Gooooood Evening Al , Gina & Olivia , I remember my days of warming up at a open fire during the winter. First the front side is nice and warm while the back side is icy cold. So you turn to warm the backside and your front side becomes cold. lol And there you go , constantly turning so that you become evenly toasted. And no matter where you stand , the smoke will always follow you. You need an enclosed place that will contain the heat. Far more effective than an open fire. A small pot bellied stove would work nicely in the shed/outhouse. I'm undecided between a large wall tent and a yurt for temporary housing. I know that large wall tents are commonly used for elk hunting camps. And now , firearms for bears ? Bears typically avoid humans unless there is food to attract them. Keep your garbage cleaned up and there should not be much of a problem with bears. Of course , they will smell your cooking. Keeping that in mind , perhaps an effective rifle or hand gun is in order. What a life adventure !
Good morning, drat I misspelled the word Merning (hard to get things right) I have developed a real appreciation for you and others who read the comments and reply to their viewers I have just finished reading and giving the commenters my thumbs up and giving your responses thumbs up 👍 as well. I thought you deserved more thumbs up for all the effort that you put out for us your loyal subscribers and that they deserved their thumbs up too. Thank you 😊
Not much you can do on the land over winter so take the time to build your spot around the fire, do a picnic table some sort of over head shelter, a wooden table to prepare stuff. some chairs to sit around fire when it is lunch or break time, also some sort of firewood cover. After a while with that set up you will feel like you are coming home. When we did winter day camping up in the Northwest Territories the first thing we did upon arriving was put up an overhead tarp it protected us from the sun, rain and snow. I would like to see where the rest of that road goes so take us on another tour. Fix that muddy spot on the road throw in some gravel, clear up beside the road for the big trucks later on they need clearance. Have you picked an area where your house will go? Enjoyed the morning fire and the creation of the fire pit, looks great. Morning to you and all the Lumnah fans.
Regarding the fire pit, there comes a time when being a perfectionist is more of a curse than a blessing. I'm 62 years old and it's taken me until recently to figure out that sometimes being "close" is good enough. Especially when it won't affect the functionality or overall quality of the project. I still always strive to do my very best, but don't sweat the small stuff anymore. It was a hard lesson to learn, but did take away some stress and anxiety in my life. Just a tidbit from an old guy who still grapples with this today. Take care of yourself. P. S. I've watched and enjoy all your videos since the beginning. Keep at it, thanks!
A very good point. One many of us would benefit from if we took it to heart. We don't have to get everything PERFECT all the time. "Close enough" is just fine for the majority of things. Now SOME things need to be spot on, like using a torque wrench on head bolts in a certain pattern to properly tighten down a engine cylinder head...
This is a nice point, well taken for the average soul, but some people are more stressed when leaving something not quite perfect, than they are spending the effort to perfect something. Live and let live. I know you mean well.
Note to Gina........ while watching this and admiring your new property and your daughter Olivia's growth, and your happy husband busy building his fire pit, I couldn't help but see the similarity in the building of the pit brick by brick and the building of your successful family life. Proverbs 14:1 comes to mind Gina. Love you guys! God's blessing on you all!
Why don't you take the goat bus stop to use as a wind break and shelter. The goats do not seem to use it and it would look nice at the property. I think your little trailer would handle it or with some work it may go into your pickup if it is not to high.
When we got our new property the first year before we started building we had Christmas dinner around the campfire. We roasted brats, put a kettle of hot apple cider on and stuck a can of beans in the coals. We sat around the warmth of the fire pit and snow fluttered down around us. Even though it was a very simple meal, it was one of my favorite Christmas dinners. Than ice skating on the pond with head lamps. Sometimes simple is spectacular

Probably a project for spring, but start planning out your first silvopasture. Electric fencing, Gates, water lines and pigs and goats to build Good soil for your cattle herd or horses. Love the building and cooking.

I just recently ran across your channel and have to say that your new land is almost my perfect piece of land. I’m 63 and can’t deal with the cold like I did as a kid. We used to have a cabin in the woods in Wisconsin and when my dad would ‘play’ with the beaver dams it was our job to use clippers and cut up the littler branches. Made it easy for him to remove parts of the dam and the beavers wouldn’t use our little sticks. I know the misses doesn’t like the idea of eating them but can you make bone broth from them. Any chance of making beaver jerky as a way to preserves some. Great forest snack. Great videos and thank you so much for sharing!

