Yzerman played in this tournament on ONE good knee. As a Wings fan from Detroit, some were giving him flack for playing in the tournament and not resting the knee. After the Olympic break he missed 10 or so games, came back and led that 02' Wings team to a cup. They wouldn't have gotten out of the 1st round against Vancouver with out him, he was unbelievable. The stuff Legends are made of, absolute warrior.

I was an Athlete Driver for the 2002 Winter Olympics. Talking hockey a couple times and having my picture taken with Pat Quinn the Day before Canada Won Gold was the Highlight for me. A true gentleman.
Immigrated to Canada in 2000 and didn't know anything about Ice hockey and I watched every game in this Olympics and the Goosebumps that I got from watching this Canadian team played and win the Gold medal was the feeling I will never forget. Thanks for posting this.
I came to Canada in 99 and our school that day cancelled all classes during the gold medal game, the entire school of student and staff was rounded up in the lunch room for this Canadian heritage moment, I still remember that Kariya goal til this day with that highlight of Mike Richter flying across the net in an attempt to save the shot.
This is one of the best sports documentaries I've ever watched, and I've watched a lot! It takes fans behind the scenes at every step, good and bad, and also gives us a sense of what life is like in the Olympic Village for both families and players. I've watched it multiple times, and I'm sure I'll watch it again. The music, the editing, the direction, every part of it is amazingly well-executed. I hope folks out there are able to find this in 2020, we can all use some stories like this that are so uplifting and show a true triumph of the human spirit over negativity and media attacks. I'm American, and I'm fiercely proud of my country, but... GO CANADA!
I can't believe it was twenty years ago? Where does the time go? As I feel like it was yesterday! But the thrill of that Gold medal game and the players had in their hand, you just knew they weren't going to lose, but it was still very nerve racking! Until the Canadian anthem was being sung by everyone on the arena, and the bar where I watched ,it was so loud you couldn't hear the commentators! and tears ,cheers and hugs to people I didn't even know, but the jubilation was so overwhelming! It was fun. The part I miss the most is retail shopping before online shopping was popular. Having busy retail stores filled with customers made even small towns feel lively. Now it's like every retail store is a ghost town. operated by scared employees who are worried about having to work for a fast food chain again...

Veteran club (average age was 30) with most players captains or alternates on their NHL teams and 27 Stanley Cups between them. In my opinion 2002 was one of the greatest collection of names ever assembled and one of the greatest Team Canadas of all-time.

So Amazing...Fantastic Hockey in 2002. Wayyy better than today's NHL Hockey, IMO. I am still in AWE of that Canadian Team. Even in 2020 during this difficult time with Covid19 being as horrible and frustrating as it is. As I watched this? And believe me, I believe it was completely well-deserved. I detest bullies in hockey (Bertuzzi, Marchand, etc.) I don't care how good they are as hockey players, they are horrible human beings. Once Joe and Jerome got going along with Mario Lemieux brilliance it was over. Sakic was on fire . Remember listening in the car was working with my uncle at the time and we were driving back and the only station we had was in French and that's all we heard was Sakic Sakic . C'est la vie. is the only time we get understand that Canada was winning against the Finland team. Great memories rest in peace uncle Al.
Sakic was an elite players but I can't help but think he was always underrated compared to other players of his era. Not to start any arguments but I always thought he was more dependable than Stevey Y because they both played around the same time. And in my honest opinion, he was always the more consistent player.
This will never get old. Golden. I was 10 years old and I still remember seeing Gretzkys son shooting on Cujo in the warm ups. What an amazing moment in Canadian hockey and just overall history.
Sakic is my favorite player ever, what a clutch player he was ! When I was a kid playing street hockey with my friends, I was always playing as Joe Sakic. When I played NHL on Sega Genesis I was always trying to score all my goals with him and I collected every Sakic hockey cards I could find, I also wore #19 in every sport because of him... xD

