I’ve recently heard about some promising advances out of the Fred Hutch Institute in Seattle. Is there any truth behind the hype? Could you make a short video on it? I know the attitude of most health professionals is “hey, it’s just herpes” but those of us living with it, especially the ones who seem to not be the lucky few who don’t get but one a year, it’s hell. I pray for a cure the same way others pray to win the lottery. It kills you in the worst way. It leaves you alive but without being able to really live. We could use some good news. Thank you for all your dedication and hard work.
There's a couple of vaccines currently out for trial, so hopefully something will work soon. Please note, there has been about 15 vaccines over the last 40 years that have all failed, so it's a difficult subject to find a solution to. One of the vaccines is from this institute, but no answers yet
My doctor tested me without knowing through an igg blood test and it came back positive for hsv2, 6 months later and I still never had an outbreak. My doctor just diagnosed me without confirmation and prescribed me meds, idk what to do. This caused anxiety and stress on a regular basis
Hi there, what medication did he give you, aciclovir? Is it because he gets paid more? You don't need aciclovir if you don't have outbreaks. Let me know if it's a different medication you are taking.
@@DrBretPalmer I was prescribed aciclovir after I called their office to report my anxiety and depression due to the diagnosis. Probably so i didnt know doctors get could paid to prescribe meds thats interesting. what could i do about this situation? I have been in a rut for months about this diagnosis and i was never given a pcr swab or inspection for confirmation of this diagnosis
Just to say, does depend on your country if you doctor got paid for giving medication. Now let's look at why a diagnosis of herpes is getting to you so much. If it was a diagnosis of coldsores would you be so upset? They are the virtually the same virus.
@@DrBretPalmer if it was cold sores I’d probably have forgotten about the diagnosis by now and continue living life like normal. I wouldn’t have been upset at it, I’d just be surprised at the least.I think due to society’s stigma of the word herpes it made me feel like I can’t live life anymore without feeling like a biohazard to other humans, I also didn’t know it was common prior to the blood test

I have seen a qualified doctor for my herpes. Some rate spots come out on my body and after two days it gets cleaned automatically what is the sympto. I told the doctor about redspot but the doctor said it was for mosquito bites. But I am curious that the red spots merge automatically within two days.hey Dc say is there any relation with herpes with constipation?? Does herpes make stool hard? Although I drink 6 to 7 glasses of water a day and eat lots of vegetables. Please reply 🙏 Dc
Hi there, Nope, there's no relation to hard stools and herpes, eat more fruit and fibre, like crushed linseed, add linseed to breakfast or salad, this will help as well. Herpes tend to cause painful ulcers, it's good you don't have them. I hope this helps.
Sir, i have a question, can u plzz tell me, if my blood test is positive for HSV1, and if have done vaginal swab test without having any sore, so can my vaginal swab show positive for hsv1, without having any sore.... Plzz tell me sir, i m so confused..
A blood test is picking up your immune response. A swab test is trying to detect the virus directly. Your immune system may stop the virus from coming out, this is common for most people. Doing a random swab test is likely to be negative. Some people do shed the virus when they have so symptoms and this is the most common way of contracting HSV. I hope this is useful. Take care.

Hi are you contagious all the time even though you haven’t had an out break in a while? Will the outbreaks ever get to the point where you don’t have them anymore I’m on my 3rd now got diagnosed at Christmas the first was the worse the other two didn’t seem half as bad and didn’t stick about as long either
While HSV is a life long infection your symptoms, hopefully will fade. It is possible to pass it on with no symptoms, your partner may already have it. You can tell a partner that you have coldsore and then let them come up with any follow-up questions.
Yeap, I get a lot of these. I try to delete about 20 a day. I miss a few unfortunately. No cure. If any new treatments then I'll report on this channel. Take care.

