Eric, you are by far the best teacher on TH-cam with your in-depth explanations and attention to detail. No one else I've seen provides the quantity and quality of information that you do. Thank you for your hard work and dedication and for the positive impact you've had on my game!
This is great! Totally helped me improve my low point impact. Making much better contact. I think we tend to focus too much with the hands and arms in the swing. This was very helpful! Thanks Eric!
Your combination of professionalism, scientific knowledge AND the funny and lovable tough love segments like from 12:54 to 13:30 is absolutely great. Please always keep this funny edge and these little tough love segments.
Mr. Cogorno! Yet another outstanding video. I've been checking out some footage of my swing and have noticed an almost complete 'stall' pre-impact resulting in - you guessed it - loss of shaft lean, early extension and flip. Today I played and brought out your ideas onto the golf course. The 'shirt button' image really works and I now have a more complete understanding of how rotation works not only in the backswing, but more importantly, its continuation throughout the transition and into follow-through... Thanks! William
Wonderful explanation sure is a lot different than the crap we were shown 25 years ago where just turning the hips would turn the shoulders which would then pull the hands and club through. I even been a decent athlete playing hockey and football but have never been able to shoot under 100 in golf. And finally I know why holding the shoulders and arms back expecting the hips and stomach muscles to do everything was a pile of crap. Uggh. tks again for sharing your amazing understanding of how we should work the whole body and not just the hips
You got it, George! Hope it serves you well. you are free to open everything as much as you want SO LONG AS you got enough turn and depth in your backswing... AND.....your club face is square to closed/path from inside. So there are come caveats :)
This is the best explanation in a video I have ever seen bar none! I have wanted this explained to me as perfectly as you did ever since I started playing golf 25 years ago! I’ve always had a fear that I would not hit the ball if my chest was open 30 degrees at contact. I have been told that I have a beautiful swing so many times but, if they don’t know the fear I go through just that one millisecond before ball contact! It’s been like a big huge chain has been around my neck forever in trying to make that perfect ball contact. Some instructors talk about lag in your swing and I have felt so uncomfortable trying to create the right amount of lag. If I understand your instruction right , you said the club should be shallowed out, hips square, and chest turned 30 degrees at ball contact. It doesn’t take but a millisecond for everything to go to shit as you so aptly described the swing process. I will practice this and practice it some more! Thank you for this video! When it comes to irons, I have struggled with my 4,5, and 6 iron so much. It’s like the more the angle of the iron stands up I get nauseated when it comes time for shots that are 160 to 200 yards from the green.
I have been following Mark Crossfield for a long time, and allthough i think he is really good delivering instructions, i feel that it is time he passed on his old nickname "the golf guru" to you Eric.. you are simply THE best on youtube right now.
man this video has helped me sooo much. For years i could not figure out why i could not close the club face to my path and i have tried everything. now i know my chest lags behind and causes face to stay open and also caused me to early extend. Would you say its a safe "rule" to have that the hips start the DS to last parallel then allow chest rotation to take over through impact?
Glad to hear that! "Would you say its a safe "rule" to have that the hips start the DS to last parallel then allow chest rotation to take over through impact?" -I would say thats OK to think of it that way, yep.
I appreciate the information. The video states that if your only 70 degrees of turn back the whole swing putter goes to ***** :) love the comment. Obviously we are not all body type robots to go 90 - 45 - 45 to complete follow thru finish
Great video! I love having check points to refer to. This video combined with the stop rushing from the top video is exactly what my game needs to get to the next level.
Hi Eric, I believe this is one of your best videos. Thank you. Let say your club after impact is pointing to 4 a clock in downswing, will the head move forward or stay still more behind? Thank you.
Thanks! It should move SLIGHTLY down and forward to start down until hands about hip high then stays there until arms parallel in follow through. Then releases up th-cam.com/video/TMMCQz3nlmw/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/hbsHxC3bIw4/w-d-xo.html
Awesome...my 10 yr old is ~30 degrees closed at impact and I have not been able to get him to open his chest. I do believe this video gives me the tools to help him. You and George Gankas are the best on the net. Thanks.
I forgot to mention Rotary Swing golf as well. The 3 of you guys together have helped me finally brake 80. Shot a 78 last week after living at 89-92 for years. Thanks a bunch.
Hi Eric, one question please. So this is what I try and work but would like to know what your opinion is. When I use my chest for downswing initiation and also swing through, I think my pelvis turns anyway. When I use my just left hip for turn in downswing, I do not know if it activates the entire body rotation. What do you think? Thank you.
