She is speaking in the song as Catherine Earnshaw from Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights. It’s a very disturbing novel about obsession and revenge. In the story, Catherine Earnshaw dies (she starves herself to death), returns as ghost, and wanders the moors and appears outside Heathcliff’s window trying to be let in. The song is actually quite haunting. “I’m so cold, let me in your window…”
The reason Kate sounds like that is because she's trying to sound/sing like a ghost. Glad you went there. It's such a classic. I absolutely love this song, one of my favourite of all songs and all times and descrubes so well the relation between Cathy & Heathcliff " How could you leave me / When I needed to possess you? / I hated you, I loved you, too"

The Kick Inside has been widely regarded as a work of genius and Rolling Stone lists it among the top albums of the 70s!! She recieved a British award for best lyrics for a song she wrote when she was 13, which also topped the UK charts, "The man with the child in his eyes" By the age of 16, she had written over 200 songs w voice and piano.