I actually caught it from my girlfriend early on into our relationship it caused a lot of confusion and upset because I didn’t really understand the condition at first then came to your channel and spoke to the nurses at the clinic and they put my mind at ease I still have my down days where I feel upset about it but there’s worser things to have. I must admit it did cause a wedge between me and my girlfriend and resentment and blame but it wasn’t passed on intentionally she’d just found out only because she had a smear test and questioned something. Hopfully over time with diet and healthy eating it should sort itself out

While the same virus it's a little different, like a red or yellow car, same but different. HSV2 has a slightly better method of getting around the immune system than HSV1, so outbreaks more. HSV 2 generally prefers the genitals, so it feels like genital herpes outbreaks more, which it does but not because it's genital herpes it's because it's HSV2.

HSV1 around the mouth is called coldsore and is usually caught before you are sexually active and usually caught from a family member, through cuddling or a simple kiss. The result just confirms you are human and you have a natural human infection, that's all. Don't do the test again, it won't bring any benefit to you.
Dear Dr. Palmer. Question. I took the PCR 12 pathogen urine for infectious diseases which included HSV 1 & HSV 2. All 12 came up negative in 2023 & 2024. I took the blood test was positive for HSV 1 and HSV 2 Igg in 2023. Igm was negative for both. I’m confused. Thank you
I don't advise a urine test for HSV, will only detect HSV if currently in the urine tract. Blood picks up infection any time of your life. Chances are HSV1, coldsore virus, probably picked it up as a child and your immune system is controlling it.
Hi dr I got test last Friday for hsv2 could my blood test be wrong. If I have other infections going on like bv and yeast ? I also I was wondering that I was spotting for two days everytime I wipe there was a little blood then after those two days I woke up and it was blood in my underwear and I was bleeding but I wasn’t on my period I was wondering does herpes cause bleeding ? Okay thrush or BV can cause spotting. Use a pessary and appropriate treatment given by your doctor or pharmacist or as suggested in my videos. This is why I advise people to not do these tests, because very unhelpful. Likely to be positive, but please remember very very common infection. Yes it could be a false positive and feel free to get a retest. If retest is negative, never do a blood test again for this infection, only do swab test for a sore (which you don't have). I hope this is useful.
Hii, i m suffering from the same situation, i don't know what is this, mine doctor did the same thing, she told me to do a blood test for HIV syphilis and hsv1igg hsv1igm hsv2igg and hsv 2igm , all test are negative expect my HSV1 igg (5.4) And on that day i was so panicked stressed and i thought my life is over, becoz i heard that hsv is incurable, i was continusly getting depression and anxiety attack for 1 3weeks , my health was getting worse after that day, just Becoz of my mental health, i was not eating properly, doing nothing, and my body is also started Reacting after some days, i had lot of white discharge, and itching, headache, burning, so many unusal symptoms started after that,......... I m still figuring out it's becoz of hsv or becoz of my mental stress, becoz i had also urine infection and yellow discharge previously, when i don't know my hsv 1 is positive.......... If u find some solution plzz let me know, it will so helpful for me 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
@AnamikaMittal-ks3xo Hi there, sorry you are having a rough time. HSV is a bit like chicken pox, no one cares if you've had that infection. Try not to make it a big problem. HSV is very very common. If your basic sexual health screen is negative and your urinary symptoms come and go, then likely to be mental health, infections, especially if bacterial tend to get worse and don't come and go. If symptoms unbearable you can consider a 1 week trial of aciclovir, if you think it's due to HSV? Best dicuss this with your doctor or a sexual health doctor.
Hi Doctor... Me and my friend are medical students. i) Once, a blood sample was taken from an HIV infected person [3 hours later] and the blood sample was poured into my friend's big cut due to his ignorance. So is there a chance of HIV infection through this? ii) He had fever continuously for 6 days. The tests revealed that he has typhoid. What should he do now (the period for taking PEP is also over).
For HIV, there's nothing he can do, he just has to wait it out and retest in 6 weeks. If he has Typhoid then needs to get treatment for that. I wish him well.

