to the movie so they don't have to pay royalties for it anymore.
@@nullzero Really? Didn't know that...that's pretty awesome.
Metallica's structure and compositions are insane. The buildup to One is unmatched. A masterpiece and you don't have to be a metalhead to appreciate the level of musicianship.
It's so I tentional and hits just as hard now as in 1988 when I was 10.
They were completely enamoured by the video and seemingly ignored the music completely. Geeze.
@@chocolate_squiggle no, they weren't, they actually commented on the musical side.
The crazy thing is, this was Metallica's FIRST music video. They didn't release a music video until their FOURTH album, during the HEIGHT of the MTV craze of the 80's and 90's, they succeeded at becoming a stadium selling out band purely on live shows, word of mouth, and bootleg tape trading. Very little radio play, no tv coverage, no music videos.
Yeah, fans actually hated this video so much because having a video on MTV, especially one with an anti-war message, was considered a "sell out move" that they literally made an alternate video with just the band miming the song in a warehouse
To this day, people still dislike the video and say it ruins the song because of the dialog in the video and the scenes distracting from the lyrics (which basically describe the video)
Infact, people are commenting on this video about how the movie parts ruin the song. I suppose there is no room for tasteful cinematic elements in a world full of people stuck in warehouses miming work
@@neilpatrickhairless I used to think it ruined the video too, but now i think there isn't anything else like it. It's such a distinct video.
@@simonownsyou nah I'm with bald Dougie Howzer on this one. The talking over the magnificent instrumentals destroys the way Metallica uses music to set a tone and feeling.
The instrumentals in this song are absolutely god tier
This album was peak Metallica. They haven't released anything nearly as good, since. Every track is fire, with no fillers.
Everything is God tier. This album.changed so much
@@williamfranklin860Death Magnetic is good (excepting the terrible audio quality of the original album) but it does not reach the level of this album. AJFA and Master of Puppets are the essentials of Metallica
As someone that has been a fan of Metallica since the 80’s….. it’s so weird to think there are people out there that haven’t heard this song.
There isn't. People pretend to be stupid for "reactions."
Metallica has created more jobs than the entire Biden administration off of fake reactions...
or dont automatically know the premise of the song.
It's one of the reasons I'm loving these channels. Seeing these younger folks realize how good our music was, and the meaning it has, is actually great.
I applaud these people that make an effort to find out what we've known for years... that we likely lived during the best era of music in history. I'm 45 and was a major concert hound, and when I actually list all the bands I've seen live, so many younger people are in awe... and that was just life back then. There was always a show to go to, and an awesome band to see.
Right lol
This album/song came out in 88. I joined the Army in 89. Sep 90 is when Saddam invaded Kuwait and we started deploying to Saudi Arabia for Desert Shield and eventually Desert Storm. "Justice for All" was one of the tapes I took with me to Saudi. This song was always in my mind during that whole deployment/Operation. It would be the worst possible outcome of war, trapped in your body and unable to communicate....trapped inside your own head. It's a sobering reminder of the horror of war. It remained a part of the soundtrack of my career of 22 years. I even got to see Metallica in Germany in the early 90s, when I was stationed in Stuttgart. Back when music had MEANING and made you think and feel. Great Reaction.
My uncle was in Desert storm with the Royal Marines.
Totally changed him.
He started drinking heavily and beating the crap out of my Aunt, when he retuned home.
To the point where he left her permanently disabled.
The UK MOD covered the whole thing up.
THATS CRAZY, the day I graduated from AIT bush announced we were going to Kuwait. this whole album was insane, still to this day one of my top twenty most listened to albums.
We took similar paths. I joined in 89, went to D.S. in Sep. of 90 but was lucky enough not to experience any traumatic events.
I joined in 89 too. JIB Shorncliffe. Didn't get to Desert Storm but saw plenty of shit in my 12 years service
I joined the Navy in April of 89. I remember seeing this video the night before I shipped out. I was at a hotel close to MEPS.
This song has every element of what makes a great song. Truly iconic masterpiece.
Great song but the video is annoying. The movie playing with the music is annoying
There are two versions, one with and one without the movie overlay.
@@dylanpage7436 It's a lot to take in if you've never heard the song before, like information overload. But skipping that, I'd say that it adds A LOT. The lyrics themselves are quite few, the video really sets the stage on what's it about.
The movie in the song is "Johnny got his gun." It is a very good movie!
