Well, well! Seahouses! My dad was head greenkeeper here in the late 1980s through to the mid 90s before he retired. He'd previously been head greenkeeper at Bamburgh up the road. My brother had a hole in one on the 15th when he was only 13. So pleased to see you enjoying the course and the spectacular views. Played it with my two lads a couple of years ago, (we live in Somerset now) reminiscing about a late dad and grandad.
Great video!
❤
I used to walk around the coastline of the golf couse when I was a lad on holiday with my family back in the sixties. When I come back to the Northeast to visit my family I will bring my clubs and play Seahouses, but when its summer as I know its cold in winter. Cheers
Thanks Matt, great idea for a series, however, I do agree that £75 cannot realistically be termed as budget, more like mid-range. £50 and under would be budget (and yes, I know this one was £40 😉). Would be good to to see some in the south, and not only at St Georges in Weybridge/Sandwich, as living south of London, this course is anything but budget when taking into account travel and accommodation costs!
Lot to play in Surrey/East Sussex around £30-50. Sunningdale Heath is my favourite, don't judge on the length and par
My ears pricked when you said Bamburgh Castle. I have a black and white photo of me sitting on one of the cannons there when I was 6 years old. I'm now 76 and living in Australia, I bought back memories.
Finally! For those of us who live outside of GB, this is so incredibly good to see and know, at least for me and my crew. GB is, and remains, the origin of golf, which is why a golf trip there is a must for every serious golfer. But today's state of the world, every single person, has a budget to follow. To see the possibilities of "cheap" golf is therefore extremely motivating as a normal person may be able to afford a "high-end" course but probably want to play several during a trip, at least that's how I am. Thanks!
Eyemouth golf club hole 6 is amazing
What a creative idea for new content, Matthew! And it helps us blue-collar golfers who can't afford the outrageous green fees to play big-name courses, find hidden gems.👍 Have you been working on your putting, mate..? Signs of the old Fryer showing with the flat stick this round.👌
If you like those sea views then try Dunstanburgh Castle, just down the road.
I am in Seattle Washington. My price range for a budget course would be 50 dollars and under.
My list would be
1. Price
2. Course condition vs the amount of golf traffic.
3. Views and layout
4. Practice facilities and bar/restaurant.
Love the series Matt and I’m looking forward to the rest of the courses. Hard to beat the scenery and price of this first course. Cheers!
Looks great. £75 is a bit steep to call a budget course but appreciate that some courses are silly money now. Plenty around under £50, though perhaps summer fees bump that up a little
It’s dunstanburgh Matt Dunbar is in Scotland, you would love Dunstanburgh a cracking links course
Come to Denmark. Most of our courses a priced around 40£
Played here a few times whilst on holiday and you made the same mistakes I did. It makes me feel better. Great price and course. Dunstanburgh GC down the road is my favourite in that neck of the woods though.
Come to Co. Derry in Ireland. Moyola golf course in Castledawson, Magherafelt. Great course
Forrest pines in Lincolnshire, its unbelievable for the cost. You cam get a round for £35 even in summer and its pure. The other option here is Seacroft in Skegness
Here’s 3 within a few miles of each other, Aberdour, Burntisland and Kinghorn. Lots more in Fife.
So a couple of suggested courses from me which I feel fit the bill and a bit of background.
Cavendish GC - £55/65 Summer Green Fee, Original 1925 Alister MacKenzie course. They try and brag that they are an 'Inspiration for Augusta' as well with the dates of opening.
Bondhay GC - £25/30/40 Summer Green Fee, 1990 Donald Steel course which was Danny Willett's junior club. Also has a 9 hole academy course and driving range
College Pines GC - £20/26 (lowest priced) Summer Green Fee, Heathland course on the same patch of land as the much more expensive Worksop Golf Club. Also home of Joe Dean who hold a DP World Tour card
i remember playing there on a society day many years ago. In all my years, I have never played in weather anywhere near as bad as it was that day. When we arrived, it was dry, but blowing a gale. As I was on the second hole, the skies opened, and we had heavy rain. The rain soon turned to hail, which was quite sore due to the gale force winds. The hail didn't last too long because it turned to snow. Sure enough, within ten minutes, it turned back to rain, which lasted most of the round. The one positive was that the weather was a great leveller, as the low handicaped players were struggling just as much as the higher handicappers. I really enjoyed watching this video as we didn't get to take in the beauty of the course, and I've often wondered what it would be like on a normal day. I'm now looking forward to the rest of the series. I must go back and play Seahouses again sometime.
