    Parents become like kids and they need the same care they provide you when you were an infant.
    Call your parents daily. Also dont forget about your elderly neighbors. RIP

      @@MrChipDouglas1 my dad passed away a few months ago but before then when his health was deteriorating, they recommended us to send him to a nursing home. He went there and stayed for a few days and we took him RIGHT out and decided never again will we do that to him. I miss him a lot. Our family stayed with him till the end, we took shifts (mom would stay overnight and we would take turns staying throughout the day) and the night he passed my sister and mom was with him.

      You can put them in a home and that's your decision. Your kids will put you in a home and your kids will probably end up in a home.

    My mom suffered from dementia. I’d already resigned from my job to spend weekdays with her while my dad was at work. They went to their beach house on weekends. One day dad told me what he thought was a “funny” story of leaving my mom locked in the house (so she wouldn’t wander away). He turned off the a/c to save money on a very hot day. Mom no longer knew how to turn on the a/c. It got so hot in the house she called 911 and the police broke in and turned the a/c on for her. It was really frightening… especially my father’s absolute cluelessness about the dangers of the situation. That’s when I realized I needed to be with her 7 days a week. So I made the 2.5 hour drive to the beach every weekend in addition to spending weekdays with her. My sisters, who lived much closer to their beach house, just avoided the situation. Keep an eye on your elderly parents.

    People are forgetting an important detail. MANY parents resent and resist kids getting bossy and trying to take over their lives checking on them like they were children. Even well meaning children. Unfortunately, having been in healthcare for 50 years there are more malevolent interest from kids or excessive control attempts from kids than kids being available to help and respecting by keeping a respectful distance and NOT try to take over like a dictator. That is rare. MANY adults and elderly fear that letting them get too nosey is opening the door for coup attempts and may not always answer the phone, or welcome concern. Sometimes it's BEST for the elderly to distance themselves, and sometimes not. WE don't know their concerns. Whether reasonable or not, or even present. Dr Laura's mother was dead months before she was found, and Weird Al's parents died of carbon monoxide poisoning. Unless invited, kids need to not impose themselves on their parents and if something goes wrong its not their fault. Parents are not minors. What are your adult children doing this moment? How about your parents? Are they alive right this minute? You really don't know unless they CHOOSE to have you with them..

      I'm an elder, and doing just fine....thanks for your concern. But without the undocumented in my area, no farms would get their fruit or produce picked, no one would be out working in the roads, or on our roofs. The medical care they get here is for pregnancy or emergency care only, and many pay taxes usjng an ITIN number.

    I quit my job to take care of my Mom when she was ill because it was either that or put her in a home and there was no way I was doing that. Parents take care of us when we're young, that's the least we can do for them. Why didn't the family take care of them? This is so horrific that they both died over something that could have been prevented. Sad.

    My step dad got cancer during Covid and he and my mom hid it from everyone. It wasn't until he was on death's door that I realized that something was going on. I worked in "essential" retail during covid, so visits were restricted to phone calls on opposite sides of the patio door. I'm sure that if this daughter knew how bad it was, she would have done something. Even elderly people who are suffering from alzheimer's can conceal their symptoms pretty effectively. My mom now has dementia, and although she has progressed quite a bit in the last year, she was really good at hiding symptoms by claiming to be feeling ill when her mind was giving her trouble. These days, she can't remember that she has a diagnosis.

  • @annwe6
    @annwe6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    To all the people commenting with their told-you-so internet "wisdom." You are completely over simplifying a tragic situation for the perverse, momentary satisfaction of telling a grieving woman she let her parents down. You know nothing of her life, her back story (apparently she'd just had a surgery), or her relationship with her parents, etc. Many people simply cannot afford to take care of elderly relatives. Or give up homes, lives and livelihoods to move across country to be with them. Life doesn't always work out that way. Victim blamers are mentally sick. Try a little compassion for a change - you might find you feel a bit better about your own sad life too.

    A lot of blame here and that’s not good. I place the responsibility for keeping people safe, on our government. We pay taxes federal and state, and the US government should make sure that there are cooling centers in the summer and warming centers in the winter in EVERY town for ANYONE who needs it. They should provide rides to and from especially for the elderly and vulnerable. But no, they send our tax money to do stuff that we don’t approve of.

    It is pretty obvious excessive electrical costs is killing people. People are avoiding using AC and heat in winter. It gets to 117 here where I live. Dry heat fortunately. Almost no elderly or poor use their AC or heater, even swamp coolers. Costs too much. That extra $50-$1000 over a moderate bill is too much for fixed incomes.

    Doctors and caregivers should be working with social workers to ensure there is a reliable back-up power source during power outages, both planned and emergency shutoff. A small emergency lithium battery costs around $1,000, and can power an air conditioner, fans, breathing machine, etc. Solar panels can be used to recharge, and in turn charge up phones, lights.

    I don't understand, why did they not have electricity in their house? Was it because they couldn't afford it financially? The daughter (and if she has any other siblings) should have been checking on them regularly! (by phone, if she lived faraway), and sending them some money if her parents were that much in need that they couldn't afford their electricity bill.
