Keeping the left hip tilted down in transition causes the lead knee to rotate toward the target and to separate from the trail knee, which is an observation many golf instructors make when analysing the swing greats, like Hogan. I've tried to duplicate that separation but never had any success with it. Thinking about keeping the left hip down makes *much* more sense, is far easier to do and results in great pelvis rotation and unforced knee separation. Pure genius! Thanks from a new subscriber.
In my opinion, THE BEST instructor on the Internet at the minute. I’m not exaggerating one bit when I tell you that I play better EVERY SINGLE TIME that I go out to the course when I’ve watched and practice the latest tip. Best TH-cam discovery I’ve made. Fabulous.
He is definitely the best instructor I have ever heard of, not even because of how well he is able to simply explain ideas which are actually extremely complex. What he does that sets him apart is how he is able to make the viewer feel like they are actually at the course getting a lesson in person, I will be watching a lesson and talking to the screen like he is going to hear me...lol.
These couple video that you talking about moving down and forward to the left side. It's one of the best advise. I have been working on this and you video help me understand. What I'm doing and give me good reinforcement. You are definitely one of the better teacher on TH-cam I see. I would definitely take a lesson from you. This move solve a lot of problem. Thank you for the video.
In agreement with the few comments I have read, your explanation of fundamental biomechanics of the swing are exceptional, most coaches i ever used were not able to identify these things, bravo sir
You, Clay Ballard, and Chris Ryan along with some golf channel Como and Foley lessons have opened me up to studying the technical side of the golf swing more. I got to a 2 handicap by just playing and being taught by my uncle and dad simple stuff as a kid like back to the target belt buckle to the target or left shoulder under the chin plus a couple hitting drills. I don't know if I'll improve by adding in some technical drills or not only time will tell.
Thanks for being with us Brandon! I would bet it will IF you find a good coach to work with to provide feedback along the journey! Doesnt have to be crazy but at least some guidance along the process. Someone who has worked with a lot of people at your level and has gotten people where you want to go!
Eric it just keeps getting better and better. That little down movement of the left shoulder/knee before turning is continuing to be a godsend. I did struggle with the level turning out of my left knee and instead settled on keeping my left shoulder low and turning it through the downswing. Works a treat. Went out last night and hit 50 balls with a six iron mostly into an area not much bigger than my bedroom. Amazing, I had been having to go on a safari to pick up balls! Thanks mate. (I'm an Aussie)

Crazy good. For years I have stalled my shoulder turn and now I know why. My early right lateral bend has thrown up a wall to slow my rotation. Kudos to EC.

That was exactly the "feel" I used once I played around with the thoughts GG had given on one of his videos addressing this. Shoulders level? Guilty as charged. This fixes so many things in my swing that I didn't even know were related. Great insight. Very happy to have discovered your channel @Eric Cogorno Golf
Yeah this is another outstanding video Eric! My primary feel for the drill with the alignment stick was my right knee working to the target right away. Secondary feel was that I was right on top of the golf ball, having to keep the left shoulder lower promoted that feel. Last feel when hitting some easy shots was a squatting sensation. I've been goofing around with ways to get more space through the hit and should have watched this and saved some time. Thanks for this.
Thanks for your teaching your simplified GG swing tips teaching as you both have similar teaching, I like feeling of body tilts towards ball on transition then go into right bend and chest facing up throw the follow throw

Happy to hear. The only reason for some ride side bend at address is the fact that your right hand is lower than left. There is no other point to it that I'm aware of. But you get rid of that right side bend and replace with left side bend during backswing...
Eric you are a genius. Your understanding of the swing is phenomenal. I am in my 60s and played for decades as as a scratch marker and then started to struggle, so much so that I haven't played a comp for 7 years. As we all know, nothing grinds away at a golfer as a lost golf swing. I went to teacher after teacher and they were all actively promoting a slide which was killing me. This lesson has been a godsend. Went out tonight and hit it strongly. Best part is turning back to the ball and my hands are right there! Work n progress but you've given me some enjoyment again. No nightmares tonight.
This explanation of rotation is an eye opener, thanks a lot. It works perfect for me to get weight shift and proper rotation through the ball. Which easy feel is necessary to get the adequate right lateral bend ? Look at the ball and keep the head behind the ball ? In the video Adam Scott moves to target and then his head goes back again. Do You actively push the head back ? Do You know a feeling or trick ?
Thanks... Lots of different feels... but i dont know about feeling lead side lower AND right side bend. Usually people whos lead side goes up too much too early who need to feel lead side lower ALREADY HAVE a bunch of right lateral bend. Head staying in circle, right side crunch, right shoulder down, etc, etc
Curious what your tip would be...when my left shoulder goes lower as you instruct here, I feel as though I'm swaying to the left and bringing in a reverse pivot (which I've always struggled with). This instruction is amazing and makes a ton of sense, just difficult for me to work through. Would love your advice. Also agreeing with every other person who have ever commented on your videos, by far the best out there. Thank you sir!