St Augustine's golf club in Ramsgate would be great for this series, 20 mins away from Royal St George's too so record one there too on your stay. Not enough Kent courses used to film
Great idea for a series! If you're down south (when it's dry!) you should try the old course at Billingbear golf club in Wokingham. 9 hole course, but very similar style to this one but arguably in better condition. It has a really fun par 3 course as well.
While you were in the area, Warkworth GC would have been the place to visit. Hands down the best budget course there is in Northumberland. Amazing
And i start my captaincy there on Saturday 🥳👌
I play in the Seahouses yearly Texas scramble with BBQ included in the price of £25 per person. Will be there this year in August. Great day out.
Great idea for a series. Looking forward to them all.
Glad to hear it! Thanks for watching
Me and a friend played this course a couple of weeks ago. Agree with the summary to be honest. Flags need replacing and was a shame to have to skip 3 holes, however the views on the back 9 were stunning. Overall an enjoyable course and for about £28 I've got no complaints
possibly worth revisiting to include a value for money category as this place would have to get a 5 for that ...love all ur content squire hope the fam is doing very well and healthy and happy
Matt you defiantly need to go and visit mullion golf club in Cornwall! Great condition course and spectacular views! Peter finch could rate it enough when I watched him play there last year.
Pop down the coast 30 or so miles to Seaton Carew £45 at the moment £70 high summer and hosting the English Amateur this yr. Brilliant links and you will not find better craic in the clubhouse anywhere
This is where I grew up playing golf, sadly I am (just) old enough to remember when it was a 9 hole course and if I being honest it is a great 9 hole course the new 9 are mostly fairly indifferent holes - although if they could ever get a touch more land then there would be seem real potential.
I haven't played Seahouses for probably 30 years, nice to see not much has changed. I am sure 14th was originally the 12th but was always a tough hole. The 15th is definitely one of the greatest short par 3s in England, and when the wind blows very hard... from the drone footage it looks as though they have tarted up the old WW2 concrete observation post by the 15th tee.
come and try ogbourne downs in wiltshire, hillside course on chalk ground, played dry all winter, awesome challenge, windy and challenging for a normal members course
Seahouses, is a great course. the view is as good as you say. It’s worth the trip. The par 3 over the cliff is fun and fantastic (I got a par). The members and staff are warm and friendly. Don’t forget Seahouses is an amazing place so a great pint and fish and chips is a must.
Should play Hart Common in Westhoughton (where Rick Shiels started playing).
Has a Trackman range and is in really great condition. Green Fee for a weekend is £25 and during the week £18. Has some lovely views especially when sat outside the clubhouse having a pint afterwards.
Played the course about 20 years ago, absolute gem then and boy does that wind remind me of the weird lines we had to take off the tee !
Great idea Matt you must try Boston golf club in Lincolnshire a real gem! fantastic greens
Refreshing content Matt as I feel that YouT golfers seem to focus on well-known, expensive courses or ones that non-members can't play...
What a great course that is. But for one even better, at £50 summer green fees, try Reay Golf Club on the north coast of Scotland. Similar feel but even more varied, a historic course redesigned by James Braid in the 1930s. Do the NC500, take your clubs, and take in a couple of 9 holers as well, Durness and Gairloch, all excellent!
i often play at boldmere golf course in birmingham, mainly because i live next to it but also because its green fee is like £14 in the afternoon on a weekday and just scraping past 20 quid on the weekend, its ridiculously cheap, it probably helps that its next to sutton coldfield golf club which is extortionate by comparison at £95 green fee and a few grand all in for a membership and join fee. Have to say you probably do get what you pay for at £14 because its often not that well kept during the winter and its not got any fancy views besides a hole or 2 being next to a pretty lake i guess. But you can certainly play golf and not have too bad a time and its the full 18 although quite short. Absolutely not the best budget golf course... but probably the best i know of if you are on a budget.
