Christiania - Freedom at Any Cost? | Freetown Christiania History

  • Freetown Christiania lies next to Christianshavn in Copenhagen, and it's been a free part of Europe since 1971. It's also been a source of much debate.
Between 800 and 1000 people live in Christiania, in old military barracks that were left after the military moved out in 1971. Squatters, hippies and anarchists started to occupy the area, and they soon proclaimed that it was a free town called Christiania.
The headline was that civilians had conquered the forbidden city of the military. But the government has tried to reclaim the area many times, and constantly tries to introduce more and more rules and a sense of order to the anarchy. A prime reason for that is that drugs have traditionally been sold openly in Christiania - and that still takes place today.
In this video I should you the main areas of Christiania, and I also go into the history and speculate about the future of the free town. Will it remain a free haven for outcasts, or will the government reclaim this part of Copenhagen? Or has it already changed into something completely different from when it started in 1971?

Good informative video. Its a shame it doesn't have the same vibe it had during the 70s. Alas all good things most come to an end! Hope to visit there one day. Thanks for sharing.

Well said! But I truly think that new and hopefully better things will pop up instead. Maybe not there, but somewhere else and in a different form. Thanks for checking it out!

Thank you! They don't - but they really should. I think they're not really organized enough so that it would work, but it would make sense to make people exchange money for their currency... Haha, maybe it'd be a good hint for them :D

The idea of a self governing area that accepts all sorts of different kinds of people is very appealing to me. I've been a social misfit in 'normal' society for as long as I can remember, always being outcast and pushed away so I'd probably manage to fit in here ok. The only thing that I wouldn't be interested in is the drugs. I've had my experiences with drugs years ago and I generally didn't like it. I'd just avoid that bit of it I guess. Any road up, it does seem like a cool place to live.

Unfortunately, drugs have always been a huge part of Christiania - from its start and to this very day. I think it would be a lovely place if it was just a happy commune without all the pushers.

That was really interesting. This is the first time I have heard about this town. I guess even ‘utopia’ can have its problems if you ‘don’t fit in with the misfits’!

Thank you! Haha yeah, I found that bit quite ironic actually. I've known about this place for a long time but I didn't really look into the history until now - and I think it's the same for most people here
