How Does Chainsaw Milled Aspen Work for Roofing? #47

  • As always, I milled up my own lumber with a chainsaw, this time for the gazebo I'm building. Wood isn't cheap these days, but here in the wilderness it's almost free!
As a last effort to find something worth building with the blow-down, Quaking Aspen I decided to give it a try for roofing. It is heavy when wet and splits, cracks and warps when it dries but will it hold up once nailed in place?
I've no idea. Time will tell.
If you are interested in seeing the whole Gazebo project, here is a link to the playlist:

Because I’ve gotten so many questions about the gear that I use on the channel, here are some of the most important pieces I use every day:

    Granberg Chainsaw Mill amzn.to/3cdRXvn

Thank you all so much for supporting this crazy endeavor! Without you folks donating to Surviving Ringworm, I wouldn't be able to even consider staying out here in the wilderness a second year making videos. You seriously blow my mind!

That was pretty cool that mother nature took down the trees that you were thinking about taking down yourself. She's in the forest and listening. Your progress is great. Can't wait to see you kicking back and enjoying no bugs.

If that water flows all year you could easily make a pool/pond to cool off in. If you use one of those little pond liners for land scape it would stay cleaner (you would stir up the mud) and give you an even better water source.

This is Scott I live a little bit north of Montreal I do live out in the woods Lakefront beautiful place I've been here for over 20 years I do live alone and it does make me nervous when I see you with a chainsaw on a ladder been-there-done-that I did have an incident one time with a chainsaw got my leg scared the piss out of me but actually it only cut through my jeans and never touch me I've had a couple other incident for example bring in firewood in in the winter time and falling on the ice with the whole arm full of firewood I had some slight injuries but being up north by yourself in the woods I'm definitely aware that I am by myself and at best hospitals over an hour away

    Another woodworking episode.
But you save time. Why don't you turn the logs and square all 4 sides?
Then don't need to do trimming of each board afterwards.
And cut a 1x1 or 2x2 (you've got enough wood, for sure) then mount to the floor as bottom to hold screen

borax? can someone explain this to me? How many coats? Mix rate?
I use aspen in MI to build too. This tree is prone to blow over and is soft wood for the bugs to penetrate to the core. The Japanese developed a technique to compensate for the severe, soft wood checking. They selected a side of a timber and cut a grove down the center to create the "check" and positioned to timber for best results. Checkout Mr. Chickadee channel for a view of the process.