Thanks, Graham. Appreciate the kind words. The issue here is that I can't give you specific advice based just on your feels. I don't know if thats real or just what you're feeling. I would have to see your swing to know for sure. Do an online swing analysis with me at some point if you can't figure it out! Hope all is well!
Excellent explanation Eric. I’d be interested to know if golfers who wear glasses struggle with rotation more than those who don’t wear glasses. I find that I have to tilt my head down, ie chin down, more at address and can’t let my head move more naturally in the backswing in case I lose focus on the ball if the ball were to go outside of the rim of my glasses. Do you know what I mean? It’s a bit hard to explain.
Good question...something I haven't noticed or looked into, but maybe. Typically more chin down (eyeline more down) is EASIER for rotation pieces of neck/upper spine. But good question, not 100% sure...
Eric, just so I'm clear on this, you are talking about transition into the downswing? It appears your left hip and shoulder are only lower for a split second happening at the start of the downswing. By the time you get to club parallel to the ground your hips are level.
I have been studying this for awhile and i NEVER picked up on tilt=no rotation... Because it kinda actually LOOKED like it did.. But now it makes incredible sense.... Now i have to rewind... Not paying attention...lol
Eric, how do you get your tilts even at address for a wedge when your right hand is always lower on the club? Something must be done to lower your right hand on the grip.
Right hand grip on club should only provide minimal amount of tilt in and of itself. Less right side bend with wedge than longer clubs. Club length also plays a role in setup
Yes, he exaggerates.. Yes it does...you have to add right side bend after to keep the head centered.... obviously these things are happening without you thinking 1 then 2 etc
I'm a big early right shoulder dropper, then I will spin my hips. With no rotation and a strong grip you have a left to left death shot. Hard habit to break. Gonna try everything mentioned. Thanks.
You def need feedback usually one of the 3 1. Video 2. mirror 3. Feedback station (drill) I'm just saying sometimes you need to hit some balls and experiment with feels, don't always need a "drill" to get a movement correct.
Eric Cogorno Golf I watched the rest of the video and get what you mean. I agree that you have to video. If you’re not using video you’re not making changes in my opinion.
Try exaggerating 10x more than you think. If that doesn't do it... figure out what else is going on that is CAUSING you to have right shoulder too down and start attacking that
How does one blend these feels with the upper body feels for more rotation? Feeling that left shoulder hitting something behind seems very different from feeling the left shoulder getting lower.
I might have missed it but do the left hip or shoulder get higher than the right at or past impact? I find my best driver swing is when I feel I take it back very low (keeping my left shoulder low) and then rotate hard with the left shoulder up and back.
Those sounds like good feels for the left shoulder movement... Left hip and left shoulder are higher than the right during the late phases of the downswing, def by impact
I’ve been trying to incorporate these same angles but I have to fight a tendency to come over the top in the downswing. Any thoughts how to deal with this while keeping left side lower?
Compare shoulder tilt with a wedge vs. a driver. Does tilt get naturally flatter with a longer club or should it remain about the same? Something I have been working on lately as I have felt I have been too flat with all my clubs, particularly 5 iron and longer.
Still the same ideas...Driver with the ball on a tee and angle of attack more up you can do it different ways. With more tilt at address....your left should should still be lower than your right by top of backswing
If you increase the bend in the left leg the left side of pelvis should go down If you straighten the left leg the pelvis should go up If you increase bend in transition first it should go down and then as you straighten it later in downswing it should go up
At impact (7m 59s) your left shoulder is higher than your right and your hips are about square but you seem to be saying something different like your left hip/shoulder need to be lower?
Hey Tim! Left shoulder should be lower at the top of backswing Left shoulder still lower in transition to about left arm parallel You want to shoot for shoulders being same level as address at P6 (last parallel) as a stock LEft shoulder will go UP from last parallel through impact Hopefully I demonstrated OK
Awesome Eric. Can you please explain something...why not set up with the left shoulder and left hip (a bit lower) so it already pre-sets the backswing tilts? What is the advantage of having the right shoulder lower at address? Would seem more efficient to preset the tilts a touch...am I being crazy?