This has been a most fascinating look behind the scenes of what goes into choosing Canada's Olympic team. What a class act and high quality leaders. And what can I say about our team. All have great hockey skills and most important of all, Canadian hearts. Need I say more.
I will go on record and say that this was the greatest team ever assembled. Eclipsing the 87 Canada Cup team. Mario, Kariya, Stevie Y, Lindros, Sakic, Fleury, Pronger, Neidermayer, Brodeur. We even had Cujo and Eddie as insurance. This was the greatest 4th line to play the game as well. That line alone combined for 1500+ goals and 3500+ pts. I'm so glad I lived this and relished every moment. I'll never forget for as long as I live. 🇨🇦🇨🇦 I still cry and get massive chills hearing Bob Cole.
Maybe greatest Canadian team ever assembled but not greatest Team. That would go to the 1980-1981 Soviet team, which dominated everyone, including Canada 8-1 and the NHL All Stars 6-0.

I beg to differ, that 87 canada cup team was stacked just as much as this gold medal team, difference I see is that the 87 team had line mates from stanley cup winning teams, the 2002 team didn't. The hockey was better in 87 as well I watched both series thoroughly and both teams are great but the 87 team with Grezt and Mario out do the 2002 team. But in the big picture both teams won !
Being an 11-year-old Swedish kid who loved ice hockey and watching his first Olympics, I remember being so excited after the Sweden - Canada game. Sweden felt unstopable. Then BOOM, knocked out in the quarter final by Belarus. It's still considered by many Swedes to be the biggest tragedy to ever happen within Swedish sports (not including deaths and such of course).
I'm sorry, Erik. I hear you. It was a tragedy, especially considering Belarus then got decimated by Canada, whereas Sweden might have beat Canada. Hockey is like that. Unpredictable. I really do believe, though, the players do their best. I hate the fact that Sweden was so hard on their players after their loss to Belarus. It felt cruel given what these boys were already feeling, but maybe you have a different take? If so, I'd love to hear it. Be well, my fellow hockey fan!
Most people only remember the fluke goal that went in off Salo's head. But I think they underestimated Belarus. The team lost its focus: they started making defensive mistakes, slamming gates, barking at each other. I personally think the turning point in that game was when Belarus scored shorthanded. still I think the funniest comment at the time was an interview the Toronto Sun did with Expressen's Mats Olsson about the fan reaction back home: he revealed that some of the readers calling for the players' passports to be taken away.

I was at Work that day 6am-6pm @ the Hospital ! Thankfully most of the patients were watching that game on tv.Apon delivering the Meals i was able to catch the end! Great game!!
I remember watching this game as a kid in Ontario. My family was all glued to the tv. When the final buzzer went we grabbed our big canada flags and my brother and I ran outside and were waving it up and down the street. People were out cheering and car horns were honking everywhere. I had a bit of a cold so my mom was trying to bring me back inside but we were all just too pumped. My dad drove us downtown and everyone was just celebrating. Flags everywhere, horns going, smiles, and cheers. Was so great. One of my favourite memories.
'72 was amazing. '87 Canada Cup was a dream to watch. 2010 was hockey Gold. But '02 Gold Medal Game was the greatest hockey game I've ever watched... hands down the greatest team Canada has ever put on the ice.🇨🇦🥇🏅🎖🎉
Well if it was the greatest then why did they get hammered by the Swedes 5-2? No way was that the best ever. The '87 team was Canada's best, with both Mario AND Gretzky. But yeah this game was great. The Americans were awesome as well.

They took all the classes out into the Gym at my elementary and we watched it. It was amazing. I’m 33 now. From top to bottom, all class acts on this team. Canadians are the best.

I remember watching these games at school, the principal was a huge hockey guy and allowed every class to watch the games instead of school work. The teachers would roll in a television on a stand and we'd just watch the games.
Most people don't know this, but the ice at Salt Lake was made by a Canadian and he place a loonie at centre ice, it's currently sitting in the Hall of Fame, you're welcome.
roy retired like a year later he had enough. plus roy got the cup a year before and had 3 other rings to have 4 in total. and is considered by many as the goat goalie. i think he's alright.
Can you imagine getting on the ice and facing Mario Lemieux with his size and skill? Six foot four, two hundred and forty pounds and with all that hockey ability? That's NHL quality. Amazing player!
@ The 1:27:40 mark that goal is the straw that broke the camels back. The way Sakic speeds up the ice protects the puck at full tilt in their zone and drops it to Yzerman. Game over that's hockey.

