Same. My moms father was a right bastard but the korean war added to him. The rest of my grandparents I adored to bits. My dad's ashes are buried with his mom in the cemetery we both worked at. And I buried my ww2 vet g.pa with a good book about churchill's mad tinkerers from the war, because he didn't get to read it yet. I live in my other grandmothers house for memories too. My only happy point of they're passing is they aren't in pain anymore. Living is full of pain but when you have something to care for you will take extra pain for your loved ones. And it's a good thing when the old pass if they are in a horrible shape.
      I'll stop rambling now.

I remember one day I was walking in the woods with my mate (We were 15). We meet this old guy walking his dog. He asked us "you done drugs yet" we said "No". He followed with "have you got drunk yet" we said "no". He paused and looked at us and said " You two are bloody boring, go and have some real fun" The three us just started laughing. So we walked with this old man with his dog for about an hour till we reached his house. Even to this day that was the best conversations I've ever had. Similar situation here, we only have one grandparent left but she's very much transactional - you can only call her if there's a reason (whereas we speak to my mam just because we fancy a chat) and there's no warmth there, it's always got the be on her terms. I was lucky enough to remember my other grandparents and they were the warmest, most loving people I've ever met and sadly they've been gone over 15+ years now

My gran has a hospital appointment tomorrow, so she's staying with my family for a week. As she is getting something about her new artificial hip she has. She's gonna be here soon, and I always have the best chats with her. We go off on rants and chat about our favourite shows.
I also ask her about my late grandad, her husband, so she can relive when she was younger. Questions like:
What did you learn at school?
    What was grandad like?
What was your mum and dad like?
Her eyes have never lightened up so much. And I see her eyes watering up with certain memories so I am always listening to comfort her. I always explain my autism is slightly different to everyone else's, she loves to listen about my progress in musical theatre, school, how I get on with my friends. It's amazing.

Me too. I’m 45. I used to see my gp every two weeks but thanks to the virus I’ve only had a few calls with him in the last year. Last time I saw him in person was April 2020. It’s now Feb 2021. I go to the chiro every 6 weeks. Can’t do that over the phone. Mum visits probably on average once every two weeks, depending on how bad I am. If I’m not coping she stays away so I can rest. I have a carer once every two weeks who changes the sheets and does the bare minimum of cleaning. Seeing my gp less is the only impact on my life from the virus and our lockdown. On the plus side, I didn’t struggle with lockdown at all. It was just normal life. I don’t think I’d say that I suffer from loneliness though. There’s a difference between alone and lonely. But the void left when I lost my precious little dog to old age was enormous, so perhaps being alone puts you much closer to the edge of lonely. So even if you’re generally okay about being alone, it takes a smaller hit to knock you over the edge than if you were surrounded by people supporting you.

When the next time you feel reluctance in going up to people and starting a chat.... remember they are feeling exactly like you. Someone has to take the first step and you are taking that, to help them feel comfortable. Most people in the world are nice like you and would appreciate a kind smile and a talk. Only trying it repeatedly would get you better at it... like any computer game. Making friends is easier than winning that game. Good luck!

My Gran tells the same story to me & others about how when we used to travel together when I was a wee boy that I would always take a backpack of cars with me and line them up wherever I was.
This one time on a ferry I was lining them up all neat & perfectly, a gentleman sitting in the same area couldn't help but notice how I was placing them in a certain order. Me & my gran went away for some breakfast & while away he swapped a couple of them about.
When I came back I sat in front of them, looked at the cars, looked at the man, looked at my gran, I did this a few times before the man plucked up in amazement that I'd noticed 3/4 cars out of place in the hundred odd that I'd parked up.
She's told me this story many many times, I could recite it word for word, but I let her tell it every time because of the joy it brings her, reminiscing the memory. Now I can't remember it, I was only a wee boy but I love hearing it every time, I cherish it more & more each time she tells it.

I'm in my schools choir and we always get really excited when we get to visit people and just sing for them, our school is built across the road from an elderly home and for a Christmas we went across and we sang carols for them. It was so lovely to see them all singing along with us and near the end they were nice enough to give us a box of chocolates but we had to go to one of them, I have social anxiety so I was really scared and I just stood there, there were two friends to the left of the group and no one went to them. I looked over to them and I smiled and went to them, one of them said "oh, uh, be careful. Just be patient she's blind" my heart broke and the woman said "oh is a student here?" I knelt down and she took my hand and thanked me for the carols and gave me the chocolates, I literally cheered up and I thanked her so much and as we left I literally shed a tear because of how sweet she was and how good of friends those two were

You never know the story behind why people discarded their elderly relatives.
There can be loads of different reasons. You don't have to go completely against what's good for you just because somebody is old and related to you by a random combination of genes. Why should you want to hang out with people you don't like/who don't like you/have always treated you like crap in the past?
I have a step-grandmother who was like the evil stepmother from Cinderella to my mum and her brother when they were kids. Always obviously putting her own kids first. She continued to do that with my siblings and me and her biological grandchildren. She also froze my mum's grandparents, who lived in the same house, out of the family life. My mum never said a word about all the shit that had been going on all those years ago, though, to keep the family peace.
After my grandad passed, this 'grandmother' presented us with a forged will, and tried to iniquitously take my mum's and uncle's inheritance (=the house they were born in) and give it to her own children.
To this day, she sees no wrong in her actions (despite there being profound legal evidence), and portrays herself as the victim in all of this.
Why should I go visit such a person?
I live with my other grandma, though, and even though she is in a rapidly progressing stage of dementia, we would never put her in a home because she's always been there for us. She's basically been our third parent for the first 18 years of my life.
    What goes around comes around.
What I'm trying to say is: Don't judge somebody's family relations, and why people aren't talking to their elderly relatives, or why people don't just forgive and move on if you don't know the details of an issue as complicated as family ties and relationships.
Having grandparents is great, though, and if your real ones are shit or have passed, go to such a club and find yourself some adoptive grandparents. You'll both benefit from it to a great extent.

    • @randomstranger6577
      @randomstranger6577 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Know it's been a while but thought I'd reply in agreement anyway, just because you're related doesn't mean you have to like them. If they treat you like shit and if you weren't related you would cut them out of your life then it should be done. So what you share genetics? A bitch is a bitch, and don't call your self conscious overweight daughter a man mountain... Because that's really rude grandma
