    I have restored several lanterns (8) and 3 stoves. Some fonts were rusted but fixed with citric acid, some bb's and a bolt with threads that fit the font. Cut off the bolt head and chuck into a drill. Let her spin for a couple of hours then flush with alcohol and let dry. Many a font have been saved by this method. Our friend Roger Malcolm was Coleman's number 1 fix it man in Witchita Kansas for over 30 years and was retired 3 times because of the Company being sold. He took an old rusty Aladdin gas lamp we found at a sale and made it shine and work like brand new. We rented and lived on a Amish farm at that time and all our lights were gas or oil. We had plenty of old Coleman lanterns as well and her told and showed us how Sunbeam bought Coleman and stopped lifetime warranty because the started importing. All old ones are best because of brass and steel American made. We bought a new propane one (import) and it blew up in our yard. Never buy new junk stick with old American made ! Love and God Bless ! Uncle Jeff!

    Now that I'm getting deeper into this and have acquired, repaired and restored a lot of equipment I've learned a couple things. First off new doesn't mean better. I have a bunch of lanterns that have been used and abused for decades and still run as good as the day they were made. The second is new, doesn't mean new. Here recently I bought a new old stock lantern and stove. The lantern needed cleaning to run right and a new generator. The single burner stove needed a check valve and a new generator! this was NIB never opened and never fired from 1990! So, the point is that old or new, unless it's brand new current model, you may be facing repairs!

    I have a similar model with rubber gaskets (1988). I wasn't getting pressure. I simply pulled the pump out and reoiled it. Works great now!

    Great tips! A few years back I bought an old, red, one mantel Coleman off of Ebay......it looked great on the outside, even had the cardboard box......When I got it I discovered that the fuel tank was horribly corroded. Now it's no better than a decoration.

    • @kenneth6731
      @kenneth6731 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      They don't call it a fuel tank, they call it a fount. If you look on the bottom of the fount you will find the date code. You can get a new fount off of ebay for $15. In 30 minutes with nothing more than a Crescent wrench you can have it up and running. I did this with a Burgundy 200A that was out in the rain for 40 years. Now it's my best running lantern.

    • @countryhamop4580
      @countryhamop4580 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kenneth6731 Good to know they're still readily available. There was a red 200A that was sitting on a picnic table next to one of my transmitter sites. Someone put it there early to mid summer last year, and when it was still sitting there end of this past winter I decided it was abandoned and grabbed it to see if I could restore it. Yep- some rust in the fount but it could have been worse if there hadn't been a bit of fuel in there. I've seen some other videos where they've de-rusted the insides of theirs. I'll try that first but will try eBay for a replacement if I can't get it clean.

    • @w.rustylane5650
      @w.rustylane5650 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Corroded tanks don't mean that the lantern is unserviceable. Fonts can be really cleaned by finding a bolt the same threads as the bung, filled with some vinegar or citric acid and some bb's. Cut the head off the bolt and chuck into a drill and let her spin for a couple of hours. Surprisingly how quick a corroded font can be made functional. Just have to use the brain housing group.

    Inflation hit Coleman parts too. Now about $22 for a 220/228 Coleman Generator! Knock-off for about $11 but you get what you pay for.

    Good tips. I just started restoring my Grandfather's 228E that I received this past year and his Coleman stove that I think was used once. I'm restoring for posterity and use, I do enjoy using my stoves and lanterns at night during the summer as background lighting around the fire pit or grilling. Good ideas that will help me in my future videos restoring these lanterns and stoves.

    I normally look to see if the lantern was ever taken apart and when put back together is everything in the right place. Is the cap and pump where they should be. Is the valve where it should be. Is the burner assembly clocked in the proper position. You can avoid a lot of headaches just knowing what you are looking at.

    • @RavenwoodAcres
      @RavenwoodAcres  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is a great tip. I know that clocking them in the same spot as from the factory is challenging. Thanks for the feedback.

    so many lanterns where used a few times, but stored bad, this one appears very used, I really admire that, makes you think of all the camping and fishing trips it has been on, (as they say, lots of caratar) and it's more rewarding bringing these back to life and using them, rather than a really nice classic one and afraid anything happens to it, not knocking a nice one. what's the birth date of this on and your oldest one.

    • @RavenwoodAcres
      @RavenwoodAcres  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed, only one lantern in my collection is in what I would consider in fair condition. I try to be careful with that one but the rest of them I use at least once a year. At minimum I get them out of storage fuel them and run them for a hour or so.

    I have a 220E 5/77 one burner is not lighting. How can I fix it with out replacing a lot of parts?

    • @RavenwoodAcres
      @RavenwoodAcres  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If only one burner is lighting you most likely have a clog in that burner tube. If that is the case, just disassemble the burner tubes and clean out a with tube brush.

  • @gusbuster8068

    I just seen one like this with case too at a antique store for $65 but thought that was high. Should I get it?

    • @RavenwoodAcres
      @RavenwoodAcres  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Depending on it's condition, $65 is on the high side. I would see if they willing to come down on the price. If not, I would most likely still buy it. The old case are pretty hard to find

    • @gusbuster8068
      @gusbuster8068 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ravenwood Acres yeah I’m kinda thinking about going back and getting it. Pretty much most antique stores I’ve been to the average for lanterns are $65-75. I scored a 1987 Coleman powerhouse for $35 really good condition no rust.

    • @RavenwoodAcres
      @RavenwoodAcres  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gusbuster8068 I see similar pricing in the antique store in my area. The best deals are always at yard sales but you can go to dozens and not find even one. Occasionally, I find good deal at second hand stores because they don't know what they have.

    How is the part with the mantels supposed to work is it supposed to drip fuel in the mantles I am to worried to light it until I know for sure it is proper?

    • @RavenwoodAcres
      @RavenwoodAcres  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Pressurized fuel raises from the tank and mixes with air in the mixing chamber. From there it follows out of the burner tube into the mantles. No, fuel should not drip from the mantels. If it does I would inspect the gas generator.