Castle Park is my club in Gifford East Lothian, £42 per month and £20 per round for guests! Plays like a semi links with park land style as it is more in land. An unreal course for the price!
Great value, played it last September, the greens were very fast.
The best budget golf course has to be Eastbourne Downs, green fee £25, 1908 course 6579 yards. Great sea views, tough but fair challenge.
This was a municipal until recently, now run by a charity, so interesting business model for affordable golf, well worth investigating, the future of affordable golf has to be non for profit
Any idea of the condition at the moment? Tempted to get down there if it's in a good state, not too far from London
@@jasontorquato2027 it’s in perfect condition, it’s on chalk so drains wonderfully. Greens are true and fast, still using winter tees until April, but these tees are still 5800 yards, so long enough at this time of year.
@@jasontorquato2027 Played it recently and it was in perfect condition. A real Gem.
Brilliant course I’ve played it in the summer and winter 👌 great food for a reasonable price in the clubhouses 5 out 5 for me
Grantown-on-Spey is a lovely wee course which I think is under £50 in the Cairngorm Mountain range, stunning scenery with a good few driveable par 4s in there.
If you don’t mind the travel, get yourself to Chiltern Forest GC in Aylesbury (near Milton Keynes) really well kept, very interesting course for around £30/£40.
Pitch and putt course, only half difficult holes were the par 3s where you seemed to lose all your shots
Give Borth & Ynyslas a try, out on the Cardigan Coast, or Deer Park in Howth (Dublin) - both great value courses.
Drumoig near St Andrews is great. 9, 10, 11 play hard over the water. And great views over tentsmuir and Standrews.
Here's some to try, all can be played for under £50.
Cavendish (Buxton)
Garforth
Scarborough South Cliff
Malton and Norton
I agree with other comments that £75 is a touch high - especially if I play with my wife and it becomes £150!
This is a great content to do Matt as too many courses are over priced to the normal player wanting to play somewhere different,
This looks a fab course with stunning views,
Loved the video keep them coming and keep up the good work
Great course. Par 3s are amazing. Once travelled from Cumbria and back in one day to play in their Open Comp. Try and add Kirkby Lonsdale Golf Club to your list. Can’t be beaten in my opinion.
The Dorset Golf Resort - great round to play..
Ferndown Forest for an even more budget course..
The Braid Hills 1 in Edinburgh - great course with amazing views over the city and out over th Forth.
Nice course to see, thanks for sharing. I played a course called Kington for£17 last week. Hands down the best course for views I've played, maybe worth a showcase
How about you come down to Devon, Matt. Some fantastic courses here for a budget price, Royal North Devon is only £50 at the moment. Fingle Glen on the edge of dartmoor is only £30 mid summer
You want to go to boundary lakes in Southampton dirt cheap and absolutely amazing course massive greens 👌👌
My local 2 are morley hayes, and Burton on trent golf club, and they're both £40 in summer, but like others, I wouldn't call it budget. There's a golf course opposite my house that I use for training, and it's 10 pouds for a round, but even on the first tee, it's obvious why it is such a budget price
What a great looking course. As for your play - very impressed with your recovery with the wedges. Amazing touch - would you mind spending a wee bit more time on your thought process on some of those wedge shots - I know you were a bit frustrated that you had missed the green, but your touch in this video was very good.
You should come down to my home track. Hamptworth country club golf course £65. It’s high end for that cost. Outside that there’s 2 great tracks near me. Moors Valley around £25 and a par 3 course Solent Meads £11. Beautiful sea views from SM and bizarrely a 210 yard par 3 on a family friendly course 😂
Great idea for a series Matt. I am still trying to get over the t shots over some of the greens.. People could be in danger if I am teeing off........
That has got to be the best 5 you've played on a par 3 😂 great recovery and then to get it out of your mind, well done...its a great piece of golfing country round there, you should try Dunstanburgh Castle course just down the road it's a great course, played it numerous times when I was stationed up that way in the RAF, hopefully going back for the first time in 30 odd years with my son to play a few courses on our latest golfing trip....
Great vlog looking forward to the rest of the series Matt.
If in that area you HAVE to play Dunstanburgh!!! (Also think you may get Foxton or even Slaley under £75 as well) Then get over to Brampton in Cumbria.
