  • This my Red Wing 1/3rd scale model hit and miss engine.
I have just recently fished building it from a basic unmachined casting kit produced by PM Research in the US and supplied to me by Forest Classics here in the UK. All the other necessary components and fittings were made by me from bar stock.
It's just about run in now and I have it running here on Colman's camping fuel with 10% WD40 added to lubricate the bore but also runs well on petrol with a small amount of 2 stroke oil added.
The ignition is via a Rcexl CDi unit with hall effect sensor from 'Just Engines' in the UK.
Power to the ignition is supplied by 2x 18650 3.7v Lithium batteries wired in series (8.4v) and are in the wooded control box.
As you can see in the box there is also a rev counter, the Rcexl cdi unit comes with a lead attached specifically for this purpose so it seemed a shame not you use it! . . . It's x10 by the way so about 260 rpm.

Outstanding workmanship. One must appreciate the blend of old tech and new, the CDI stuff mixed into it as if it's always belonged.

This engine spins freely! Maybe it is very efficient. Just make these springs on flywheel hard and it will go very fast.

When it attempts to fire but fails one or more times before it finally fires, what is going on there? Is that a mixture issue once it starts to warm up? I've heard that on a few engine videos, but I haven't heard a good explanation for it.
Congratulations on very low friction, by the way. You mentioned in another comment an interest in building a twin. I've never seen a twin cylinder hit and miss, and am enthusiastically interested in such a project!
I have a smaller version on the way and can hardly wait to dig into it.

      it's a *hit & miss* engine

Buck Starchaser , I have found that normally when it’s double firing like that it is because it is to lean, need to open the mixture screw a tad bit. The only twin cylinder Hit and Miss engine that I have ever seen was scratch built by Jim Limacher, and is on the cover of the Oct/Nov 2013 issue of Gas Engine Magazine, and it is a beauty !

A beautiful.engine indeed- but for the purchase price, you would be better off with a genuine vintage one.. with prices that are steadily increasing.

You're missing the point. Building a scale model engine is not intended as a substitute for owning a full-scale engine. Rather, it is to have the experience of building a scale model engine.