@DrBretPalmer Is it possible to get HSV1 from touching, say, a handle of a hand bag or purse from someone who clearly had cold sores and touched the same handle after touching their cold sore? If you touched your genitals with the same hand that handled the bag approximately 5 minutes after, could you spread HSV1 to genital area.
HSV1 usually isn't dangerous but can cause pain. If you think the pain is associated with HSV, then take aciclovir first as treatment, then as a suppression dose to see if this has a positive effect. Take care

@AnamikaMittal-ks3xo take a full sexual health screen, if sexually active, to rule out Chlamydia, gonorrhoea, syphilis and HIV. Also if your doctor also considers it to be due to HSV, then a trial of aciclovir 400mg three times a day for 5-10 days to see if the pains go away. If due to HSV, they should ease up. If not, then could be another cause.

Hi there, a urine test for HSV 1 or 2 is different and not done in the UK. What I would do is take a sample from the vagina and look under a microscope, it sounds as though you don't have a sexual health service in your area. I wouldn't be concerned with HSV, patients focus on it but doctors rarely do unless you have meningitis or visable sores. Can you get to a sexual health clinic?

This is a difficult one. I wouldn't recheck. I'd wait for an outbreak. Have you had many previous partners or do any family members have facial cold sores? Blood tests don't tell you where the infection is. Your current partner may already have the infection.
Hi Dr PaImer, i have a question. Actually, a couple days ago, just out of curiosity, I ordered a self-test STI kit to do it at home since I’m getting married soon. So it includes everything, including a test for HSV 1 and 2. It was shocking to me that my test for HSV 2 came back positive. For HSV1, I kind of expected that because I had an outbreak when I was 14. On top of that, I have never had sex for almost a year now, and luckily, I never had an outbreak of HSV2. So, what should I do now? I just have really bad anxiety. It is disrupting my social life right now.
Congrats on getting married. Have you both had sex yet? Also you are assuming HSV2 isn't on your mouth. Can have both in one place. You are not bothered by the coldsore on the mouth so why sooo concerned about the coldsore on the genitals (which has not ever come out). I get the paranoia but these are some of the questions you are probably not going to know the answer to. Have you discussed with future wife? Has she every had coldsores or family history of coldsores?
Alright doc, odd one but im curios. if you manage to get HSV1 in the genitals would that block HSV2 . In so much that it would even be preferable to have HSV1 on your genitals as it isn’t as aggressive and will act as a block for HSV2. Or can you just have both in your genitals and round your mouth? I have also heard that you can’t have the same virus in two parts as your immunity will likely stop it, for example HSV1 around mouth and Genitals?
If you have HSV1, then this will reduce the amount of HSV2 outbreaks you have. You have have both viruses at the same place and I've treated many people with genital HSV1 & 2. The usual is HSV1 around the mouth and HSV2 around the genitals but you can have both in the same place.

Doctor, I have hsv1 in my genital areas, do you think I need to disclose this to all my partners? I don't see many people with cold sores disclosing that they have herpes, and that was the reason I got genital herpes, through oral sex, anyway, do you think it's necessary to disclose it to my partners?
As a general rule no, as you said, people don't disclose if they have coldsores and most people don't know they have the coldsore virus. Some people will say to regular partners that they have coldsores and then wait for follow up questions.

@Dabrat888 you are 100% correct. It's the same infection but if on the genitals it's herpes. Even if you have HSV2 on the mouth, that would be called coldsores. Probably more of a reflection of the poor attitude cultures have towards sex and genitals.

Yes. As well as other human herpes viruses. Herpes viruses are for life but are normal. Also lots of research do show evidence of protection against other infections.

@ash9x9 in English, yes, as oral herpes is called coldsores and people think they are two different things. Also most religions shame the genital area.