You could but... 1. Because you grip the club with your right hand lower on the grip, that pre sets the tilts IF you were to add left side bend at address you would have to match a bunch of other variables... Make sure your right hip doesnt kick out to the right Keep your head from moving too much toward target with it (can be hard to rotate from) Change your right arm bend Increases odd of shoulders being aimed left Change the angle of the club lower etc, etc, etc which all have an effect. No rules in golf, you can do anything..give it a shot
Hey! Here is some more videos that include this topic th-cam.com/video/ATBYM9vbfO8/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/KvRcyX9OElY/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/RmloegfB6Fw/w-d-xo.html
Hey! Yes you are adding right side bend........but.......because at the top you are already in left side bend....your lead shoulder and hip will remain lower to start the downswing until about 1/2 down.. Let's say you have 30* of left side bend.......to start the downswing you are adding right side bend 1*,2*,3*, etc.......if you add 15* of right side bend to start the downswing........but you had 30* of LEFT side bend at the top........ 30* Left side bend - 15* added right side bend=you are still 15* left side bend..... Hope that helps
I really enjoy your videos. Not a big deal, but I do wish you and many others would simply use 'Lead & Trail' instead of 'Left and Right'. It's just a nuisance for us lefties to have to switch every thing mentally. Anyway, thank you for the instruction.
Hey, thanks Kevin. Ironically, when I use lead and trail side a lot of new beginner golfers who are righty will send me messages saying they wish I would just use left and right so it was easier. So I choose to annoy the lesser population : )
Why does everybody want the hips way open before impact. If you let shoulders, arms, wrist release in front of your body your shots will be straighter, instead of swiping clubhead to left on impact. Where is the target? In front of you or to your left? If your left hand grip is too strong, you must rotate to left to square clubface at impact. So complicated, 20 moves to swing a golf club straight. Alot of player's are starting to neutralize grips to avoid lower back problems.
Been an athlete all life. All star hockey player, baseball pitcher, competitive golfer mini tour player. I'm talking about finish position & rotating shoulders too fast. Jack Nicholas. Greg Norman, Johnny Miller & Moe Norman finished swing pointing towards target, especially Moe who hit the ball dead straight every time. A pitcher releases arm directly to target, not at 1st base. The finish is a result. Tennis forehand is side arm move. In the golf swing right arm & hand, wrist works best with submarine style baseball pitch with under hand release motion. You understand what I'm saying & your instruction is very good. 10 different instructors, 10 different opinions, & they are all right. No swing is the same period, just basic principals. The reason Revolution golf instructors are so good, they observe & inform there players who are top pro's, what they see and advise.
Ask David Leadbetter, Nick Price trained hitting shots with right arm , hand only. Try it. This will train your right arm motion in to your swing. This is one of Ben Hogan's teachings in his book , " The 5 modern fundamentals of the golf swing" Read it & you will understand what I am taking about.
thomas ross so you don't do what he's teaching here! I like this technical teaching in every detail here verses what you said of shoulders hands release and hitting ball with right hand what ever that is in technical way and we can critique it in technical way, some people like diferent ways of teaching I like technical then trying it practically then when I play I think one thought to know it will give me a miss on one side of course to exactly where I'm arming

Hope all is well!
@@CogornoGolf Thanks so much! Will look into the swing analysis.
The feel of increasinf the flex of my right hip at the start of the backswing seems to carry the left/right hip/shoulder tilt angles nicely for me
When you say increasing flex of right hip...what do you mean? Im curious...like you bend over more?
Eric Cogorno Golf: my feel is to push the right glute back, helps my rotation and avoid sliding/losing angles at beginning of downswing
Another great video Eric!
Thanks :)
Great teaching video !!
Thanks!
But good question, not 100% sure...
great one and one i very much needed
Appreciate it!
Wowow- I have a lot of work to do! Thx!
Happy to help :)
Eric, just so I'm clear on this, you are talking about transition into the downswing? It appears your left hip and shoulder are only lower for a split second happening at the start of the downswing. By the time you get to club parallel to the ground your hips are level.
That is correct.
Great video. Most of golfers focus on back swing and neglect down swing
You are amazing. Great work!
Thank you! Happy to help
Hi Eric, great video! Would this also apply to longer clubs (hybrids / fairway woods)? Thanks!
Yes
It never fails!
I have been studying this for awhile and i NEVER picked up on tilt=no rotation... Because it kinda actually LOOKED like it did.. But now it makes incredible sense.... Now i have to rewind... Not paying attention...lol
:)
Eric, can the chest moving towards the ground also be considered as a downswing starting move?
Yes
Eric, how do you get your tilts even at address for a wedge when your right hand is always lower on the club? Something must be done to lower your right hand on the grip.
Right hand grip on club should only provide minimal amount of tilt in and of itself. Less right side bend with wedge than longer clubs. Club length also plays a role in setup
This is my current struggle for years. How do I practice this move and get your feed back until I’m better?
Join Cogornogolf.com premium so I can see your swings
So that’s what Alex Noren is doing as part of his pre-shot routine. Does this make it hard to “ keep your head behind the ball” ?