I’m going to try this at the Range this weekend but I am wondering if I’m leading with my chest rotation will I also revert back to early extending, which I have been trying to not do. I’ve been really working on adding more right side bend but still have inconsistent fat/thin shots.
Finding letting my head rotate much like your doing in this video and like Dustin does with his wedges is really helping my wedge game. It is a bit disconcerting not keeping my head down but can't seem to replicate the pure strike without rotating my head!? Guess I just practice enough that i get the feeling of that rotation through the ball. My problem with different swings for wedges is the grey area where you say it's a wedge swing or a "normal" swing?
Hey Stephen! Glad it helps! I would have to see your swing to say specifically "why" for you it would work...generally speaking rotating the eyes allows the neck and chest/ribcage to open more...which may fit your pattern. Wedges to normal swing usually happens for most when you go from 1/2-3/4 length...for me that's 60-75 yards
Hi Eric, been trying this but I suppose it's important to say that if your weight is on the back foot at impact, your sternum can be pointing Infront of the ball but actually situated behind the ball if you know what I mean. Great work as usual keep it up 👍
Eric, this is a good video. Do I have this right: the chest has no moveable joints and can’t move on it’s own, so by thinking to rotate the chest, other muscles and joints have to move the chest into a rotation. My point is this,: by thinking of rotating the chest, you don’t have to think about your feet , hips, knees, etc, they just respond to what you are trying to do. All you have to think about is rotating your chest.
I would agree with that! I also think you could say that for another body part.....like the shoulders....or pelvis.... ONE movement will effect other parts.....could also reverse engineer it.
Eric, is it fair to say that from the start of the swing until club release after impact the sternum should always be closer to the target than the hands?
Hi Eric, do you have a video that provides instructions on what the left (lead) hip, and left (lead) knee should be doing from P6 to impact? If yes, can you send me a TH-cam link?
Hey Jacob here is some info: th-cam.com/video/S_WXrdLqbs4/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/pZD-m5264Ys/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/wKNX_7tkN5o/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/wVzL-oEYFyA/w-d-xo.html
Eric, I hope it would accurate to say that in the first half of the downswing the shoulders stay passive while the hips move back to square. This causes the difference between shoulder and hip rotation to remain at 45*. In addition, this also causes the arms to drop down naturally into the slot.
@@CogornoGolf Thank you very much for taking the time to respond. I have watched each of these videos several times which have helped in making much better contact. I now love to hit my mid-irons.
Great video...at impact, isn't one's head suppose to be behind the ball...seems when I rotate my chest to face a few inches ahead of the ball, my head is also in front of the ball at impact...which for me creates fat shots...I guess my question is...at impact ( other than driver ) where should the head be?
Eric, Good job explaining the "why" behind your instruction. Can't wait to work with that. Question? Can I combine the shallowing swing path drill with the chest drill?
You have an attribute that all great coaches have. Precise clarification. You cut right through the ultra complicated theoretical BS and lay it right out there. Thanks.
I have too much of an arm swing and probably flip. Should I be thinking turn chest, don’t pull with your arms, after I shallow the club on the downswing?
How does chest rotation rotation relate to releasing lag at impact? Only the hips slow down while chest and hands continue the rotation or do the hands and chest rotation slow also at lag release?
Hold a club in front of you in your golf posture Have the club head sitting on the ground Turn your chest toward the target see how the the handle moves forward? Now turn your chest away from the target Keep the club on the ground the whole time See how that takes shaft lean away? Thats why.
Eric Cogorno Golf so lag release will happen automatically as the chest continues to turn at roughly the same speed between downswing and follow through?
Eric, Can this be incorporated with the reverse slice sequence training? I’m getting a small draw now but no distance. 9 - 7 all go about 125 yards. Thank you for your great instruction!

How does chest rotation rotation relate to releasing lag at impact? Only the hips slow down while chest and hands continue the rotation or do the hands and chest rotation slow also at lag release?
More chest rotation--->able to maintain "lag" better
Eric Cogorno Golf how does chest rotation affect lag release, if there is an effect at all?
Hold a club in front of you in your golf posture
Have the club head sitting on the ground
Turn your chest toward the target
see how the the handle moves forward?
Now turn your chest away from the target
Keep the club on the ground the whole time
See how that takes shaft lean away?