My team is the USA, but if they're out, Canada is my 2nd choice. Gretzky was right, seems like everyone else roots against them, because they're always the best and deepest team top to bottom, front to back. This was a hell of a tournament, and the best team won. Some of my all time favorite players were on the ice in that gold medal game. What an incredible pool of talent.

At the 1 hr 19 min mark Fleury looking off the Sudafed and could use 20 of the red wonders. I bet he celebrated the Gold with a few bumpski's that went into a couple day bender. He wore sunglasses 24/7 and then the tinted shield on the ice. Hockey players are either grounded or a bit insane...more so then and not so much these days. This is a great video that is well put together.
Gretzky's insistence to take the best, regardless of age or reputation was key, and set the tone for modern Canadian international hockey rosters. 2006 was weak, between waves of talent, but 2010 and 2014 were prime examples, with gold medals as an easily predictable result. In the Canada Cup days this was not the case... For instance, 1987, the team had Dineen, Tochhet, C. Lemieux, Propp, and Brent Sutter. All solid players... BUT, they were chosen for reputation, while the more talented and skilled Steve Yzerman, Ron Francis, Brian Trottier, Marcel Dionne, Luc Robataille, Denis Savard, and Dino Ciccarelli were watching on T.V. (all the latter were much hotter at the time than the former). Switch these players and it is not as exciting a final with the Soviets. The Canucks win without the intrigue and stress. Hands down! For 1998 in Nagano, Bobby Clarke named a roster also based on reputation, and not on skill and talent as best suited for big international ice surfaces. So Zamuner, Linden, Stevens, Primeau and Corson were chosen over the obviously better (Wayne method): Murphy, Turgeon, Robataille, Recchi, and Oats. Perhaps Canada would have beaten the Czechs if they could have iced more talent. (Disclaimer, although I was reading the papers and watching at the tie, I do forget the injury status of the above mentioned men.) I'm just talking approach here, of Wayne's (best of now), vs. Keenan and Clarke's approach looking for toughness and chosing biased favourites.
The CC was before the 87 season started. Yzerman didn't even have his first 40 goal or 100 pt season yet. He was a great player but was still relatively young
Remembering both 87 and 02 the only thing I thought made 87 better was the goaltending, Fuhr was better for Canada than either Joseph or Brodeur over the whole tournament run. Though Brodeur got better with each game. Also if I remember correctly Clarke built the 98 to combat the USA who many felt had outmuscled Canada in the 96 world cup. As a result they were slower and less skilled than they should've been. Ironically both the US and Canada fell to the gritty faster Czechs.

@@DARK24-7 I don't disagree with you overall, but in terms of the 2002 Olympics, I feel that Sakic DID get the respect and recognition he deserved. And believe me, I believe it was completely well-deserved. I really like him, not just because he was so good, but also because he was for the most part a very clean player and, as you put it, a gentleman and VERY smart guy. I detest bullies in hockey (Bertuzzi, Marchand, etc.) I don't care how good they are as hockey players, they are horrible human beings. So I think you and I are actually on the same page, and I apologize if I sounded defensive (but not in the good hockey-way)! :) I love Joe Sakic AND Mario Lemieux!

Once Joe and Jerome got going along with Mario Lemieux brilliance it was over. Sakic was on fire . Remember listening in the car was working with my uncle at the time and we were driving back and the only station we had was in French and that's all we heard was Sakic Sakic . C'est la vie. is the only time we get understand that Canada was winning against the Finland team. Great memories rest in peace uncle Al.

Sakic was an elite players but I can't help but think he was always underrated compared to other players of his era.
Not to start any arguments but I always thought he was more dependable than Stevey Y because they both played around the same time. And in my honest opinion, he was always the more consistent player.