I'd recommend Cleeve Hill. Highest point in the cotswolds, old Tom Morris course, beautiful views and less than 40 quid a round.
Love the idea for this series and to be fair, you're opening up a huge amount of very nice courses that us average golfers would actually be able to play.
Maybe check out the following if you get chance, as they come in just about under budget and have spectacular settings:
Newquay
West Cornwall (St. Ives)
Nefyn,
I'll definitely be watching all of this series, so good luck with the viewing figures! 😁🙌🏼
I think your 75 pound limit is fair, good idea to show these 'hiddenbgems'. I'd suggest looking at courses in NE Scotland vwhere I'm from, lots of great courses there. One Ud suggest as good value which ticks most of your boxes would be Kemnay GC just outside Aberdeen, I used to be a member there and my twin brother still plays there. Paul Lawrie used to play there. The course and clubhouse have changed a lot since then. Another in the area with links to Paul Lawrie would be Banchory GC where Paul was assistant Pro during this early pro career.
Try playing The Hirsel golf course, Coldstream. Very good course.
Matt, Dr Stableford helps! Solid 34 points scored! That's not a shame, that well played on a not known course. I like the your new series and will be follow you. Cheers!
my only little suggestion would be to enrol a local to play with, for bits of info about the course/area...as well as have a mate to banter with
I mentioned the essex golf and country club it's a championship course 7000 yard and at the moment the green fees are £30
Keep up the good work Matt👍⛳️ you’ve got to try southerness near Dumfries, amazing links course
Kington Golf Club in Herefordshire. Highest 18 hole course in England. £31 for a summer green fee. Some of the best views you’ll find on a golf course
Try Trethorne , Launceston -Cornwall , lovely track..
Got to agree with some of the other comments Matt. £75 not rally budget IMO. Upavon GC might be worth a look.
Matt get yourself to Cleveland Golf Club. Oldest course in Yorkshire a gorgeous links and about £50 to play.
Have played both Seahouses and Dunstanburgh. Both are great value for money.
Heard Dunstanburgh is great!
The northeast is obviously cheaper than many areas! One of the cheapest ways to go are points coarses! Maybe not always a club feel, but the better ones are great value.
I grew up playing cheap muni courses for $20. I've found some nice places for $40-$50. But most places now are $80+.
This is a good series since many people will never play TPC Sawgrass for $700 a round 😮💨
Lovely video, played Seahouses a few times whilst on holiday and can echo your comments about the staff and members plus you might get to see dolphins whilst playing 14 and 15.
Definitely say should have a max budget of £50 maybe £55 summer, 3 courses close together in north east will always be cheap, you aren't finding those kind of green fees or membership prices often anywhere near big expensive courses, good place to go would be leasowe on the wirral or Northop in North Wales and not forgetting Blackburn gc, played them all and they're wonderful courses
Have you tried dunstanbourgh Castle or Longhirst Hall both under 40 pound a round.longhirst Hall has two courses a championship and a lakes course
Love this, great video Matt. Lovely to see you playing on the only sort of courses I'm normally going to be able to play on. I can't justify membership at a club given that I'm lucky to be able to get 2 rounds a month in, even through the summer, and I'm not prepared to pay more than £40 for a round at any time, so this is right up my street.
Thought on 2nd tee Dunbar round the corner, pointing south! When it’s about 75 miles north!
Love it up there. I'm away in Northumberland with the family next week. Clubs are always in the boot if I can escape! This is great content Matt, keep it relatable to the fans!
Matt you must play Seaton Carew. It’s a Dr Alister MacKenzie designed course. You’ll love it.
This is awesome! I’m actually going to the UK to play golf in that area (Bamburgh castle) in July. I’ve spent a few looking for other “budget” courses that I can play at. I also plan on playing in Scotland and Northern Ireland if all goes well.
I will definitely be looking forward to more of these videos as I always take your advice in high regard
So many great courses here in the North East.
Eyemouth Golf Club should definitely be on your list to play when you're over in July. Par 72, and a great test of golf. Can play any day of the week for under £50 too . 6 and 13 are two very different holes to play!! ⛳️
@@stiggee just looked it up. That 6th hole looks amazing.
