Spice Cabinet from 1665! Restoration and repair of this old antique brought back to life

- We find a note hidden on the inside of this small oak spice cupboard. The note gives us some clues as to how old this box might be. We look for similar pieces online and conclude this indeed could be from the time of the Great Plague of London. I take you through the cleaning, repair and restoration process.
"This cabinet was
given to me by
my mother.
When I was 16 years old
1865. It being
given to her when
12 years old 1834
It being her mother
Great Grandmama
in the 1665"

Cabinet Restoration
This is my mum's cabinet. She's delighted with the repair and we're so glad to see it restored. Many many thanks. Katy
Hi Katy - your so welcome, I am really happy it will have a good home
What a lovely heirloom! I hope you add your own note for history.
@@TheCottackWorkshopcan you please tell me what you put on the paper? You said you preserved it.
@@fdort3971 I didn't add anything to the paper, simply left it in place untouched.
@@TheCottackWorkshop thanks
Most people that do restorations want to make the piece new. The age is what makes the piece special. Thank you for not going to those extremes.
Thank you for watching and commenting
Most people mind their own business
What an absolute honor to be trusted with something that old and sentimental. I love the care and respect you showed for a relic such as this! Beautiful piece, beautifully restored! ❤❤
Many thanks much appreciated
When I seem some of the terrible channels on here with hundreds of thousands of subscribers I am befuddled as to how you have so few. It's a very good channel with some well-considered and skilful restoration. I will do my part and spread the word.
That’s very kind of you, thank you. It’s a slow build and I really appreciate the support!
Wonderful craftsmanship !! Bravo!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼🤩🤩🤩❤
@thecottackworkshop I will tell you why that is - the camera work is very uncomfortable. I don’t want to be critical, but hopefully it will be taken as constructive because I do think the work is good. Like many people, I watch the woodworking videos to relax, and this made my head hurt. Sorry.
@@jls6nI don’t agree.
I love watching restoration videos. The talent and magic that you can do to restore these is amazing!
Many thanks for watching and commenting
Amazing that a piece from 1665 is still around today!
Thanks for watching - yes I ageee
This is the first your videos that I've seen, but I'll be following you from now on. It was not only a pleasure to watch; it was also a tutorial, to teach and instruct those of us who are sick of seeing, beautiful wood covered in paint (for profit)! Thank you for sharing your craftsmanship! 👍
Thank you!
Thank you Abigail - much appreciated
I love to hear you “ talking to yourself” and to let us listen to you working things out and talking us through it. Beautiful job! You’ve just become one of my favourite Chanel’s - along with Thomas Johnson, flipping drawers, AT restoration and Mayfield restoration.
Thank you so much!
All the best furniture restorers have cats.
Ha! And if you have a Bengal, then you might say all the best cats have a furniture restorer!
@@TheCottackWorkshop it's funny you say that...Jay from Flipping Drawers has a bengal too and lives in the UK!
Yes all have cats
Beautifully restored! The best part was you didn’t strip it down n sanded each piece. You left so much of the patina. You fixed areas that could be fixed n done correctly. I love the new little knobs you put on it. I agree they look more original too. I’ve never seen that style so small.
Katy must be very proud of this piece. I hope it continues to be passed down in each generation n taken care of with much love.
♥️♥️♥️♥️😊👍👍👍👍🌟
Thank you!
Loved this!!❤❤ I want a spice cabinet from 1665 now. Of course I’d keep secrets in mine.
Thank you!
I love to watch craftsman hands as they work on restorations. Their knowledge and care is so obvious in their fluid , careful movements.
Baumgarten Art Restorations also has some fascinating videos that show the attention to detail that it takes to repair the wear and tear of time on beautiful pieces.
Lovely work, thank you.
That is so kind - thank you!
What a beautiful cat.
Toffee the Bengal! Thanks for watching
I found you somehow and amazing work. I like how you maintain the originality and leave the patinas of the years. I watch a person that has a cat just like you but his is a kitten.
Many thanks for watching
You’ve done a fantastic job of restoring this, it looks beautiful 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Thank you!
A lot to learn about the work of restoring old items. A sensitive approach. Thank you!
Thank you very much
Such an interesting restoration to watch. All the thought and planning you put into this spice box, its history, fascinating! Thank you for sharing this I was thoroughly invested in you completing the project and not destroying the patina. Really wonderful video and wonderful restoration!
Glad you enjoyed it - thank you
Beautiful restoration! Even just cleaning it at the beginning made a huge difference. Can't wait to see more from your channel!
Thanks so much! 😊
That was a job very nicely and very respectfully done for the originality of the piece. Kudos!

Beautiful. I love that the rustic aspects are still such a part of its character.

It's so nice to see how such wonderful old furniture can shine again. A person who understands this and achieves it with skill and expertise is a master of his trade.

Thank you! Much appreciated. Toffee is an asset for sure!
Your cat said that those pulls need to be removed. He’s a cutie! Well Done Restoration. Gentle, respectful and understanding the history of the piece requires that the flaws must be preserved too.
Thank you - you are of course right. Toffee (the Bengal cat)
Absolutely beautiful and you did an excellent job in restoring it. This could be a museum piece. Great piece of history. I enjoyed the video. Thank you.

If this were mine, I probably would use it as a jewelry box.
I think anything that keeps these antique loved and in use is a great idea!

Greetings from Russia. The restoration was done quite carefully and with respect for history.
Thank you
Great job! Beautiful and still true to origins!

This was fantastic!

