The Old Timer PHW Pro Hunter fixed blade knife is one of the best knives for under $30 I have seen in a while. The ironwood handle scales are beautiful and comfortable. The knife carves feather sticks like butter and it is very well balanced. It also comes with a nice leather sheath. All for under $30 at the time I shot this video.

I bought one shortly after you aired this. I am sorry to say I went straight to Amazon for it, an knowing what I know now would of used your link, as I love mine I edc it as its a perfect carry knife fir me, It about a 1/4" longer than the BRK&T highlander special. At five times the savings, an thats knothing against either. The only thing I changed on mine was to fold the belt loop over backwards an glue an vice for a couple of days raising the knife close to two inches when on my belt. Some like danglers I too when camping, but around town I like my outer shirt to fully cover knife an pistol. Thanks Bryan for another great video.

    Brian,
I purchased one of these knives after watching your review. I love it! It has become my daily carry fixed blade. It sits low on my belt and doesn’t dig into my side. Very comfortable to hold. Thanks for the review!

BIG thumbs up!!!! I really LOVE this knife. Old school cool! And Iron Wood is native to southern Arizona where I live and it's harder and even more dense that Mesquite Wood, and that's saying something!! I have two custom made leather sheaths and indeed over time they will loosen up some. However the fix is simple. Take the empty sheath, soak in water for a few minutes and place it out in direct sun light for a few hours. It will shrink up and when when you re-insert the knife, the sheath will once again be very tight fitting. Thanks Bryan.

I bought one of these at Tractor Supply a year or so ago and it is one of my favorite knives. It feels good in the hand and is great for small tasks around the camp. The steel isn't great but it is more than adequate for the size of the knife and what it should it be used for. I have yet to roll an edge or chip it. I paid less than $20 (on sale) for it and it is worth every penny and then some.

I bought this knife after viewing the video. I was very impressed by the appearance of the wood handle in the video. When I received the knife I was additionally impressed with the finishing quality. Overall if the blade was about and inch longer I wouldn't hate it but I love the knife. BTW..the sheath is really nice and well made and smells like a brand new pair of leather shoes

one of the reasons to put a short "lanyard" on a knife like that is the deep carry leather sheath... it makes it easier to pull out. as always, YMMV but I put short lanyards on all my smaller knives that I make leather sheaths for.

That's a great deal, no doubt. Some may balk when they hear "7Cr13", but all it means is .7% carbon and 13% chromium (.5% + means high carbon, and 13% + means stainless). This isn't the greatest knife steel, but it will get the job done, and will hold it's edge long enough for 99% of us. I think that if you try it, you will be satisfied with the performance. The sheath itself is worth at least $20. Have a sheath made and see how much it costs you. Oh, I almost forgot: Brian, there is some roadkill in front of my house. I could mail it to you if you want to skin it. It's a raccoon, so you could make yourself a cap! Just let me know. LOL

I have mine now and does not disappoint. I do however wish the blade was 4 inches long. Blade shaved hair off the arm right out of the box. I do feel that the sheath will loosen up and the knife will fall out. I will probably modify the sheath and put a snap on it at some point. Are there other sheath options for this? Thanks for the tip and this is probably going to be the knife I carry to the woods most of the time.

Ok, it's a very good, functional, solid, useful, and cool looking knife... But how much it does cost?

I wish Taylor brands would have a premium usa made Schrade line.

Looks like another home run from Schrade. Still like to romanticize about $200-$300 dollar knives but, a good performing quality knife under $50 bucks is hard to pass up.

Too bad that Amazon.ca (Canada for those who are wondering) does not have the PHW in any form, only Old Timers it has is the Deerslayer fixed blade, the Sharpfinger fixed, and the Cave Bear 5 inch lockback. They are all nice, but how is this Canadian going to get that really nice PHW? That's rhetorical, I don't expect you to find it for me. I am just lamenting how much harder it is to get good knives in Canada.

It is a nice functional knife and attractive as you say.
For $21 you can get a cold steel Bushman which in my view has greater utility. Attractive? Wood scales? urm. Did I mention that in my view it has greater utility? 8^)

+Frank Heinrich There are so many great modes to choose from so many brands. "Budget" is so relative but here are a few I like (these are links to the videos I did on each knife. Hopefully that helps):
      Schrade SCH109: th-cam.com/video/dWBZyCLNmms/w-d-xo.html
      Gerber Gator: th-cam.com/video/8TPLdNCfJO0/w-d-xo.html
      Opinel No 9: th-cam.com/video/NCoAKIUHhqg/w-d-xo.html
      Buck 110: th-cam.com/video/IqGElOTdfHk/w-d-xo.html
Swiss Army One Hand Trekker; th-cam.com/video/SznexVW9-EI/w-d-xo.html
These are just some knives I'm familiar with and like. There are lots of other great choices. You can check out my Folding Knives playlist to see all the folders I have reviewed so far.

+Brooks Ashbrook ope, that's just an iMovie sound track. I always try to put a copyright notice on screen if it's me. And only play original music so TH-cam doesn't get all bent out of shape over copyright violations.
