@danw4711 Fewer European countries are eligible to play in the olympics, and it tends to be the same ones that qualify. Therefore most other countries have little to no interest in it as a tournament. Particularly as the mens is mainly an under 23 tournament. It's not shown on TV here in the same way that other tournaments are. So yeah, Europeans don't value it as much but it doesn't make the competition any less? The attendance at the games (mainly the women's) speaks for itself.

But some of those opinions do qualify as snobbery, maybe I’m misreading Rue’s reason for slagging off the Olympic tournament, but it is disrespectful to to diminish a world championship that is just as difficult to achieve (though maybe in different ways) as the World Cup, imo.
The Olympics is too weird as a football tournament - odd number of teams, ridiculous schedule and squad size limitations. As the Champions League increases their number of games and a Europa League is added Fifa might rethink its official Fifa window designation for the Olympics because of the schedule congestion. It will probably become optional for clubs to release their players just like the men's Olympics football.
