Martin Short said in an interview with Seth Meyers many years later that a makeup artist on SNL was the inspiration for this character. He would sit down for makeup and say he looked a little pale and she'd say "I know that! I'm a makeup artist! You think I don't know that?" She was also a chain smoker. Short put a steel pin in his cigarette so the ashes wouldn't fall off. He claimed a drunk staffer finally told the makeup artist at a Christmas party that the character was based on her. Short said he told her "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery" and she said "I know that! You think I don't know that?"
This guy came up with characters like nobody else. Thurm, Glick, Jackie Rogers, Jr., Grimley to name a few. Such an affable guy yet such a twisted mind. Brilliant shit.

Although I noticed Jim Belushi sneaking peaks at the cue cards, I liked how they didn't just stand and recite what was written on them. Nobody broke character and Martin Short was able to correct a mistake he almost made without being overly obvious about it. This was good sketch comedy, unlike what we've gotten over the past couple of decades.
@@kev7161yes he did. He said "I'm hamming..." And then continued "no, I know that... I'm hanging up..." He corrected himself as so it wouldn't be as noticeable. And he did a great job, instead of saying hanging right after when you would notice that he fumbled the word.
This is a great example of how SNL had NO IDEA what to do with Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Only for her to gone on and become one of the greatest comedic actors of 1990-2020.
@@DarkManSonian she didn't do much on snl. If you don't like her on seinfeld, then where do you find her funny? Overall, I like her on seinfeld. Over the years she successfully pulled off sweet, sassy, bitchy, sexy.