Enjoyable video Matt looking forward to the rest of the series
You should come to the East Midlands. Many beautiful courses for £25 to £35. Kilworth Springs, Brampton Heath, Rutland Water, Cold Ashby etc, etc. All within half an hour of my house, all Beautiful Characteristic courses & all for less than £40.
I agree that £75 is too high to be considered "budget". Here in Minnesota (USA) where I live, the average rates (with cart/buggy) at busy public golf courses is $45/£35.75 (weekdays) and $65/£51.75 (weekends) per person. That's the average at very nice golf courses. I work at one (Riverwood National GC/Otsego, MN). The budget golf courses (around here) will cost you $20 less for each (weekday/weekend with cart/buggy). The quality of the golf course will obviously be reflected in that price range but a lot of times they are well kept but just short (by today's standards), might only be a 9-hole course that you play twice or lacking in amenities (small clubhouse, no restaurant, small fleet of golf carts/buggies, etc.). Many times these are also cheaper because they are family owned in rural areas... I love finding and playing those little hidden gems!!
Would love to see more courses like this. Maybe some in Ireland as well if possible!
You probably could quit your search now. What an amazing course for that price. Could not believe it wasn't packed with players. I'm going to really enjoy this series.
Church Stretton golf course in Shropshire £25 a round ......great views of the Shropshire Hills what a gem of a course
How is £75 a budget golf course? 😂 To me and everyone else in the real world, budget is about £30 or less. They do exist, and some are great. One near here is £16 and fantastic for the money.
That's the max, as you have seen this one is £40.and the ones are at the higher end of the budget will be a good comparison to the lower priced ones
@@Mattfryergolf I’d want a red carpet rolled out on my arrival for £75 a game! 😂
@@Mattfryergolfpeople forget that if you are a member of a course you can get a county card. Often…not always…that county card can get you onto some courses at half price.
So your video is completely sensible Matt 👍
If I played a top notch course for £70 it’s for a memory.
Use GolfNow if you want to get a round for £15.99 🤷♂️
Keep up the great content Matt
Great idea, for most of us £50 is the higher end but if it’s really good up to £75 is about right. Distinct lack of budget links down southeast(as in zero probably) Crowboro Beacon GC in Kent is very good, but you’d have to play it on the twilight deal at £60 to keep it under the £75
No way is 75 budget.
Under 30 is budget. 30 to 100 is ok. Over 100 is extortionate.
Matt you need to try Welshpool golf club mid wales you will love it 👍
Love the videos by the way, I’ll show you round all of them!
Great to stumble across and watch this video Matt, as funnily enough, a couple of us are off for a little golfing trip to Northumberland next week and are playing Seahouses (along with Dunstanburgh Castle and Alnmouth). Good to see the course and I agree that the views and holes by the coast were great! I reckon £50 should be the limit for a truly 'budget' course. There are a few in North Wales you could try such as Abergele, Rhuddlan and also a lovely little heathland course on the Wirral, actually called Wirral Golf Club, would be worth a go. Looking forward to the series Matt!
This is a terrific idea and a great video. Can't wait to see the others. Go to Cleeve Hill Matt!
I think you are about right Matt. I'm willing to go to £150 occasionally for a really good course but that is a once or twice a year treat.
Need to head up to Spey Bay!!!!
I stayed and played at Clyne on the Gower last year. Way within your budget and very much worth a look.
Great video, looking forward to seeing the series
£75 max, and I wouldn't do that often! Great to see you out at the smaller clubs, which will encourage a few more bodies out there. Good for all!
You should do the 30 shot challenge on one of these budget courses with someone would be fun to watch and possibly come back to it to do in the red try to get it dialed in
Played here a good few years back granted in conditions that turned it into bordering crazy golf...but even then seemed worth the fee...
Agreed - Seahouses, Bamburgh, Dunstanbro - all great fun and great value. Can I put in a plug for Gilling Castle - under new ownership this year and still only £20 for the day. Great views of the North York Moors on a clear day! Don't come until it's dried out tho - swamp golf is us just now :-{
Budget golf for me is sub £50 but I love what you’re doing…try coming further south and courses near the M25…challenging the London ish TH-camrs…Josh White Ash Mullens Bullard etc but keeping the budget intact 👍
