Something about watching these drum playthroughs just opens my eyes to how much detail you pack into these songs. I never knew about the different kicks you used while performing, that's incredible!
It's such a privilege to see these videos after all those years in DT. You absolutely killed the drum parts and contributed to music so much more than you get the credit. ❤
I've won awards drumming and played professionally for 50 years yet feel like a beginner watching you Mike. Thanks for posting things and inspiring the rest of us...
I grieved more for the loss of Mr Mangini to DT than I ever thought that I would. While I love Portnoy 1.0 era DT stuff, I thought they were in decline with Systematic Chaos. Black Clouds wasn't too bad at all, but I just felt they were losing their way, with drum parts that were getting quite stale. Mr Mangini breathed in a new life to the band, and elevated the music. People say he is a robot, but they misunderstand him. He is just that precise. His drum sound in a live setting shows what a beast he is on the kit. I really don't like that DT got rid of Mr Mangini to bring Portnoy back into the fold, because the music is quickly going to become stale again, as MP has shown virtually no progress in his playing since the 90s. It's the same old LRKK or LRLRKK etc. The fact that DT have chosen to virtually ignore the Mangini era while live, except for Barstool Warrior and This is the Life says everything we need to know about the difference in levels. We will never see Pale Blue Dot played live ever again, and that makes me incredibly sad. I'm just grateful for Mr Mangini's almost-thirteen year contribution to the band, because he is a one-of-a-kind musician. We share a similar philosophy on ergonomics and use of cymbals and toms as melodic devices, alongside being rhythmic.
@@AllThisOverASliceOfGabagoolDo you really think they should have played more songs from the MM era when 3 albums from the MP era weren't played? Joke!
@@marcusmvcm It's not a joke at all! What Dream Theater have basically done by default is said 'fuck you to all the Dream Theater fans who came into the family during the Mangini era.'
@@AllThisOverASliceOfGabagool Absolutely right what you said. MM DT Era will not be forgotten, It was progressive, now with MP RLRLKK eternal pattern its a new genre that could be called deprogressive.
Thanks, Mike, for everything you have & haven't done yet. You and your family have a very Merry Christmas 🎅 🎄Your drumming will now live on forever ❤️ 💙
It's incredible how MG's drumming was overshadowed by an overly processed, lifeless mix that stripped away the nuances and dynamics of such a technical and precise drummer. Mike Mangini is an exceptional musician, and I hope to one day hear his recordings presented without excessive audio processing, as was done with the re-release of Images and Words. It would be a well-deserved recognition of his talent. I also look forward to seeing him in a band where his full potential can shine without unnecessary filters.
That kit sounds good. Im enjoying the various bass kick patterns. He puts in these weird bits at the prechorus i think. Its like a funk break racing time then at the chorus a drop back in time then poof shuffle into straight feel. Like a rabbit in the hat trick i feel. Maybe its even time. Maybe 6 can work with four just as 3 to seven or 5 to five. Im just talking clouds but i think i sorta get his ideas. Carey does weird stuff with time like that aside from polyrythmic focus. Both have proven themselves as real modern drummers of a high caliber. A bit different obviously yes but some cross over. Way cool stuff.
I'm not a pessimist by nature but when I see @mikemangini play, I'm almost sad to think that there are songs that we won't be able to hear live anymore... Your time as a drummer was a huge rebound for DT. Pleasure to you soon in others project! 🎶musically your!
It was such a breath of fresh air to hear 14 years ago MM’s “orchestral” approach to the kit with DT’s music, and the latter evolved because of it, eventually producing such iconic tracks like The Alien, which I doubt will ever be played live by DT again. You can hear that orchestral approach in every song MM played, even the above. You can also hear from the new songs, that that’s now gone. Keep these coming Mike, and PLEASE do Drumeo. 🙏👍🤘🤘🤘🔥🥁🔥
Well, he is a much more skilled drummer compared to Portnoy in every way. Where Portnoy plays some cool stuff, he is just a rock drummer with a big kit of drums.

It's funny that he used 4 kick drums to record ADTOE - yet after EQ Gating. Compression Limiting Mixing, Mastering - you would be really hard pressed to hear any difference at all in the final CD.
Hi Mike! I had a question regarding the configuration of your drums. Does the position of the rototoms (octovans, rocket drums) have any effect on their natural sound? That is to say, I suppose that the air has a different behavior in the attack. In the mix of the self-titled album and in the following live I feel that they sound like gunshots. Or it's because the mix?

The fact that he plays DT songs makes me miss him on DT. I guess I wish they kept Mangini even they returned Portnoy. Like let Mangini play other songs and portnoy on anything else. Loooove this song and love the videos that give us insight into what was played and how it was played. Pity we can’t see legs or front kick skins. I’m having a hard time hearing which kick is used where. And, for those who dismiss Mangini’s contribution to this album because Petrucci had already programmed the drums, he didn’t write all of the Mangini-isms we see in this video.
1:26 He suddenly received a transmission from his home planet, and that threw him off.
