    I bought a 36 after watching your vid. When I got it the firerod was missing. So I called Schrade and talked to this really nice person in customer service. She said she would send me the rod and took my address. When it showed up there were two rods in the pkg and a t-shirt in my size. What a stellar company with stellar products and customer consideration.

    I was very impressed when I received the SCHF55 which for those who are not familiar with that model is a smaller version of the SCHF42. Soon as I saw it and picked it up I was extremely happy that I bought it and felt reassured I made a good choice. You, and several other reviewer's were all right on this one.
    Even though I own a lot of Schrades, these knives really stand out.

    I had to send my first SCHF42 back because the grind was horrible - one side was ground, the other side not. The dealer exchanged it with no problems, and the replacement was fine. It did need some honing on the ceramic rod. All in all, I am satisfied, it does everything I want it to and it is really comfortable in the hand.

    Brother, you are so right, baton with the knife, show the people how it's done, and do your own thing as you see fit. No, there is no need to baton wood in every situation but it is good to practice and know how before the time may come that you have to, in a survival situation and you either lost or don't have a hatchet processing wood is very important to help keep you alive and I say to Hades to the people who cuss you and put you down for batoning wood, if the time ever comes and they are trapped in the wilderness with nothing but a knife I think they would baton wood in a heartbeat. I am a subscriber to your channel and I have learned a lot watching your videos, you showcase fine tools and give good sound advice. Keep them coming and I'll keep watching. Later bro

    Your feather stick skills are kind of amazing. I've binge watched a lot of your videos and almost everytime you say "this isn't the best wood for feather sticking" and then you proceed to make a great feather stick. Granted I'm not a scout so my perspective of feather stick skills is skewed but still, impressive.

    This is the knife I've been waiting for! A simple, effective, high value all around with a real handle you can grab onto. NO BS worthless custom features that are useless/valueless. My BK 15 handle is way too small/thin and never gave a secure grip. Love that crovan though. And I'm a leather guy. Should receive mine next week. Good job!

    I have a suggestion for you when you talk to the schrade company ask if they can make a knife in this style but with a convex grind. The convex grind seems to perform better at camp and bushcraft chores and processing larger game animals and I think that a knife of this design with a convex grind would be a awesome knife

    A tip for your viewers about the 42. I found the grip to be too slick for my hand. I put a strip of Talon Grip tape around it between and nearly to each screw. I used a hairdryer to form fit the tape and now the 42 feels 100% to me.

    Just got the non-recurve version, last week. This is my favourite fulltang, now. I liked the Becker BK16, but the handle was too small for my liking. This knife is very similar, but the handle is very generous. I stippled it with a soldering iron & it's now grippy enough. I think Schrade hit it out of the park. Best part, it was CDN$55!

    You guys are killing me with this one.
    You know I wonder if they are shipping with the leather sheath. I saw the knife on Amazon and I think they advertised it with a nylon sheath.

    • @Atro785
      @Atro785 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      It should be coming with the leather sheath. If it's not I'd be skeptical of the seller. I personally usually wait til the main inventory hits and I see the word "Prime" attached to it so I know it's legit and fulfilled by Amazon so if I have any issues they'll take care of it. Just be cautious and you should be fine.

I know this is kind of an older vid but I was wondering if you have heard anything about a non recurve version of this knife coming out? I would prefer a non recurve but I wouldn't mind either way since it is a great knife. Regardless I appreciate all the great gear and informative vids! Your reviews have turned me on to a lot of great gear just need to get around to buying it all lol. I like it a lot and want one. I agree with those who say it's the best Schrade yet. It has great proportions and I could find a way to deal with the recurve. And I'm not a sheath snob. As far as I can tell it's fine. As long as all or most of the handle rides below the belt it's workable.

    Brian - another great video. I am quickly becoming a big fan of your videos in a short time of discovering your channel. It's refreshing to see someone still getting excited about a knife (as I do :-)) Really liking this SCHF42 - definitely on my hit list, and I am not a big outdoors guy. I have the SCHF26, how would you compare if you have used that one as well, do you still like this one better? Love the look of this one - Brian Griffin did a great job. Almost looks like something Mr. Onion would have put out (big fans of his stuff).

