Caught his solo tour at Illinois State University when I was a sophomore there in 1976. This was after his massive exposure from touring as part of the Jefferson Starship. A long overlooked blues icon until then
He came into a club where i was working in 1968. He asked me if it was OK to sit in - he just wanted to see what i'd say. It was a black club and i was the only white guy in the place. when i assured him that it was fine with me, he broke out his violin and proceeded to SMOKE the damn thing. I hit the standby switch on my amp and sat down out front to watch and listen. He was the best musician that i heard in L A, and i took that story back to my hometown in Texas. Wonderful player.
Thank you Bill for this wonderful music and your comments. Though I love the blues and I am a huge fun of B.B.King , Buddy Guy , SR Vaughan , E. Clapton and all the other greats, PJC playing blues with his fiddle and this clip is news to me !!!! He certainly is a virtuoso !!! Can't believe I've never heard of him 'till now ! The short history really awesome . Excellent work :)
Papa John Creach (born John Henry Creach; May 28, 1917 - February 22, 1994) was an American blues violinist. He played for Jefferson Airplane (1970-1975), Hot Tuna, Jefferson Starship, Jefferson Starship - The Next Generation, the San Francisco All-Stars (1979-1984), The Dinosaurs (1982-1989), and Steve Taylor. Creach recorded a number of solo albums and was a frequent guest at Grateful Dead and Charlie Daniels Band concerts. He was a regular guest at the early annual Volunteer Jams, hosted by Charlie Daniels, which exposed him to a new audience that was receptive to fiddle players. This is a clip from his appearance on the Flip Wilson Show in the early 70s.

Saw him about 6 or 7 times, was just great. Saw him in Boston 3-4 times and a few times near Palo Alto,CA. I have one album that was made and marked Not for Sale. Sat next to his wife a few times in Boston. Saw him also play in East Stoneham, Maine in the 70's. Amazing musician. He and Grappelli were the best violinist/fiddle players evah!
PaPa John Creach, Stephane Grappelli, Jen-Luc Ponty and Sugar Cane Harris. You are so fortunate to have seen PaPa John. Check out the Rites of Spring concert with Jean-Luc Ponty, Al Di Meola and Stanley Clarke. It's masterful.
True blues. No one can touch Papa John.
This needs a love button. Saw him with Hot Tuna 1972. Wore out his albums. His playing speaks my feelings for him.
Saw him as a opening act to a rock group back in the late 1970s. So great! Never forget.

I got to see him in a small college venue in 78 .. His wife was there , his combo was uptight and he makes sparks that light up his eyes .
