Hiking and SLEEPING on a volcano! (Volcan Fuego and Acatenango in Antigua, Guatemala)

  • It wasn't easy, but we did it! We hiked to the top of volcan Acatenango and watched Volcan Fuego erupt over and over again! Seeing a volcano erupt was one of our major "Pillars" to accomplish during a year of full-time travel. This hike to see Volcan Fuego for the last few years has been one of the most reliable (and fairly safe) ways to go see a volcano in action! This video covers our journey and experience. We hiked up one day, camped a night up at the base camp, then hiked back down the next day. These volcanoes are located in Guatemala near the beautiful Spanish colonial town of Antigua. As you will see... this hike is not for everyone. If you aren't up for the strenuous hike, there is also nearby Volcan Pacaya that is much easier, but it doesn't give you quite the same experience. Enjoy the video!

Here's the guided tour that we booked on Viator: www.viator.com/tours/Antigua/...
    Our story:
We are Dave and Kelsey from the US. We saved up money, credit card points, and airline miles for three years to afford one year of backpacking the world. We're currently in Antigua, Guatemala! We have plans in 2023 to backpack England, France, Spain, Morocco, Turkey, Greece, Egypt, UAE, Thailand, then who knows where next?! We travel on a reasonable budget and consider ourselves decent travel hackers. We'll share some of that with you and will be turning on the camera any time we do something interesting! If we learn a lot about a place and have extra to share, we will make a vacation travel guide video as well. We'll recommend places that we enjoyed and tell you what to avoid too. Subscribe to follow along as we travel the world!

Acatenango is the one volcano to climb in Guate due to the vistas at the top. But at 3900masl you should come prepared. I climbed it solo and unsupported about 25 years ago.

That's impressive! We saw a few people hiking it on their own, but 99% were with guides

I agree with you guys. Definitely not for the faint of heart. A VERY strenuous trek to say the least. I did the Acatenango trek plus the optional Fuego hike last summer. It was BRUTAL (it didn't help that I didn't wear the proper foot wear and bring enough snack food). I would not recommend this hike to everyone unless you are in reasonably good shape.

Did the optional Fuego hike feel dangerously close? From far way it looked like the hikers were getting CLOSE to where some of the lava was landing. I only talked to 1 guy who did it and he said he didn't end up seeing much from where his guide took him, so I got the feeling he wouldn't recommend it

if you are going to wear hiking shoes for this hike, make sure they are good quality and broken in (key!), which would help with blisters.