  • @gierhedd75

    Nice review, sir. Just two questions:
    1) Did you do any touch up to the blade before putting it through its paces?
    2) What are your thoughts on coated blades( which seems to me at least to be a trend nowadays)?

    • @SurvivalOnPurpose
      @SurvivalOnPurpose  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Johnny I. 1) Straight out of the box 2) I don't really like most of the coatings, especially the really rough ones. I don't so much mind the smooth ones. This is probably the best coating Schrade uses.

    Hi, Bryan. Everyone really seems to like this new 42. That being said, are there any aspects of this knife that you feel could be transferred to the 9 or 36/37 that would improve them to this level. And if so, could that ever happen? Great video, thanks.

    • @SurvivalOnPurpose
      @SurvivalOnPurpose  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jamie Hitt It's hard to say because they are all three a little bigger knives. It's kind of like comparing guitars. A Les Paul and a Stratocaster are very different but both are wonderful ;-)

    Thanks for this review, and all your other ones as well. I thought your idea for the "fat wood" handle on your fero rod was excellent. Keep up the good work.

    Grivory: Polyphthalamide (aka. PPA, High Performance Polyamide) is a thermoplastic synthetic resin of the polyamide(nylon) family that is used to replace metals in high temperature automotive applications, as the housing for high temperature electrical connectors and multiple other uses. It has found a degree of favor for use in cutlery. PPA’s are polyamides containing aromatic rings in their backbones, which gives them high mechanical strength and thermal resistance.[1]
    The term PPA is used when 60% or more moles of the carboxylic acid portion of the repeating unit in the polymer chain is composed of a combination of terephthalic (TPA) and isophthalic (IPA) acids.[2] As a member of the nylon family, it is a semi-crystalline material composed from a diacid and a diamine which means PPA is formed by the reaction of aromatic acids with aliphatic diamines. However, the diacid portion contains at least 55% terephthalic acid (TPA) orisophthalic acid (IPA).[3] TPA or IPA are aromatic components which serve to raise the melting point, glass transition temperature and generally improve chemical resistance vs. standard aliphatic nylon polymers and reduce water absorption.[4] If more than 55% of the acid part of a PPA is made out of IPA, then the copolymer is amorphous
    In recent years, polyphthalamides have been commercialized by several polymer resin manufacturers which are under the trade names Amodel, Grivory, Ultramid T, VESTAMID HTplus, Akromid T and Zytel(r) HTN

    I'm curious, after seeing you throw so many Schrade knives--will they replace a knife that's been thrown, if it breaks?

    • @SurvivalOnPurpose
      @SurvivalOnPurpose  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +CSharp you would have to ask them but I would not blame them if they said no. If I decide to throw a knife I do so with the knowledge that it is not the intended use. Unless it is really a throwing knife. Some makers specifically exclude throwing damage from their warranty.

    I have a 4 inch BK16 when I was out on my 4 hr. Fire Challenge I notice it was a little short for the wood i was trying to process. So I'm looking for some suggestions for a survival blade that would be over 7 inches and under 100 dollars?

    • @SurvivalOnPurpose
      @SurvivalOnPurpose  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tactical Nooby I really like my Schrade SCHF37M. It has a 7" blade of 8Cr13Mov stainless and micarta handles. There is also a 1095 carbon steel version with TPR handles.Both are at or under $50 and they have performed very well for me. I did strip the coating. Here's my initial reviews of each if you want to take a look: th-cam.com/video/74YMZIAcGtQ/w-d-xo.html and th-cam.com/video/_mwjacNh54k/w-d-xo.html
      And here are a couple of shameless Amazon links that support the channel if you like shopping on Amazon:

    Hi, would you recommend this over the schf10 or 36?
    And which Schrade knife is the best for beginners

    • @SurvivalOnPurpose
      @SurvivalOnPurpose  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      SesSkater I hesitate to "recommend" anything because everyone has different tastes and abilities. Same goes for the "which knife is best" questions. I will say that I think the SCHF42 is one of my favorite Schrade knives and would be an excellent choice for someone at any skill level, especially a beginner. It is a little easier to control. The 36 is probably a little beefier, as is the 10.