Sakic is my favorite player ever, what a clutch player he was ! When I was a kid playing street hockey with my friends, I was always playing as Joe Sakic. When I played NHL on Sega Genesis I was always trying to score all my goals with him and I collected every Sakic hockey cards I could find, I also wore #19 in every sport because of him... xD

Pat Quinn reminds me so much of my Uncle John, when I think back to this Olympics it reminds me of being up in Sudbury for the holidays with the family and good times. Going nuts when we won the Gold! I miss these times a lot…
This has been a most fascinating look behind the scenes of what goes into choosing Canada's Olympic team. What a class act and high quality leaders. And what can I say about our team. All have great hockey skills and most important of all, Canadian hearts. Need I say more.
I will go on record and say that this was the greatest team ever assembled. Eclipsing the 87 Canada Cup team. Mario, Kariya, Stevie Y, Lindros, Sakic, Fleury, Pronger, Neidermayer, Brodeur. We even had Cujo and Eddie as insurance. This was the greatest 4th line to play the game as well. That line alone combined for 1500+ goals and 3500+ pts. I'm so glad I lived this and relished every moment. I'll never forget for as long as I live. 🇨🇦🇨🇦

Maybe greatest Canadian team ever assembled but not greatest Team. That would go to the 1980-1981 Soviet team, which dominated everyone, including Canada 8-1 and the NHL All Stars 6-0.

@@tonygambino5905 The Canadians beat the Soviets 7-3 four days before losing the final 8-1. Had the two teams played a series, it could have gone to the Canadians, as it did in 87. Definitely a great Soviet team but the greatest team ever? Mehh.
I beg to differ, that 87 canada cup team was stacked just as much as this gold medal team, difference I see is that the 87 team had line mates from stanley cup winning teams, the 2002 team didn't. The hockey was better in 87 as well I watched both series thoroughly and both teams are great but the 87 team with Grezt and Mario out do the 2002 team. But in the big picture both teams won !

Being an 11-year-old Swedish kid who loved ice hockey and watching his first Olympics, I remember being so excited after the Sweden - Canada game. Sweden felt unstopable. Then BOOM, knocked out in the quarter final by Belarus. It's still considered by many Swedes to be the biggest tragedy to ever happen within Swedish sports (not including deaths and such of course).
I'm sorry, Erik. I hear you. It was a tragedy, especially considering Belarus then got decimated by Canada, whereas Sweden might have beat Canada. Hockey is like that. Unpredictable. I really do believe, though, the players do their best. I hate the fact that Sweden was so hard on their players after their loss to Belarus. It felt cruel given what these boys were already feeling, but maybe you have a different take? If so, I'd love to hear it. Be well, my fellow hockey fan!
That goal Salo let in off his head ! Tommy was never the same goalie after that series.
Most people only remember the fluke goal that went in off Salo's head. But I think they underestimated Belarus. The team lost its focus: they started making defensive mistakes, slamming gates, barking at each other. I personally think the turning point in that game was when Belarus scored shorthanded. still I think the funniest comment at the time was an interview the Toronto Sun did with Expressen's Mats Olsson about the fan reaction back home: he revealed that some of the readers calling for the players' passports to be taken away.

Without a doubt. I even have the McFarlane figures of this team, the greatest hockey team to every hit the ice. My favorite olympic hockey memory of all time. I was glued to the tv watching this game.

I was at Work that day 6am-6pm @ the Hospital ! Thankfully most of the patients were watching that game on tv.Apon delivering the Meals i was able to catch the end! Great game!!

I remember watching this game as a kid in Ontario. My family was all glued to the tv. When the final buzzer went we grabbed our big canada flags and my brother and I ran outside and were waving it up and down the street. People were out cheering and car horns were honking everywhere. I had a bit of a cold so my mom was trying to bring me back inside but we were all just too pumped. My dad drove us downtown and everyone was just celebrating. Flags everywhere, horns going, smiles, and cheers. Was so great. One of my favourite memories.
'72 was amazing. '87 Canada Cup was a dream to watch. 2010 was hockey Gold. But '02 Gold Medal Game was the greatest hockey game I've ever watched... hands down the greatest team Canada has ever put on the ice.🇨🇦🥇🏅🎖🎉
Well if it was the greatest then why did they get hammered by the Swedes 5-2? No way was that the best ever. The '87 team was Canada's best, with both Mario AND Gretzky. But yeah this game was great. The Americans were awesome as well.
'72 was amazing? You mean when Bobby Clarke and the rest of the Canadian team played the dirtiest hockey in the history of the sport? No one outside Canada considers that a legitimate victory.
The '02 team was not Canada's best ever. The US team was better that year. The '87 team was the best.