The nurse was cutting off his oxygen but was stopped by the military officer. She feels sympathy for Johnny. There are some other very sad scenes with the nurse. The closing of the door was them putting him "away" since he can't see, hear or feel the sun. They are just going to leave him there until he eventually dies. He wishes for death than live a life trapped in your own body.
I first heard this song when I was a child. I'm now 45 years old and it's still top of my favorites. It's the first song I learned to play on my Fender when I was a teen.
I remember my neighbor Chris bringing the tape over with a smile and just hit play. I was blown wide open into a new dimension of music. I remember it so well
It’s amazing to me that there are still people that haven’t seen or heard this!! It’s cool to watch you guys watch this for the first time!! 🔥🔥
✌🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻👍🏻
So happy you checked this song out. I was introduced to Metallica at a very young age and "One" is my favorite. Learning about Helen Keller in school and trying to imagine what it'd be like to be her, this just took it to a whole darker level.
Too bad the story of Helen Keller was pure horsesh*t.
@matthewc3621 Really? People need to stop believing kids on TickTock are a knowledgeable source of actual facts. Very sad that 60sec videos somehow hold merit over more than a century of history
This song is a true classic! Brings me back to my mid twenties! I listen to many genres, but I admit that my preference is rock and heavy metal.
Metallica actually bought the rights to this movie so they could use it in their video. This was their first ever music video.
It's a beautiful but sad song. I've heard hundreds of times, but it never gets old. Great story song and one of the best songs of all time from metallic.
People hate on Metallica at times, but this is one of the greatest videos of all time. Genius stuff.
People hate on Metallica moreso because of the Napster incident than anything cause people see it as them "pulling up the ladder behind them." That's usually what I seen growing up.
They ended up being right though. You can get millions of streams and make 10 bucks.....@@camobranson09
@@camobranson09 as a huge Metallica fan, a lot of people hated them long before Napster. When you get so big, people always push back. Same concept with Taylor Swift right now.
This CANNOT be your first time?!?
Edit: The look on your face during Kirk's solo proves it is indeed your first time 😂👍👍
"...product of your profession..." was the line from the "Padre" to the doctor. The Padre basically said, you are keeping him alive instead of letting him pass on, so you deal with it. The end with the nurse...she tried to put him out of his misery but was stopped by the doctor. He was still alive after when wheeled into the room. The doors closing and lights fading was just the end of his chances for release. Lost and forgotten in some room to be alone in his own thoughts, whatever they may be.
FADE TO BLACK by Metallica NEXT PLEASE...
I suffered from mad depression when I was using and used to play over and over.
Love your reactions to these.
Keep it up. 🙏 Flawd and Meaux
Great reaction! Years ago I went to a Metallica concert, hearing this live is an awesome experience. Hearing the words and feeling the vibration of the music...totally amazing!
❤🔥🔥 Metallica are amazing story tellers 😢❤
One of the best videos of my youth. I became a Metallica fan the day i saw this video.
The story is one thing, but for me, the musical masterpiece that is this song is really the focus.
This song and video are absolute masterpieces
Did you not hear all them instruments just banging away pure bliss. The skill to put all this together with instruments not a machine, synth or box just talent and instruments ROCKIN-OUT..SEE ALL THEM FANS
Flawlessly brilliant
Love that your doing this type of reaction
This video premiered on MTV it was my introduction to this band. It helped shape my beliefs and helped make me the man I became. This genre of metal helped me incredibly
out of nowhere, a metallica - one reaction, amazing
Flawd good to see you explore metal, as a product of rap going all the way back to sugar Hill gang you'll see how complex of writing skills metal bands have as well
i hope yours becomes the second comment on this video, besides the one at the top currently explaining the video context.
Metal masterpieces like this is what separates Metallica out as the greatest Metal band of all-time. This song still hits me emotionally just like it did when I first heard it as a kid watching MTV back in the late 80's
Really great grasp of the lyrics for a first time listen. The blame on the doctors was new for me. Thank you for that. Subbed
It is always fun to watch someone see/hear this for the first time. The conflict between enjoying the composition and musicianship while experiencing the horror of the lyrics and video stresses people out.
Would love to see you guys react to more Metallica! They are truly master songwriters. Excellent with their instruments as well as lyrical content.
I love this song! Probably my favorite song of theirs. I got to see them last month in Dallas.
It didn’t get any bigger than this when this song came out. I flat wore it out in the car!
My favourite Metallica song! Excellent live!
That was the best reaction to this song iv seen loved it!!!