      +Survival On Purpose that does it, I just wish the 42 had micarta handles. I might just make it my main knife and upgrade it bit by bit. If I do get this, is the bk7 a good pick for a larger knife?

    Hi,
    Love the videos, I like it that you told the length of the knife in cm. I like the knife overall but I don't like the idea of it no having any guard. But I am hesitating between this knife and the SCHF51. Please tell me your advice it would be very important to me.

    • @SurvivalOnPurpose
      @SurvivalOnPurpose  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +JD MD They are both great knives, in my opinion. The 51 is a lot thicker, heavier and beefier. If you want an all purpose, survival knife it wold be a good choice. On the other hand, if you prefer a more nimble knife better suited for fine tasks as well as most camp chores, the 42 might be a better choice. In the end it is all about what you want the knife for.

    • @jdmd1918
      @jdmd1918 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ooh thank you. I understand much more now the use of those knifes thanks to your reply. I think I am going to choose the SCHF51 because it is a all around knife and maybe for next Christmas I will get the SCHF42:). Thanks for the feedback, very quick too. I wish you the best of luck!

    • @SurvivalOnPurpose
      @SurvivalOnPurpose  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +TheScottyp1 I used spray in stripper from Walmart (Kleen Strip maybe?) to remove the coating from an SCHF37. It is not the same coating but it should work. Just be careful. It is pretty volatile stuff.

    • @TheScottyp1
      @TheScottyp1 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Survival On Purpose yea I just used that on my schf16....got the coating off and it was sandblasted underneath.....the knife started to rust in 2 days. I had to wet sand the blade and polish with some elbow grease to get rid of that sandblasted finish and hopefully the rust issue...thought 9cr18mov was highly rust resistant.....makes me wonder if BTI tools changed the steal without telling anyone

  • @paulie4x1
    @paulie4x1 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    By the way, Brian, the Becker BK's use Grivory for their handle material, I really like it. Cold Steel also used it on some of the older folders, But some companies call it by the generic Dupont name, but alot if knives use it for knife handles, I even think my Potbelly, Parangatang, Swabbie and Zomstro are made out of the so called Grivory under the generic name (Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic) ?, though. ,,, ,,, ,,

      Look forward to your response. Been watching your reviews on the schrade line ups and would like to buy this one but unfortunately no one where I live carries them. So I'm stuck with buying online. Hate doing that as I like to feel a knife before I decide to drop my cash on it. With that said, I am ordering the schrade axe. Watched your review and I was sold. Thanks.

    • @SurvivalOnPurpose
      @SurvivalOnPurpose  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      The small version of the axe was the most popular tool with my Boy Scouts this weekend. They would rather chop than saw ;-)
      And the handles did fine on the SCHF42 in the rain. Well, not totally in the rain, but in between rain sessions.

    Bryan;
    Don't let the people who hate batoning with a knife bother you. I would like to see ANYONE split a two inch limb into 4 or 8 sections with an Axe.
    There are only two things I would change with the SCHF42.
    1. Get rid of the recurve so the knife could be sharpened in the bush.
    2. Get rid of the full flat grind in favor of the Scandi, Saber, or Convex grinds.
    A FFG is the weakest and most fragile of all the grinds.
    My favorite grinds are SCANDI or Saber. Convex can be difficult to sharpen in the bush.

    • @SurvivalOnPurpose
      @SurvivalOnPurpose  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      MatoNupai I use a diamond rod to sharpen recurves and it works pretty good. I know a lot of folks don;t like them because you can't use a stone. I also know a LOT of folks like full flat grinds. Everything has pros and cons.