Yes, he exaggerates..
Yes it does...you have to add right side bend after to keep the head centered....
obviously these things are happening without you thinking 1 then 2 etc
I'm a big early right shoulder dropper, then I will spin my hips. With no rotation and a strong grip you have a left to left death shot. Hard habit to break. Gonna try everything mentioned. Thanks.
gotta get rid of the left, going left. Either make sure all the balls start to the right or take out the curve
A lot to understand. Timing is critical. Will have to work on this. A challenging idea.
Yessir....lots of moving parts in the golf swing. Knowledge is power IF you can dumb it down into manageable pieces
When you say “I’m not a big drill guy” - can you elaborate - how do you get students to work on their swings? Just curious. Thanks!
You def need feedback
usually one of the 3
1. Video
2. mirror
3. Feedback station (drill)
I'm just saying sometimes you need to hit some balls and experiment with feels, don't always need a "drill" to get a movement correct.
Eric Cogorno Golf I watched the rest of the video and get what you mean. I agree that you have to video. If you’re not using video you’re not making changes in my opinion.
I have the dropping of right shoulder problem in my swing. I have a hard time to keep the left shoulder lower than the right in transition.
It goes lower FOR A SPLIT SECOND....BEFORE....if goes back and round. That's the literal....there could be 100 ways to feel that different per person
Have to learn to shallow the arms/club separately...would watch the videos on that as well. Lead shoulder lower with shaft shallowing is $$$$
Good stuff Eric
Thanks!
One odd thing I have noticed doing this... I get the sequencing wrong unless I add a pause at the top. Once added I can do it.
You can play like Hideki!
Compare shoulder tilt with a wedge vs. a driver. Does tilt get naturally flatter with a longer club or should it remain about the same? Something I have been working on lately as I have felt I have been too flat with all my clubs, particularly 5 iron and longer.
How can that work for driver if spine angle is tilted away from the target at adress?
Is it a different downswing?
Thank you
Still the same ideas...Driver with the ball on a tee and angle of attack more up you can do it different ways.
With more tilt at address....your left should should still be lower than your right by top of backswing
What the difference in left hip going down than just squatting are setting into transition ?
If you increase the bend in the left leg the left side of pelvis should go down
If you straighten the left leg the pelvis should go up
If you increase bend in transition first it should go down and then as you straighten it later in downswing it should go up
If you add right side bend does this not raise the left hip and shoulder?
Yes.
Left shoulder and hip lower to start
Then right side bend gets it back to level
Then it goes up
Great looking swing you have, I want that. I don't want the attire look the guy at the 9:00 mark is sporting though. Geez, Chicago Black Socks.....
:)
When rotating do you turn your right hip or your left hip?
Both....which feel will work best for you? Who knows
At impact (7m 59s) your left shoulder is higher than your right and your hips are about square but you seem to be saying something different like your left hip/shoulder need to be lower?
Hey Tim!
Left shoulder should be lower at the top of backswing
Left shoulder still lower in transition to about left arm parallel
You want to shoot for shoulders being same level as address at P6 (last parallel) as a stock
LEft shoulder will go UP from last parallel through impact
Hopefully I demonstrated OK
Ultimate. Period.
:)
I've had problems with rotation for ever how can I send you a video of my swing cheers
Send me an email to ecogorno@yahoo.com and I'll give you info for swing analysis
1. Because you grip the club with your right hand lower on the grip, that pre sets the tilts
IF you were to add left side bend at address you would have to match a bunch of other variables...
Make sure your right hip doesnt kick out to the right
Keep your head from moving too much toward target with it (can be hard to rotate from)
Change your right arm bend
Increases odd of shoulders being aimed left
Change the angle of the club lower
etc, etc, etc which all have an effect.
No rules in golf, you can do anything..give it a shot
Can you expand the tilt feeling
Hey!

Confused ur another video said add right bend during downswing?
Got it,I will try it,thanks.
I'm working on the second part (the one that'll be in the next video) where everything levels out and my right hip (I'm a lefty) comes up.
Top tips super
Thanks!
I struggle with this and transition, I seem to look my right leg out on back swing, and sometimes sway, any thoughts
Yea, take up bowling.
One more Time top !!!!!!!
Thanks :)
HOW TO MAKE A THREE SIDED PRETZEL.
Sounds like a good video!
So I choose to annoy the lesser population : )
great vid ...but the flashing segways are distracting /annoying
Thanks for the feedback!
Why does anyone in any sport (baseball throw, baseball swing, football throw, tennis forehand, etc.) have a lot of rotation?
Lol you make it sound your way is easy I'm sure you must of learnt lots thoughts to get to level you have
Been an athlete all life.
