  • We know you just can't get enough of train/rail work time lapses! Watch as the Wilkerson Crane company and the Railroads clean up the mess in less than 2 days. We called this our "Tonka Stream" behind-the-scenes. Derailment happened on September 15, 2020. Enjoy!

      so it is actually pretty simple they use radio, also they got cameras installed on top so they can see exact place where hook is. they are actually like play computer game, i worked with same type cranes in finland, it is just routine for them

    First derailment I've ever seen where there was minimal damage to the track, the train operator slowly came to a complete stop at the very first sign of the derailment and not a car was lost. Very professional work guys !!!! 😆👍👍👍

    Crane operators always amaze me!! The room for error is next to nothing. I would say this is why they get paid extremely well.

    I think the photographer at 0:22 put something on the rails and prepared the tripod camera to film. Had all planed.
    He probably also owns a crane-rental shop.

    was there ever any explanation for how it derailed in the first place? i'm confused as to how an elevated stretch of track like that could get so dilapidated

      So I guess if the crossover on the bridge had trailing points set to diverging into the curve, and the lead trucks of the lead engine hit the trailing points, it might have pushed the lead truck to detach the outside rail and cause the engines and the train to tip to the right, right?

      Just curious, how much do you consider "HUGE bucks"? And how many crane operator salaries are you familiar with?

      @@DrLumpy I worked in Northern Canada in oil and gas - and I saw some of the numbers for certified crane operators .
      Operators could make 1000-4000 USD a day in many cases.
      It would be inline with some of the most highly qualified/specialized gigs.

    I have questions... Were those autoracks loaded? Curious what would happen to the cars in them, if there were any. Two were lifted off the bridge and set down on the ground, without trucks. What happened to them? Everything else was moved off, except them. Kinda makes me think they were empty, but I'd still like to know. Especially since the cranes and everyone else left them sitting there when they packed up. What kind of damage did it do to the bridge? Did they just have to replace rails or was more work needed? Very curious.

      While fascinating to watch this is pretty much as minor a derailment as they get, not a big deal for the UP. No injuries, no haz-mat, not even a blocked grade crossing. No reason for NTSB to get involved other than a 2-page report from the UP to be filed. Great video by V-R as usual!

      ​@@richardcarlson127 The FRA, however, is another story. Any derailment causing over $1200 in damage (in short, *any* derailment) must be reported, and the train crew involved has to take a drug test, whether it's their fault or not.

    Actually the derailment occurred on 74 and 75 track of the Kansas City Terminal Railroad. Santa Fe jct is ground level .

      You do realize that two of the cranes used are from Liebherr and build in Germany? So it is safe to assume that Germany/Swiss has the same expertise in crane operations as the US.
      And a lot of other countries also develop and build their own cranes.

      Jehty ...It doesn’t matter whose equipment is being used in this particular case. The US is numero uno when it comes to emergency response and disaster preparedness. How many countries have you seen at the rescue/ recovery site when a plane crashes into the ocean? How many satellites do Sweden and Germany have to track every airplane flying in the skies? Sure, Germany, Sweden and other European countries are technologically advanced, but sorry my friend...no one can touch the U.S 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸 That’s just the way it is. The resources, capabilities, the willingness and the commitment of the US are second to none. Yes I’m proud to be a nationalist when it comes to my country and my home 🇺🇸🇺🇸

      The RRs likely have contracts in place for this type of work (lifting heavy things).
      Thats what risk management is for.

      The fix it fast prearranged deal....
      i can only image the cost in time and money the RR incurred in rerouting trains around that super busy junction each hour....
      In reality, they couldn't repair that track fast enough.

    Just like when my H.O. train set would pop off the track, just pick it up and put it back on... Only much bigger. Glad no one got hurt.

    Cool to watch people in what they do ! This is real dangerous and loaded car on a bridge or empty.
    All I can say is fine job. Glad the correct people got the call. All the chains and cables and swing. Thank All that put these on here. Again doing there trade in this for us.
