  • A deep dive into the differences between the Harley-Davidson Iron 883 and the Street Bob & Softail Standard. If you're considering both of these models and don't know which would be best for you then the answers to your questions are here. Matt Laidlaw and Nick Culver go into detail on the main differences of the bikes and the things you should ask yourself when choosing between these three models. A lot of riders blindly choose the Iron 883 when maybe they aren't considering all the factors.

    Hey Guys I made a mistake! The Iron 883 has a 3.3 Gallon fuel tank and the Street bob has a 3.5. NOT A GALLON MORE!

      Crazy but cool tank on the Street Bob: I’ve heard (in sales) two people say it looks like a Honda-Gas Tank. I never thought about the similarity but oh well.

    Hey Matt. Loved the new video you and Nick posted. I bought my 2020 Iron 883 from my local HD deal in great Des Moines area and it was based on a few of the vids you had posted in the past. I am a new rider(after a 30 year break from little Suzuki back in day). I love the Iron for what you and Nick both said. Great for newer riders who want to have a bike to control and I do not plan on doing a ton of highway miles. The 80% non highway and 20% highway is a great ratio to make the decision towards the Sporty. PLUS, it is a bad ass looking bike and love the history of the EVO engine and the sound it makes. It is just a blast to get on and ride!!!

      Yeah. The fact that they get this question so much hints at Harley's current target market. They think harley is cool. To their eyes these bikes look similar and for them the money is not a problem.

    • @MattLaidlaw
      @MattLaidlaw  3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      All the points we made about the Iron 883 are also applicable to the Iron 1200. The Iron 1200 is a little more powerful with different bars and cosmetic stuff. The points we hit can be applied to the 1200 as well. You're right though, Maybe we should have specifically used the Iron 1200

    • @MrApiiinr
      @MrApiiinr 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it actually made perfect sense seeing as it was a comparison of entry bikes. You could argue they should have compared the 1200 to a more expensive softail, but realize the 1200 vs 883 really doesn’t have much difference in use. I think it would be harder to justify the 1200 over the Street Bob/Standard because of the closer price proximity. They got down to brass tax. You want to ride but can’t afford a touring model or similarly priced Softail, so you consider the more affordable option. You aren’t necessarily touring cross country, so then the sportster starts to make sense.
      Basically, this video was for me, not necessarily everyone. I’ve ridden and owned a sport bike, a 1200 Sportster, a FLD, and a FLHTK. It’s been a few years since I’ve had a bike, but some day I’m getting back on two wheels. My Dyna was my favorite, the Limited the most capable, the 1200 the most classic, and my Buell... well, if you rode one, you know. I don’t think I ever want as expensive a bike as the Limited, but my crotch rocket days are long passed. I’m a bigger guy that misses riding, but a husband and father who isn’t going too far from his loved ones. So either of these bikes could be in my consideration, but I want my next bike to be the one I keep for as long as I can.
      Thanks Matt & Crew for making your awesome videos. Seeing California’s highways reminds me of my last trip to the west coast for this Florida boy. You guys are the best.

    I came from an Iron883 to the Street Bob. These bikes are not even comparable. I love the rawness of the sporty, but it was way too small for me, I only had that phase because of financial reasons. I think the most valid comment was Nick’s when he referred to “a sweet spot.” The Softail has that wonderful laziness while the Sportster is frenetic. To cut to the point you are a wonderful ambassador for Harley and on the strength of it I’ve just bought a Softail Standard from my local dealer in Norfolk, England - he owes you the commission! I was happy as could be with my 2003 Road King, till my son in-law bought a used 2018 Street Bob, wow, I just loved the new technology, mono-shock suspension, Milwaukee 8 engine and the power to weight ratio these bikes have. I mostly ride the mountains of Utah, Brighton, Snowbird and other canyons nearby. But I’m kind of old school and prefer Chrome over blacked out bikes.
    So while eating brunch for Mother’s Day, at my son in-laws house he tells me about Harley coming out with a mid year model called the Softail Standard, during the conversation I was able to convince my wife that it would be nice to have another Harley, to my amazement she was on board. So May 11 (The next day) I went to Harley Davidson of Salt Lake and rode home the new 2020 Softail Standard, wow, it’s everything I thought it would be and more, best purchase ever and no regrets at all, the only sad thing is I don’t ride the Road King anymore, so it just sits in the garage with the Standard looking good. It’s kinda nice having a spare bike to share with friends & family that ride, but all I want to ride is the Standard. I guess the other sad thing is I just put the bikes in my garage for winter till spring. We don’t get to ride year round here like when I lived in So Cal, but you know I can’t wait for our February Thaw, great vid, Thanks for all the vids you make, love watching them!