WOW I'm so glad y'all did this song..... Most importantly you were able to watch the video along with the song.
I have seen several reactors react to this song without the video. Personally I think you need to watch that video when you hear that song. Hearing it is one thing but being able to see the video when you hear it is the ONLY way to feel EXACTLY like y'all did. Great Great job, both of you. As always! 💯🤟🏻🤙🏻
More Metallica please I recently got back into listening to them. My grandfather recently passed and this was the stuff on the radio when I was a kid.
Great reaction on an absolutes masterpiece in all regards, music wies as well as lyrical and visual ! Great job guys! 👏🏻
Been waiting for this…fav reactors reacting to my fav song. ❤ y’all
such a great reaction. loving this. i'm 42 and from a barrio in east la. i respect the prose and depth of unheard-ass, and heard-of too, conscious rappers. i discovered metallica when i was 9 years old. and cause i was a rocker the older fools, gs, taggers, and/or rappers alike, didn't check me much. i fuck with lyricists, with rappers cause it's in me. but i trip watching an og, like you, trip on some stuff that was written and recorded by 20 year old white dudes in 1988. i think metallica and other great rock and rollers alike, were conscious before most fools woke up and started criticizing it, the system, or whatever. or something like that
I was just out of high school when this amazing piece of music history was first released on MTV, when they actually played new music. I waited for the release at my buddies house and we got to hear/watch this fantastic song.
I have 3 favorite songs from METALLICA. 1) Fade To Black 2) Welcome Home (aka Sanitarium and 3) One. 🤘🏻😎🤘🏻
Now that they've reacted to this one, I hope we get the other two you've listed. One and Welcome Home share the top spot in my book and Fade to Black is a very close second.
Glad you did this..
One of their greatest songs ever..
Obviously this video has extra dialog than the song, so not sure if you want to listen to a lyrical version..
Great reactions!
First real metal concert I went to. Still one of my favorites. 🔥 Place was the size of a big HS gym. Lol General admission ftw
Alcohollica!!! 🤘
Yet, they fired Dave mustang for drinking too much.
@@damienheaton7571 not for drinking too much, for doing what he did while drinking lol
YES! 🤟🔥
One of my favorite metallica songs
Solid reaction y’all. Earned a sub
The man who said "Hes not a product of my profession (a preacher-father) he's a product of yours (A combat solder)
You jus witnessed greatness
Very iconic song from my teenage days ! I used to blast this song in my pickup truck !
The "SOS", the "guns" and the "Bombs" are all in this track
I have seen metallic 20 plus times that brings back memories
You know what, I love this reaction. Just like true art. you figured it out by yourself. No googling for the easy way out.
This is the song that brought metallica into the spotlight. I remember the 1st time i heard it, 15 yrs old in 1988, i didnt know guitars could make those noises. It opened up a whole world of bands and music to me
Yeeeeeeeeeees!!!!!
One of the greatest rock songs ever made. Johnny got his gun was supposed to be an anti war song. Good reaction guys.
I missed this reaction but here now. Legendary tune .
This song is a mindfuck.
As others have mentioned, it's based on the film "Johnny got his gun", which was based on the book, which was based on an actual WWI soldier. He was wounded, left blind, deaf, and a quadruple amputee. He was actually carted around like a circus attraction, while basically shut inside his body, unable to see, hear or move. Just left in pain, silence and darkness with no awareness of the outside world.
If you think that's bad, try listening to Motorhead's "1916", also about WWI, but will hit you in the gut even harder. Sabaton also covered that one, but the original from motorhead with Lemmy singing is far more emotional. I've seen some of the biggest, baddest men I've ever known break down in tears from that song. "1916" is based on a British-led battle in which 19,000 men in total died in one day (10,000 British soldiers among them).
I’m not a heavy metal guy really, I like some but def not my main gig, but One has always been monumental to me. The entire composition of it is really humbling. Music used to be art.
Yes
This is my first favorite song from Metallic followed by Welcome Home Sanitarium and Nothing Else Matters & Fade To Black.
true example of when the music behind vocals really follows the lyrics, its crazy good written, almost like watching a movie
Nice reaction, more Metallica please! Do some more recent to balance out, like Inamorata or Halo on Fire. Cheers, and keep it up!
Can we expect more Metallica.?? 🙏
God I hope so!
I'd like to see that Master of Puppets reaction
Yes!!!