Glad to hear you guys are going to incorporate a grill on the fire pit. Lots of memories there just waiting to be had. Great job on sizing those bricks Al!
For future reference ..Now that you're done... get a fiber blade for your cordless saw.. score the outside.. If you do as much as we do it's worth buying a diamond blade. We have a little wooden box with a hardened steel edge, Score it, lay it with the cut at the edge with the waste hanging off and a good solid whack.
Watching Gina put the green beans in the pot brought back memories of my grandfathers victory garden in our backyard and the taste of vine fresh beans and tomatoes and carrots fresh out of the soil. Living healthy in the Lord.
Mornin! 31 deg here this morning. Hope it warms up a bit as I have work to do in a unheated shop. Tomorrow is warming up more so I can get the outside work done. Hope everyone is healthy and happy! Big hugs from Perth Ontario Canada.
This is so interesting. Not a fan of trapping but that’s just my soft side talking not a criticism of you. I am interested in your outdoor biffy building. That pond is so pretty. Will make a terrific skating area come winter. Like a curriers and Ives painting.
Your Out-House could be a Dear Blind too! Or emergency shelter. Flip it over and insulate the floor. Use a store bought entry door (3ft), Will need a 1-3/4" piece of hardwood with a 1/2" radius on one corner since it will wear anyways. Great Masonry work. You really need a landscapers rake, the width will help out alot getting an even, flat and level pad. See ya tomorrow.
How about getting Olivia a book on local wildlife (plants and animals) so she can begin to identify species on your new property? There are also books on becoming a naturalist, creating a nature journal, drawing nature, etc. I'd love to see her develop a love for the outdoors and all it has to offer.
@@samvalentine3206 She is!!!! And I am sure that we will see her work later when her fingers will not be so cold :-) :-)