I remember watching these games at school, the principal was a huge hockey guy and allowed every class to watch the games instead of school work. The teachers would roll in a television on a stand and we'd just watch the games.

It is speculated that Roy couldn't pass a drug test and the playoffs where his public excuse
roy retired like a year later he had enough. plus roy got the cup a year before and had 3 other rings to have 4 in total. and is considered by many as the goat goalie. i think he's alright.

@ The 1:27:40 mark that goal is the straw that broke the camels back. The way Sakic speeds up the ice protects the puck at full tilt in their zone and drops it to Yzerman. Game over that's hockey.

I don't remember much from watching this game live, I was nervous as fuck up until the last 5 minutes... it's nice re-watching it all these years later without my heart in my mouth the whole game
My team is the USA, but if they're out, Canada is my 2nd choice. Gretzky was right, seems like everyone else roots against them, because they're always the best and deepest team top to bottom, front to back. This was a hell of a tournament, and the best team won. Some of my all time favorite players were on the ice in that gold medal game. What an incredible pool of talent.

Even though it's not quite as iconic, I'd put Gretzky's speech after the Czech tie, right up there with Espo's speech in '72.
At the 1 hr 19 min mark Fleury looking off the Sudafed and could use 20 of the red wonders. I bet he celebrated the Gold with a few bumpski's that went into a couple day bender. He wore sunglasses 24/7 and then the tinted shield on the ice. Hockey players are either grounded or a bit insane...more so then and not so much these days. This is a great video that is well put together.

Gretzky's insistence to take the best, regardless of age or reputation was key, and set the tone for modern Canadian international hockey rosters. 2006 was weak, between waves of talent, but 2010 and 2014 were prime examples, with gold medals as an easily predictable result. In the Canada Cup days this was not the case...
For instance, 1987, the team had Dineen, Tochhet, C. Lemieux, Propp, and Brent Sutter. All solid players... BUT, they were chosen for reputation, while the more talented and skilled Steve Yzerman, Ron Francis, Brian Trottier, Marcel Dionne, Luc Robataille, Denis Savard, and Dino Ciccarelli were watching on T.V. (all the latter were much hotter at the time than the former). Switch these players and it is not as exciting a final with the Soviets. The Canucks win without the intrigue and stress. Hands down!
For 1998 in Nagano, Bobby Clarke named a roster also based on reputation, and not on skill and talent as best suited for big international ice surfaces. So Zamuner, Linden, Stevens, Primeau and Corson were chosen over the obviously better (Wayne method): Murphy, Turgeon, Robataille, Recchi, and Oats. Perhaps Canada would have beaten the Czechs if they could have iced more talent.
(Disclaimer, although I was reading the papers and watching at the tie, I do forget the injury status of the above mentioned men.) I'm just talking approach here, of Wayne's (best of now), vs. Keenan and Clarke's approach looking for toughness and chosing biased favourites.
Yzerman being left off in 1987 by Keenan was CRIMINAL. He was the 3rd best offensive player in the world at the time.
The only thing Wayne couldn't get on this team was HIMSELF. How much do you think he was wishing he could be down there on the ice with them.
The CC was before the 87 season started. Yzerman didn't even have his first 40 goal or 100 pt season yet. He was a great player but was still relatively young

Remembering both 87 and 02 the only thing I thought made 87 better was the goaltending, Fuhr was better for Canada than either Joseph or Brodeur over the whole tournament run. Though Brodeur got better with each game.
Also if I remember correctly Clarke built the 98 to combat the USA who many felt had outmuscled Canada in the 96 world cup. As a result they were slower and less skilled than they should've been. Ironically both the US and Canada fell to the gritty faster Czechs.