Good job. Split pin pulleys would probably have been the most appropriate handles for the drawers. Thanks to your work the beautiful Spice Box has gained another 369 years of life. Thanks for sharing the step-by-step restoration process. I'm looking forward to enjoying your videos. Cheers
What a lovely comment - thank you so much

Found you while watching the Flipping Drawers channel. Very impressive restoration.

A thing of great beauty, well done you and Toff { I think that's what you called the cat] with the beautiful eyes.

Thank you! I've just posted a pole asking what you'd like to see next...
Good call on the drawer pulls!
Thank you!
Great job. 👍
Thank you!
Beautiful
Thank you Jeff
This has to be the coolest furniture restoration I've ever seen. I really wasn't thrilled when you said you were going to leave the unoriginal pulls; so when you realized there was a problem with them and you opted for replacing them, I looked forward to what you were going to replace them with. Those little pulls you put in are delightful. I think it would be a conversation piece anywhere it was taken. Did the owner tell you what she was going to put in it?
Thank you so much - very much appreciated. I think it is going to be handed down to the next generation. I will ask.
That was great, nice job. I collect seventeenth century furniture. It's usually in a bad state here in Ireland. Restorers usually know nothing about it. One thing though, that nail you thought was a carpet tack, I think was a seventeenth or eighteenth century rose head nail. You have given me some good ideas. Keep up the good work.
Thank you!
I love the sponge painting, gives it that Hoosier farmhouse vibe . Screwing it to an ikea nightstand ( not to my taste,but...) is not to my taste. You've done an excellent job updating an old spice holding box.
Thank you
Amazing!
Thanks!
I have used Murphy’s oil soap to clean furniture and hardwood floors. for years. Nothing else cleans my wooden furniture or floors better.
Murphy’s has a multi use cleaner in a spray bottle I found at Walmart. It puts a nice shine to your furniture.
Occasionally after I clean the furniture I will go over it with Old English once the furniture has dried.
Thanks for watching and commenting
Beautiful ❤
Thank you
It could be possible for the generations of the family to go back to 1665 as it can depend on how big the families were in each generation. For example, I was born 1960, my dad in 1929, my paternal grandfather in 1889, great grandfather in 1857 and great great grandfather in 1830. In other words, it is possible to go back over a pretty long period with relatively few generations.
Nice work on the box, by the way!
Thanks Nick ...it is possible but it would need the AVERAGE age giving birth of all of the Mums to be age 39 for it to work. I used 27. In your example its the paternal line you're following and the average age they had sons is 32 (31,40,32,27). At this average, even your paternal line would take 9 generations to get back to 1665 ...your great great great great great great great Grandfather born 1670!
I have just found your channel, and I am very impressed with the job you did on the spice cabinet. I am looking forward to seeing what else you have done or will be doing
Thank you very much
Just found your channel what a beautiful restoration. Subscribing now.
Thank you!
Fantastic.
Many thanks!
Well done!
Thanks Keith
You did a magnificent job restoring this beautiful antique spice cabinet.
I didn't catch or remember if you cleaned and oiled the bottom piece on the outside where it sits. So many people don't do anything to the back or bottom of the items they are restoring because no one sees it. But, the wood is dry and old and needs to be cleaned and moisturized as well.
I didn't particularly like the red felt. I liked the vintage wallpaper pieces that were inside most of the drawers. I would've looked for something like that. Did you put the historical record paper back on the inside of the left piece of wood?
I have my Grandparents' curved glass curio cabinet
that they received when they got married in 1916.
It's simple but beautiful.
I also have a rocking chair that Grandma brought to me when I was in nursing school about 1964. It was over 100 years old at that time. I wish you were near me to do a bit of restoration work on these.
You do good work !!!❤😊
Many thanks - appreciate the detailed comments. I left the red felt unglued so it all just lifts out if the owner wants to do something different! The historical record was untouched in the middle section. Thank you!
Excellent work. I was glad to see you didn’t comprise the integrity of the piece. Beautiful
stunning
Thank you
beautiful kitty. Such a wonderful result.
Thank you!
I CHALLENGE YOU TO MAKE A BRAND NEW COPY OF THE SPICE CABINET HERE.
What a great idea. Getting some decent wide grain oak is the first task! …
Maybe the lock was replaced so many times because they lost the key while the safe was open. For something that old, I'm not surprised it has been repaired so many times especially if the repairing person was not a professional. I'll bet that wood has NEVER been fed before! The Reveal was amazing! And your cat is so beautiful!
Thank you so much for watching and commenting.
Sweet!
Thanks!
I agree. So I subscribed and liked it!
Thank you!
I'm pretty sure that the author of the note there, when referring to the Great Grandmother, was stating that she was in fact HIS Great Grandmother and not his mother's Great Grandmother. Thus making the box rather less venerable than one would hope for. That aside, a marvellous job sir.
Thanks for watching and commenting - interesting!
beautiful!
Thank you!
I love it.
Thank you!
Nice restoration and it was ready for it, I used to be in Antique trade and a nice giveaway for its age showed itself whilst i was looking at the small drawers and any old antique dealers will have spotted what i am saying but not giving anything away and if you dont know you dont, but a very nice early piece.
Very interesting - and thank you for commenting!
That is nicely done. Very beautiful. Since the pulls were added latter and you replaced the inside ones, I think you should have replaced the one on the outside door also to match the new ones on the inside.
Yes I agree - I have a spare pull and want the owner to agree but I am also conscious they have had the old cabinet on display for decades and “remember” the old style. I’ll leave it to them but agree with you!
This isn't a "spice rack", it is a "spice safe" since it is boxy and locks. Looks intriguing.
You are of course correct - protecting very rare and expensive items