I spent most of my childhood studying the natural world. My parents got me the microscope 🔬 I asked for one Christmas... from then on, I was studying the life in ponds and the river on the farm we lived on. Natural science is fascinating, you just need to nurture an interest in it.
Yep! Gina married a trapper!!! This video just came up again. I’ll watch it again. There’s nothing you all can’t do together! Simply AWESOME! There’s something satisfying about seeing you trap those beavers, knowing that’s one more beaver that won’t be damming up the water. You get ‘em Al! Have an amazing day on the homestead. Ps: loved seeing the new piggies, chicks, and baby turkeys. Not to mention the new baby goat!
Sandra Westley I was getting really worried when there was no video yesterday, I must be really addicted to your program, I though the beaver had attached you, but here you are today, all ok thank goodness. Had to start watching your old vlogs just to get my daily dose of Lumnah Acres. Keep up the good work really enjoy your vlogs each and every one.
As a new fan of your channel, I think it would be great to see a video about all the progress or projects you guy have finish on your property whether it's a kind of timelapse like you have for the goats barn or a video complication. Especially with working starting on your new property, I'd be excited to all you've accomplished so far on your old property.
Good Morning Al, Gina and Olivia ! Our temperature here in SW Missouri in a balmy 63 degrees this morning @ 10:00 am. Your fire pit looks Great, it reminds me of a comfortable overstuffed chair, will be a lot of memories made there
Good morning y’all! May I suggest a large sheet of steel across your firepit to cook on. In the South we’d use it for oyster roasts, or Brunswick stew pots. Agree with care around bears. Keep truck close, doors unlocked. A dog is another good suggestion, even just to bark a warning.
Years ago we made a similar fire pit but with cinderblocks. IIRC sides were 3 blocks high with a 4th set just above grade. Once done we pounded lengths of rebar along the outside to prevent critters from pushing them out. We saw signs of critters laying in the pit but never damage to it. We sold the property years ago. Would be fun to see if the pit still exists.
better yet do what we did a small charge and rid yourself of the whole dam then a controlled fire around the pond and get rid of the brush they are reusing to rebuild you will never get them one at a time they live in families and have large litters
I used to fish some beaver ponds north of Palmer, Alaska back in the mid 60's. There are also some spring fed lakes in the area. I found the meat of the fish was a bit mushy, and it had a musky taste. Because there is no current in the water, they do not get the exercise that a brook or stream caught trout do. Edible, but certainly not the best. I love your little "Beaver Acres" spot you've got. Lots of work, but you guys don't seem to shy away from that at all.
Congrats on the beaver catch! And now at that beautiful lake, fire pit is looking good.. BUT your lacking something very important .. a fishing dock! Built in bench’s and a rod holder.. lol well it would be nice ....
Give him some time to finish what he has already started . I am sure that Al will have MANY projects on this new property :-) :-) Fishing dock sounds very good ! :-)
@@kenberscheit948 , That is not true. Nature will often stock a pond or lake. One of the ways that it works is that water birds can pick up fish eggs on their feet then go to a different pond depositing the fish eggs to grow in the new pond. Of course they may not be the kinds of fish that you want. By the way , for a person from California , that is considered to be a lake. A good sized lake at that .
@@kenberscheit948 lol, no biggie to me I am a old fart who just likes the excuse of “ fishing” in the early mornings while sipping coffee and watching the world wake up..
Al, I know you said it was "a couple years" temporary but, if you want it to stay together until then, you may want to use a bead of construction adhesive just on the top row. that will bond it to the second row and keep everything together.
I worked a large private ranch (house manager) in Texas and you remind me of the owner. If I had that property I would build an old church house that can be seasonally decorated. 200 sqft is all. Peaceful place beside a creek with an old steeple. There we had one on the 100k acres so there were lots of projects and cool places. Also a walking or running trail that can be a mile long with small destinations along the way. Love your show.
Do you need any openings on the bottom for a draft for the fire! Won't it be smokey otherwise? Just asking cause I always see holes in any burning vessel. God Bless!
Wood stove for your potty cabin. Enclose the potty like a closet. Rest of cabin warming hut. As others warned, bring large hand gun for large animal defense. 👍😷🇺🇸🐾🐾🐔🐓
Have you thought of putting up a yurt for right now for warmth, an escape from rain if it suddenly appears and how will you get back to that area when all the snow comes, snow plow on your truck? Has Olivia ever milked a goat? Lilly Rhoades milks the cows by hand....it’d be a good chore for her to teach her responsibility if you’re going to have that large farm to homestead the more helping hands the more gets done quickly.....
True Homesteaders know how to improvise. Broom and stonecutter by Mr. Lumnah. Love your videos. I am building a homestead through you. Love that you are so positive to each other and your animals. Makes my day. Thanks Loads, for sharing.
Good Afternoon Al, Gina & Sweet Olivia! I watch every day & I love your family trip to get eggs!! 🐣 Your new property is a gift from God. It is Gorgeous!🏕 My suggestion for a name is Evergreen Haven. The road is lined with many kinds of pines & so is the pond. It is a Beautiful place for you have fun. God Bless you all in a special way. Your Maine Neighbor, Bonnie Lounsbury
You should use landscaping construction glue they use for retaining walls and just mortar the seams with a bag they sell that looks like a pastry decorator bag
I was noticing the sounds in the background trying to figure out what it was...duh...the running stream. Was so soothing!!! I could take a nap at Lumnah Fields.
proper tools, Al the pioneers didn't have any fancy tools, so you are doing exactly what they did and it is turning out great. It may take a little longer but that's okay you're not on a real tight schedule.
After I make a huge crock pot of chili beans.. we have so much left over !.. I bake potatoes the next day and pour left over chili beans on top and garnish with grated cheddar sharp cheese sliced mushrooms , and chives .. topped with sour cream ! Hubby loves it !! and so do I ...
I think a 3 sided lean to type cover that could be close to fire pit or slide around to where you be working so get out rain or snow and possibly protect what items you may leave behind so not have to transport back forth
Yes. The castor oil can be used on the traps. It makes good lure. To late in the season for bears but they love the scent. Bottle it up for future use.
Chicken and gravy over rice. Total fav. In fact, I love it so much I can the chicken and broth together, to thicken and dump over rice. Makes it fast food!
Did you get male or female beavers, and can you tell how old they are? you should set more traps so you can get them all before spring. I'll bet there is more than 8 beavers in that whole creek system. Good luck with them.
I’d like to see you making trails to each corner of your property. A forestry chipper machine would be the way to go. Spring would be a good time to start that project.
Al don't quote me on this but from what remember if you hold the brick up in your hand and get you a pick hammer it will crack easier instead of bouncing against the ground!
Take the Bus Shelter to the 500. Sit in shelter and enjoy it, whats so difficult about that? The goats do not appear to need it and Olivia is home schooling
Watch the video where they built it. It is on heavy timber skids. I suppose if Al owned a crane or if he was the "incredible hulk", it would be easy. Things are always easy when you don't have to do them yourself.
Instead of criticizing Al for doing things differently from what you “would do” why don’t you get out and actually try to accomplish half the things this man has done? Because my bet is, you wouldn’t be able to. Then all of the “would do”s are worthless. 🤷♀️
@@alexachen996 I think that people are getting so involved that they forget that this IS LUMNAH's place, property, project, plan, future , way of doing things. But thank you for reminding them :-) :-) :-) :-)

