0:07 Solid Ramstein bug into a perfect bugslide. Sadly, you can´t see, how this turned to a uber-bug, lifting hefest straight to the finish and breaking the WR by 0.0024 seconds, showing that the impossible was indeed possible.
This footage is from Yannick Dalmas and Peter Dumbreck's crashes at the 1998 Petit Le Mans and the 1999 Le Mans 24 Hours respectively. Both drivers survived relatively uninjured, but the latter (as well as multiple similar crashes) effectively ended the Mercedes-Benz CLR project, as well as the company's participation in Le Mans entirely.
It’s fitting that the car goes off of the track in the next shot. Of course he was looking to use a previously unknown shortcut he had just discovered, hoping to gain 0.064791842301 seconds on the world record.
When you are going at like a measly 200mph, wind resistance gets really high. If the car hits a bump ( which it did in both clips) air moves under the car, the air then just the front of the car at 200mph but it doesn’t effect the back until it is exposed, when the back is exposed it’s too late and the front has been pushed over causing it to flip, very bad explanation but I don’t study science or physics Andy thing in the STEM direction really.
no In fact there's a TV segment you can find on TH-cam of him visiting the site of the accident 20 years later that I definitely recommend if you're interested. The driver's name is Peter Dumbreck.
When you're on a razor's edge to get the last bit of performance, you're suddenly very susceptible for small deviations. If you're past your 30s you might remember a time when computers were so rapidly getting better that you'd have to buy a new gaming rig literally every year to keep up. In that "weapons race", every bit of performance was squeezed out - which lead to stuff breaking really quickly. As the curve of what was possible (and by proxy what was necessary) flattened, computers lasted a lot longer.
Both drivers survived the crashes with little injury. When improper auto design turns a racetrack into a runway, of course people are going to be interested.
Barely missed the nosebug. Could’ve been WR
Its tbe BackBug. You now get more boost by perfectly landing on your back (real)
Unfortunate...
he did try to compensate it with an bugslide but he failed
I thought bugs only existed in the tech world.

Corrected from a previous version misidentifying the first crash as Mark Webber at the 1999 Le Mans 24h warmup.
@@puppableIf that was Webber that would have been perfect considering F1 Valencia 2010