This is one question I never found the answer for….why does HSV2 in the genitals flare up more than HSV1 orally?
While the same virus it's a little different, like a red or yellow car, same but different.
HSV2 has a slightly better method of getting around the immune system than HSV1, so outbreaks more. HSV 2 generally prefers the genitals, so it feels like genital herpes outbreaks more, which it does but not because it's genital herpes it's because it's HSV2.

Hi doctor. Last tests : CD 4 - 1441, CD8 - 2318, total linfocits 5005, ratio CD4/CD8 : 0,67 , i m indetectable , under treatment for 3 years, start with 1540copies, without ART. Why my ratio CD4/ Cd8 never become more than 1, the best for my health? Thank you.

Keep an eye on it and you doctor may remeasure depending on your symptoms.

Hi doctor. Recently i got HSV 1 gG positive. But I don't have symptoms. Long back around 8 years ago, some kind ulcers in my mouth. Is that reason i got positive?. I didn't participated in sex ever before.
HSV1 around the mouth is called coldsore and is usually caught before you are sexually active and usually caught from a family member, through cuddling or a simple kiss. The result just confirms you are human and you have a natural human infection, that's all.
Don't do the test again, it won't bring any benefit to you.
Dear Dr. Palmer. Question. I took the PCR 12 pathogen urine for infectious diseases which included HSV 1 & HSV 2. All 12 came up negative in 2023 & 2024. I took the blood test was positive for HSV 1 and HSV 2 Igg in 2023. Igm was negative for both. I’m confused. Thank you
I don't advise a urine test for HSV, will only detect HSV if currently in the urine tract. Blood picks up infection any time of your life. Chances are HSV1, coldsore virus, probably picked it up as a child and your immune system is controlling it.

Hi dr I got test last Friday for hsv2 could my blood test be wrong. If I have other infections going on like bv and yeast ? I also I was wondering that I was spotting for two days everytime I wipe there was a little blood then after those two days I woke up and it was blood in my underwear and I was bleeding but I wasn’t on my period I was wondering does herpes cause bleeding ? I didn’t have any sore of anything I’m freaking out because may 5th I did a std check and blood test for herpes and I was negative now fast forward to last Friday I’m positive. Could the test be wrong ? Should I get retested ? Please help
Please help
Okay thrush or BV can cause spotting. Use a pessary and appropriate treatment given by your doctor or pharmacist or as suggested in my videos.
This is why I advise people to not do these tests, because very unhelpful.
Likely to be positive, but please remember very very common infection. Yes it could be a false positive and feel free to get a retest.
If retest is negative, never do a blood test again for this infection, only do swab test for a sore (which you don't have).

Hii, i m suffering from the same situation, i don't know what is this, mine doctor did the same thing, she told me to do a blood test for HIV syphilis and hsv1igg hsv1igm hsv2igg and hsv 2igm , all test are negative expect my HSV1 igg (5.4)
And on that day i was so panicked stressed and i thought my life is over, becoz i heard that hsv is incurable, i was continusly getting depression and anxiety attack for 1 3weeks , my health was getting worse after that day, just Becoz of my mental health, i was not eating properly, doing nothing, and my body is also started Reacting after some days, i had lot of white discharge, and itching, headache, burning, so many unusal symptoms started after that,......... I m still figuring out it's becoz of hsv or becoz of my mental stress, becoz i had also urine infection and yellow discharge previously, when i don't know my hsv 1 is positive..........

Hi there, sorry you are having a rough time. HSV is a bit like chicken pox, no one cares if you've had that infection. Try not to make it a big problem. HSV is very very common.
If your basic sexual health screen is negative and your urinary symptoms come and go, then likely to be mental health, infections, especially if bacterial tend to get worse and don't come and go.
If symptoms unbearable you can consider a 1 week trial of aciclovir, if you think it's due to HSV?
Best dicuss this with your doctor or a sexual health doctor.