Ponder this they were about 24 yrs old when they made this record..phenomenal record the whole thing cheers from Kansas city
10 year old me is alive as 47 year old me. Memories are hard to find with some stuff, but thus blew me headfirst into metal.on that day
Our understanding of suffering is mostly relative to what we experience, most of us aren't able to comprehend the worst of it. I often tell people if you think you have it bad, you could always be Clive Wearing. Clive Wearing was a successful music conductor who contracted a form of encephalitis that attacked his central nervous system. The majority of his memory was wiped out coupled with an inability to form new memories. He is 85 now and likely still spends his day filling a journal with entries like this:
8:31 AM: Now I am really, completely awake.
9:06 AM: Now I am perfectly, overwhelmingly awake.
9:34 AM: Now I am superlatively, actually awake.
In the seven seconds he has to construct a thought he goes to write in his journal, seeing an entry that he does not remember making, draws a line through the old entry and then puts his new thought down before he forgets it and gradually starts marking his entries to dictate to himself which entries were really him. It's nearing 40 years since his infection.
Been a min since been on this channel but dang bro good catch on your female. Cheers 🎉 You popped up when I searched One reactions. This gonna be good for sure. This song is an epic piece that I’ve listened to for years and would sing to myself in my head when I would go though traumatic times (Healthcare can be a bitch working in trauma units). The chorus is so dope.
Metallica is such a tough band man! Great reaction video!
Some amazing nuances are the way the music amps up and gets faster as he becomes more desperate and angry. Even the guitar solo has a very chaotic sound as if his thoughts are spiraling out of control. And the fast-paced drumming sounds like machine gun bursts.
Highly recommend y’all get into the Metallica library and dive deep. Personally I’m not a fan of much that came out after their self titled release usually referred to as the black album but anything off of that and their earlier albums are amazing. Master of puppets would be a great song for you to check out.
have you listened to their new album. a lot of earlier in the career vibes, its pretty good
Одна из любимых песен! И уж точно любимый клип \m/
You are now "One" of us.
I wish i could hear this for the first time again.
The destiny described in this song is so horrific and imaginable turtourus, it humbles any suicidal thought imaginable.
Only _then_ - your not even able to end it.
Your genuine apporoach = new subscriber, keep being u!
Great reaction y'all
The key to listening to this song is to slowly raise the volume up the whole time, so at the end the lyrics take a back seat to the sonic avalanch of those final riffs.
The Grammy award winning song Metallica didn’t get … this a masterpiece from its time it first came out 💯✌️❤️🙏🤘.. holds up today too 💯
Two things to say; 1) Best band ever 🔥🔥🔥🤘🤘🤘 2) Much, much more Metallica 🔥🔥🔥🤘🤘🤘…if you can take the otherworldly heat from these guys that awaits you 🔥🔥🔥🤘🤘🤘
this song is about a dude who lost his arms legs hearing eye sight and can't talk he hooked up to machine that keep him alive
It was a breathing tube. He had damage to his face, so I assume he wasn't able to breath through it.
Best band of all time imo
The military commander stops the nurse from killing Johnny by clamping his breathing tube. He used to feel the passage of time through the warmth of the sun but the commander closes the windows and tells the medical staff to never open them again. Johnny Got His Gun is one of the scariest movies I've ever seen because its such a horrifying existence to imagine.
This is the best song in the world.
The Nurse locked off his breathing tube with some forceps, pushes the air out of his chest and turns away as she can't stand to watch him die.
But the Commissioned Officer walked in and caught her, stopping the mercy kill.
live this song whole different beast. much more breathe taking and stark.excepyionally beautiful.
It's a very powerful interpretation of what the worst outcome of violence, specifically war in this case, can be. A landmine took this characters arms, legs, sight, and hearing. It's not something those who profit off of violence want you to think about. Great react. Thanks
The man who said ''He's not a product of my profession, he's a product of yours." was an Army Chaplain, I believe. I could be mistaken, it's been a while since I watched ''Johnny Got His Gun''.
Such a powerful song and video
Great reaction.
My favorite song by them….FIRE
Metal is fucking deep y'all. DEEP. I hope to see more. Subbed 🤟🤟
This was Metallica's first music video.
She cut his breathing tube. Was holding his chest down. His face was all f'd up from the bomb. It's from a book called "Johnny got his gun." The movie was released in 1971.
Ok this will be fun
Not sure if anyone has mentioned it but I believe the nurse was trying to clamp off, not cut, the tube.
Probably my favourite song of all time, the video makes it hit harder 🔥🤘🤘
🔥 🔥 🔥