What's up with this 500 acres? Haven't watched in a little while. My two-acre micro Homestead was too small so I bought a 5-acre and a 14-acre Wilderness Area thinking I have plenty of land now and you went out and bought 500 Acres! It's not a competition Al.
If you want to grow/raise ALL your own food, you need at least 100 -300 acres. You need woodlots and pastures so you dont have to buy feed from a store.
Fire pit is looking good. Your going to have to fill a cooler with water so you'll have plenty for Hot Chocolate. This is going to be an exciting winter. Although I guess there will be a point where the snow is too deep and the weather too cold to be working out there in the "woodlands." Y;all watch for the bear(s) and have a Blessed day.
Build a large outdoor kitchen like Shawn James but bigger and you could move a picnic table under if it was raining and the pizza oven off to the side and wood shed

I always have a broom in my truck this time of year. Other people call it a snow brush. However I like your alternative.
For future reference ..Now that you're done... get a fiber blade for your cordless saw.. score the outside.. If you do as much as we do it's worth buying a diamond blade. We have a little wooden box with a hardened steel edge, Score it, lay it with the cut at the edge with the waste hanging off and a good solid whack.
love how she just stands there. wait till she gets older and wants everything given to her. AT LEAST PICK UP A STONE!
Totally enjoy watching yous start one step at a time to ready your new land. Looks so peaceful
It's 9 degree's over here in England just love following what you guys do.
Michael Sinn - Better state 9 Celsius as most Americans would think you are talking about 9 F!!!!!!
Michael, and Tony, it’s going to be a balmy 10 oC, 46 oF in Nova Scotia today. 😁
💓It’s crazy weather here in the Uk 🇬🇧Suns shining blue sky & it’s cold & raining💓
Crazy hot here in France as well....15°C/59°F
Was 70 here in Texas.
Watching Gina put the green beans in the pot brought back memories of my grandfathers victory garden in our backyard and the taste of vine fresh beans and tomatoes and carrots fresh out of the soil. Living healthy in the Lord.
Olivia grins then nods in agreement at her dad's beaver barbecue idea🤣Gina's amusement is just adorable!
If Olivia is talented in drawing, she could keep a notebook on the flora she finds - like Darwin! 🖖
I sent the Lumnahs 2 books like that 2 winters ago.
EXCELLENT IDEA
They do not post videos on Wednesdays
Sandra Westley thanks for that, work out the abbreviations, thanks but I’m not on either of those.
As a new fan of your channel, I think it would be great to see a video about all the progress or projects you guy have finish on your property whether it's a kind of timelapse like you have for the goats barn or a video complication. Especially with working starting on your new property, I'd be excited to all you've accomplished so far on your old property.
Good morning Al,Gina and Olivia. Looking forward to another beaver. Seem there's a lot more
Good Morning Al, Gina and Olivia ! Our temperature here in SW Missouri in a balmy 63 degrees this morning @ 10:00 am. Your fire pit looks Great, it reminds me of a comfortable overstuffed chair, will be a lot of memories made there
Tell Gina a cookbook would be awesome with her recipes. And fire pit looks great
Good morning y’all! May I suggest a large sheet of steel across your firepit to cook on. In the South we’d use it for oyster roasts, or Brunswick stew pots. Agree with care around bears. Keep truck close, doors unlocked. A dog is another good suggestion, even just to bark a warning.
Good morning Lumnah's! A covered area for a picnic table would be nice by the fireplace. So you can sit and have coco after skating.
i was thinking the goat stop building as they dont seem to use it
@@scottbennett6494 that would be a nice temporary shelter.
Instead of using the rake to remove the branches, try using a 4 prong cultivator.
Red diesel and fertilizer removes beaver dams, and leaves a nice pond behind. (Observe all applicable safety and legal restrictions.)
