  • Follow us to Kungsådran, a little technical part of Swedish Dalälven. Here Mikael started his fishing more than 40 years ago, worked at the scientific station and learned a lot about wild fish rivers and their superiority to hatcheries. Enjoy a few takes on film, great sea trout up to 20+ lbs and some tricks on how to fish a small pretty fast river like this.
    Dalälven and Kungsådran is now in the plan to be a wild salmon and sea trout river again. The fish path is planned the spawning grounds increasing, there’s hope that one day there will be no hatched fish at all. Join us in the fight for our wild fish-fight to make great rivers like this be an important part of a healthy ecosystem again!

      @@frodinflies WOW! Cool...did you fish Mountain of Cascade Lakes for Trout? Or try to find a salmon Ling or Rockfish ? I know the fishing at both are usually successful. I used to fish both lakes but of late..none of my bait was working. The Chief of LACoFD is a good friend who loves to fish both salt-fresh. He came here to visit in Aug (after years of my building up what great fishing we had) and we could not get a single bite in either lake, or even out on the sea during a Humpie salmon season.
      Open to fishing year-round. Fishing for kokanee is good from late-May to early-June and in the fall. Other opportunities include cutthroat trout, eastern brook trout, and jumbo triploid rainbow trout that are stocked in the spring

    Why is there a hatchery here? Can fish pass the dam and is there spawning habitat?

    • @frodinflies
      @frodinflies  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      No there is no passing above the dam yet - but thats what we fight for! We need the wild fish to spawn!

      I have fished the Dalalven a few times. The Kungsadren is a short stretch of the river directly below the dam, which runs nearly dry for most of the year. In late Sept/Oct, Im not sure when, the operators of the fishery open a gate and allow this area to run as it would have done in the past. All the fish trapped below this area, both Salmon and Sea trout, run up into it, that is the ones who have survived the hot summer, as they try to ascend to suitable spawning grounds. They never are able to progress further as the dam has no pass. The fish are trapped here, although I do believe that there is some spawning here. Many fish die of heat stress in hot summers, trapped in the area directly below this stretch, the survivors ascend into this small area, in the autumnal fishery. In the past the fish would ascend 100/200 miles up this river but can no longer do so due to hydro power. This is the case with most Swedish rivers. 99.9% of the Salmon are hatchery fish, there would be no Salmon in the river without the hatchery. Sweden was a heaven for the Salmon before man, destroyed nearly every river in Sweden. I fished the river in 2023 and realised finally that it was an immoral thing, as the fish are so stressed by being blocked from any possibility of ascending the river to their historic grounds.

    When did you start using the double handed rod,or have you always used one?

    • @frodinflies
      @frodinflies  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Steve - started back in the mid 70s... but before that only single handed.

    Spinning fishing is easier and more efficient. Is it probably very wise to release fish caught in the river in order to buy it later in the store? 😁

    Nice fish sir, well played. I always try to keep my salmon under the surface when fighting. They seem to throw hooks on those head shakes.
    Do they get tired faster when you bring them to the surface?

    • @frodinflies
      @frodinflies  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      normally when lifting the head they get calm and easy to land i think... small fish is easy to get in fast before they get exhausted - important for the release!