      Yep, if I needed to get somewhere I road, I remember many trips to the beach, going to work, great times, this was in the 1970s before helmet laws in California, probably not the smartest thing to ride without one back then, but when your young you sometime think your invincible? Funny thing is here in Utah we have no helmet laws, but I always ware one.
      But I still cringe when I see folks riding Harley’s with flip flops & shorts.

    It would be nice if HD would offer the option of a larger gas tank. For me more range increases the fun of riding.

    Great video. I picked up my first bike a few months ago. I was torn between the 883 and the softail slim. Everyone was telling me my first bike should be the 883 because I was new but I didn't want to end up needing to trade up in 6 months so I went with the 2020 slim. Im super happy I did now. Now that I've gotten comfortable on the slim I can already see that I would be unhappy with the 883.

    I stuck Ohlins rear suspension on my Iron 1200 and it totally changed the ride for the better. The bike sits higher, has more travel, and just soaks up bumps much better than the stock shocks. I honestly didn't really think the change would be as big as it was; it feels sportier. I love my Iron 1200 and don't want want to move up to a bigger ride. It helps that basically all my riding is done on twisty back country roads. Heck, I'm still running the stock exhaust.

    I did exactly what you said in the beginning of the video and traded out of a sportster. Should have just started on the standard or street bob and I would probably have a bit more money in my pocket now too. That being said LRS has been great and I don’t miss the roadster 1200 at all.

    I drive to work on the interstate 30 miles in the morning and again 30 miles back home in the afternoon other than that its all in town and two lane high ways and downtown city streets. I sold my deluxe simply because it was just too big for my style so im guessing the 883 would be better. still thinking though

    My first bike was a 2013 iron 883, candy orange, I loved that bike! Road it for years, I am 5’7 and it was the perfect size for me. I sold it to go see my daughter over seas, years later, a few months ago, I walked into a Harley dealership and walked out with a 2015 dyna street bob. Personally i prefer the street bob over the iron, once again I loved the iron, but I can’t help but feel more ALPHA on the street bob.

    Surprisingly objective review. Along with a helluva lotta people I think the Sporster is the best motorcycle ever made For whatever reason it makes me think of an originally messenger-type of motorcycle hot rodded into a faster/louder home run. Its great for city street, country road cruising but definitely not a highway 80+mph commuter. Although a properly modded 883 will smoke a BT light to light in traffic.

    As someone who rode an 883 Sporty for many years, I found your comparison right on the money. Sportster does have a number of limits on it. Besides those described in this video, The read suspension is just lousy. The cost of upgrading it to a quality set of rear shocks is as much as 1 grand. The brakes, particularly the front are inadequate and the need for a 6th gear is tremendous. I do love the potato, potato, potato sound. It is the essence of a Harley Davidson. Since they switched to fuel inject that sound just isn't the same anymore.
    Most people do upgrade their bikes in any one of several ways, but with a Sportster, you are going to want to start quickly. I'm barely 5'9" and 160lbs, so the seating height and width is perfect for me. If the rider wants to customize their bike for better sound and performance, as well as cosmetically, Be prepared to spend another 2 grand plus.

    What a great comparison video. There is experience here spewing great knowledge everyone should heed. The video itself is significant in its presentation, as its straight forward approach cannot be missed by even the most novice of riders. BY FAR the best produced video about HARLEY DAVIDSON'S ever!

    Matt, you usually have your Harley facts spot on. But how is a 3.5 vs 3.3 gallon tank a gallon more? When you figure in the lower fuel economy the range on the Street Bob would be less than the Sporty.

    My first Harley was a Sportster. From there I went to a big twin and all of the cam chest issues that come with a big twin. This baffles me. When is Harley going to wake up and use the same cam chest design on the big twins as it does on the Sportster?
    They can still keep the big primary/ separate transmission thing going on so it doesn't look like a Sportster engine.
    The quad cam/straight pushrod design is bulletproof yet they keep redesigning the big twins Cam chest trying to get it right? I don't get it.

    Lol. The Street Bob must be better because my dealer talked me into it over the Sportster. He said not to worry about the extra price because it’s a Harley. Lol. I do love it. Returning to riding after a 15 “pause “ and find Bob to be a very comfortable ride.
