With every game Canada got better. I remember watching this game with my family; the whole of Canada was glued to the television for the final. My favourite moment? - Joe Sakic scoring the last goal with Bob Cole's iconic commentary. What a tournament. What a team!
Man I still don’t understand how he was able to think through that play, make that decision, then fake the pass knowing exactly where Kariya was and that the pass was going to connect to him, all within like 1 second at by far the highest level of hockey at that time. Like how
Man I remember watching this live. Was amazing! Joe Sakic had one of the greatest gold medal performances in hockey history.

Gretzkys press statement was one of the biggest and proudest moments in Canadian Hockey. Seeing him stand up for Canadian hockey was a very beautiful thing
Yes sir I ain't no Crosby Fan. But that goal, winning Gold for Canada. Crosbys Goal heard seen Coast to Coast is my 2nd best Hokey moment right behind Ray Bourque Raising Lords Stanley's Cup after a 22 years career. Yes sir I remember that game watching it with my Cuzzin Andrew in his room 2002 Gold Metal Game.Like it was yesterday what a memory
I was pretty young so i don't remember much but just seeing the lineup canada had im very surprised every game other than the semi-final was so close and that Eric Brewer had more points than Lindros and Shanahan
My favorite moment was obviously the coffin ceiling goal by Sakic near the end of the gold medal game, but after to terrible games by Canada to open the tournament, I’ll never forget injured captain Mario Lemieux, after being benched for the 2nd game, waking Canada up by scoring the first 2 goals against the Czechs in game 3.
16:42 My only question. If we lost, would the yes get Looney? What if the Women killed the other teams and won the gold? Would the Exchange rate be a problem? * *What is worth more, the 2002 Gold medal, the Loonie that was at Center Or the the Golden Goal from Vancouver and finally listing his Gold Medal Winning prize, also his Oophee
16:05 You forgot to talk about Eddie the Ego's (Belfour) After playing 0 minutes, but still getting a nice Gold Medal the strap broke and "his" medal fell to the ice. Everyone talks about the Lucky Loonie, (as they should) but don't forget the Loonie with no Luck, Or class. It couldn't happen to a "Nicer" Guy. Good job Canada. I was watching in the A.M. of 1998, while Wayne sat on The bench, Helplessly .... Watching Canadian after Canadian, fail to beat the league's dominator.... Wayne wasn't sitting this time!! Hell No!
The IOC banned professional players, and Soviet players were defined as amateurs. Since all the best Canadian players were in the NHL, the best Canadian players weren't eligible.
The 1950s saw the emergence of the USSR as a hockey power and for decades they were sending their best players to the Olympics while Canada did not, as they were all playing in the NHL. (Credit to the USA, who did break through twice to win gold as an underdog during this 50 year stretch between Canadians. The NHL started sending guys to the Olympics in 1998 but Canada couldn’t pull it off the first go around because they lost to a really good Czech team.
I remember those gms how pissed Gretzky was and he did have every right to be he wasn't with the dirty cheap shots the Canadian players were getting without any penalties being called against the other teams si I was wondering if the refs were going to call the gold medal gm properly and they basically did and then r Canadian boys showed just exactly to the world that Canada was and is still the best country in the world for hockey 🏒 😂!!
5:55 Gretzky likes to whine a lot, eh. When Canada is losing they always play dirty, slashing, croschecking, poking, cheapshots you name it. But that's okay, that's hockey, eh. European teams suffered this treatment from Canadians for decades, but they learned the game. So by the late ninetees they started to give back. And then is the "poor canadians" being the victims, being "hated". No they just got back what they planted along those years with their superiority complex.
Lmaoo you clearly got no clue about hockey in Canada . Guys like Sid do anything they are labeled as cry babies etc a guy like Ovi can take Danny brier from behind on a change no one says a word one of countless cases

The fake out by Super Mario to NOT shoot the puck was master class.

This game was played on my 31st birthday! 🥳
That pass from Pronger through Lemieux‘s skates to Kariya was absolute poetry in motion! 😄💥🎶🎈
I will always remember. I got fired that day and I was able to watch the game
i wish canada would bring back these jerseys. they are classics
Agreed!
SWEATERS!

Joe Sakic Tournament MVP and 4 points in the final!!
Might be a good idea to credit the olympic doc that you pulled a bunch of that front office footage from because it's a really interesting watch.
Good idea! It called Gold Rush 2002. I'll put the link in the description.
Awesome video! Honestly this needs more views! I love how much hockey videos I’ve been seeing on TH-cam recently!
@JimiFargo Thanks!

Sounds like a salty Sabres fan who never won anything 😂
1952 to 2002? Why so many years before canada won gold?