IgG is the long term antibody.
IgM is the short term antibody.
90% of humans at the age of 50 have IgG to HSV.

Hi Doctor... Me and my friend are medical students.
i) Once, a blood sample was taken from an HIV infected person [3 hours later] and the blood sample was poured into my friend's big cut due to his ignorance. So is there a chance of HIV infection through this?
ii) He had fever continuously for 6 days. The tests revealed that he has typhoid. What should he do now (the period for taking PEP is also over).
For HIV, there's nothing he can do, he just has to wait it out and retest in 6 weeks.
If he has Typhoid then needs to get treatment for that.

@DrBretPalmer Is it possible to get HSV1 from touching, say, a handle of a hand bag or purse from someone who clearly had cold sores and touched the same handle after touching their cold sore? If you touched your genitals with the same hand that handled the bag approximately 5 minutes after, could you spread HSV1 to genital area.

HSV1 usually isn't dangerous but can cause pain. If you think the pain is associated with HSV, then take aciclovir first as treatment, then as a suppression dose to see if this has a positive effect.

@AnamikaMittal-ks3xo take a full sexual health screen, if sexually active, to rule out Chlamydia, gonorrhoea, syphilis and HIV.
Also if your doctor also considers it to be due to HSV, then a trial of aciclovir 400mg three times a day for 5-10 days to see if the pains go away. If due to HSV, they should ease up. If not, then could be another cause.

Sir as u said , i get tested for gonorrhea urine test(NAAT) and chalmidia igg , igm blood test, results came negative for that....

Hi there, a urine test for HSV 1 or 2 is different and not done in the UK. What I would do is take a sample from the vagina and look under a microscope, it sounds as though you don't have a sexual health service in your area.
I wouldn't be concerned with HSV, patients focus on it but doctors rarely do unless you have meningitis or visable sores.

Blood tests don't tell you where the infection is.
Your current partner may already have the infection.

Hi Dr PaImer, i have a question. Actually, a couple days ago, just out of curiosity, I ordered a self-test STI kit to do it at home since I’m getting married soon. So it includes everything, including a test for HSV 1 and 2. It was shocking to me that my test for HSV 2 came back positive. For HSV1, I kind of expected that because I had an outbreak when I was 14. On top of that, I have never had sex for almost a year now, and luckily, I never had an outbreak of HSV2. So, what should I do now? I just have really bad anxiety. It is disrupting my social life right now.

You are not bothered by the coldsore on the mouth so why sooo concerned about the coldsore on the genitals (which has not ever come out).

Alright doc, odd one but im curios. if you manage to get HSV1 in the genitals would that block HSV2 . In so much that it would even be preferable to have HSV1 on your genitals as it isn’t as aggressive and will act as a block for HSV2. Or can you just have both in your genitals and round your mouth?
I have also heard that you can’t have the same virus in two parts as your immunity will likely stop it, for example HSV1 around mouth and Genitals?
If you have HSV1, then this will reduce the amount of HSV2 outbreaks you have. You have have both viruses at the same place and I've treated many people with genital HSV1 & 2. The usual is HSV1 around the mouth and HSV2 around the genitals but you can have both in the same place.

Yes. And I have HSV1. probably caught as a child as my Mother and brother had coldsores. Blood tests don't tell you where or when.

@Livingmydream-uc5gq you caught it as a baby from parents or a loving Auntie. Just a kiss, that's all it takes. Your immune system is strong enough to control it, you can't catch HSV1 Twice.

As a general rule no, as you said, people don't disclose if they have coldsores and most people don't know they have the coldsore virus.
Some people will say to regular partners that they have coldsores and then wait for follow up questions.

Even if you have HSV2 on the mouth, that would be called coldsores.
Probably more of a reflection of the poor attitude cultures have towards sex and genitals.

Yes.
As well as other human herpes viruses.
Herpes viruses are for life but are normal.
Also lots of research do show evidence of protection against other infections.