better yet do what we did a small charge and rid yourself of the whole dam then a controlled fire around the pond and get rid of the brush they are reusing to rebuild you will never get them one at a time they live in families and have large litters
@@alanviner3711 That is what the diesel and fertilizer is for
beaverdeceivers.com
I agree...about the 4 pronged cultivator
it is a pond ,not a lake ,maybe a minnow trap, but no fish in this water, unless you stock it
@@kenberscheit948 ,
That is not true.
“I Like That” has been a key phrase and should be put on hats, shirts and mugs! Hell, trade mark it!!!!!!
“New Yolk City..I like it”
I like it 😁
Great idea James......
He always says “ I like it “.
Good morning everyone! Another great day in the making 😃👍🏾👍🏾👏🏾👏🏾🐈🐔🐶🐐🦫😸
Gooood morning
You pick the best music for your video s .
Do you need any openings on the bottom for a draft for the fire! Won't it be smokey otherwise? Just asking cause I always see holes in any burning vessel. God Bless!
You two amaze me, all you do and are always together working together ❤. I keep get excited about the things happening God bless you
Wood stove for your potty cabin. Enclose the potty like a closet. Rest of cabin warming hut. As others warned, bring large hand gun for large animal defense. 👍😷🇺🇸🐾🐾🐔🐓
.357 would be a good start.
Maybe a little buddy heater so it can just be turned on and off.
@@samvalentine3206 With Buffalo Bore bear loads
Looks looks you have an abundance of wildlife to feed your family . Cannot wait to see you develop this property . Lumnah 500 !!!
Dude......it’s a fire pit............that perfection for everything is going to wear you out sooner.
When he started cutting the stones my OCD detector went off.
So sweet to hear Gina compliment you.
Olivia is doing so much on the farm already... :-) :-) :-)
He developed a milking machine.
@@merange1
So that’s even easier.....
@@merange1 ,
There is no electric power yet up in the boonies. This would be a good opportunity to develop a solar / wind power source.
True Homesteaders know how to improvise. Broom and stonecutter by Mr. Lumnah. Love your videos. I am building a homestead through you. Love that you are so positive to each other and your animals. Makes my day. Thanks Loads, for sharing.
That is a beautiful reflection at the pond
12:24 and you can see the mists waft over the water surface in the fast-motion video... very cool!
Love this guy. He is easy going. Loves life and has a special family.
Goood morning this morning from the MS gulf coast I hope everyone has a warm day lol

Temporary structure. By adding construction glue you make the pavers almost impossible to reuse.
Sounds so yummy:)
Morning from Ga. Tks for sharing your lives with us! Still think u need a sawmill!
You guys in GA get that recount done right
They're going to need more that what they have at their homestead to take care of this place.
I think a 3 sided lean to type cover that could be close to fire pit or slide around to where you be working so get out rain or snow and possibly protect what items you may leave behind so not have
to transport back forth
Definitely make sure the castor glands are removed before cooking the beaver.
I wonder if he did that last time he must have the beaver seemed to be ok
There a special hammer called a brick hammer that you use the end opposite of the head
I use a trowel.
The basement is the coolest place in the house in the summer and the warmest place in the winter! lol
@@deugeneb1698 well said! Thank you for explanation and i LOVE that last sentence!!!! :-)
@@onababona6101 true. It is a heavy beast.

Good Morning Lumnahs.!! Hopping 18 degrees here on the frozen tundra of central ma

What's up with this 500 acres? Haven't watched in a little while. My two-acre micro Homestead was too small so I bought a 5-acre and a 14-acre Wilderness Area thinking I have plenty of land now and you went out and bought 500 Acres! It's not a competition Al.
@ David Allen ,
So , why do you think that you are competing with Al ?
No body can compete with Al
And he’s just loving life Could you imagine if he did compete! Ha Not in his DNA.
