Cheers :) Sounds like a good starting plan, I've written down my a list of my favourite paint ranges and metallics here: taleofpainters.com/2023/08/stahlys-best-miniature-paints-warhammer-2024/
Your list is interesting because Vallejo Model Color Ivory was the first paint that made me fall out with PA paints. I actually would not have gone back to test the new Vallejo Game and Model color lines if not for your model color review that covered why people were getting bubbles. I got rid of all of my PA paints because of that video and haven't looked back lol
Finally and with fortunate timing! I've been holding off with deciding on a paint for the Veteran Guardsmen gas masks and blankets waiting for this swatch. Now I've almost reached the point when I had no other elements left to paint.
I've got maybe a dozen Pro Acryl colours, chosen somewhat at random based on what I thought looked useful. Happy to see then that I've got seven of the paints shown here. I would agree with the other comment that Vince's Paynes Grey is a great colour too, possibly a little better than Blue Black.
Great video as it gave more insight than your standard reviews. Going to have to try some of your recommendations that I have not used yet. Would love to see a similar video like this with the two thin coats range.
Light bronze and all the jades are my favs. I’d love to see some AP speedpaints uses/top 10. My father grabbed me the set for a gift and i rarely use them, other than the metals those are nice.
The copper from Pro-Acryl is the best copper paint I've found. Potentially the best metallic paint. It is the only metallic that actually looks like the metal it claims to be straight from the bottle. On the model it doesn't look like paint, it looks like copper.
@charlesnunya2347 hello. I hope you are well. Have you tried any of the paints from the sets in this video yet? I have all three sets now, and I love the Rogue Hobbies set. The Matt Cexwish and Ben Komets sets aren't really to my taste, but I have found uses for them. I'm a huge sucker for Pro-Acryl; if I could get hold of their sable brushes I'd use them as I've heard they're excellent. Almost everything they make is excellent; their primer is the best I've used so far. I'm looking to buy some Mr Hobby surface soon, I wonder whether Pro-Acryl will still my favourite after as I've heard Mr Hobby makes excellent products. My only complaints with Pro-Acryl paint is from some of their first set as, potentially, mine are quite old. I have some weird problems with them. I can't glaze with any paints from the 'base set' because they all produce a weird cloudy effect. I do not have this problem with the other sets. The only paint from the three new sets that I don't like is bold titanium white; my bottle is not white, it has a weird light cream tone; double/heavy cream is almost perfect as an example of what my bold titanium white looks like. Slightly lighter than pale sand from Vallejo. It's very strange. What other brands of paint do you like? I'm a huge fan of AK 3rd gen paints. I'm slowly building the full colour range.
I really enjoyed this and would welcome additional videos like this. As an AK fan, I'd be curious what you go with there. I also like that you compare the colours to the Citadel colours.
Sorry for the long comment: 1. Yes to more top paints per paint range. 2. One step further: I’d love to see a video or series of videos on you building your ultimate “range” from your favorites across the others. Less as recommendations and more just to hear you discuss your thoughts and how you see different paints complimenting or interacting with each other. 3. Agreed on Bold Titanium White drying a bit chalky as a pure base coat. The new Vallejo whites are good, although I still really love Kimera Kolor’s white as my favorite. The new Fanatic white isn’t too bad either. 4. I’m old and have just accepted that the original GW bottles are my favorite. The hex bottles are #1 and the standard bottle (IE the one also used by P3) a close 2nd. I know the lids routinely break, but they’re what I learned to paint with and just feel natural to me. 5. I dislike the Pro-Acryl bottle tips, and have replaced mine with the flip top lids that still function as droppers. Might be my favorite version of a dropper bottle. 6. You remain my favorite TH-camr when it comes to paint. Ninjon I feel is about the closest who matches your detail and depth and you’re ability to separate opinion from objective details. I feel I actually learn more about paint in general whether you’re discussing a top ten list or doing a full review, rather than just how the colors compare or how to paint a specific model or achieve a specific effect. 7. What would be in the Stahly Signature Series?
@@MrPigments no, I have Nostalgia 94 paints, but I don’t trust Warcolours after they dropped the Nostalgia 88 range without warning. Fool me once. Also I’m referring to the bottles themselves. 90s paints had notoriously poor coverage (which the Nostalgia 94 range unfortunately mimics). I have plenty of the 88/P3/Foundry style paint bottles, but would love to have the Hex bottles themselves to use for my modern paints.
@@MasterShake9000 I'm not talking about hobby paints at all, iIm talking about actual good quality paints. Cheaper too but you'd have to mix those original colors which I have exact ratios for most of the gen 1s.
It'd be cool if you made a video putting together your ideal starter set with your preferred options from any brand that covers all of the color necessities for someone starting out!
I have the FULL range of Pro Acryl Paints excluding the latest three mini-releases and to be honest, I have come to loath them. So much so, that I have put them up for sale on Facebook Marketplace and have bought the full range of the new Game Color paints (I already have the old Model Color and Citadel). Why you ask? 1) The bottle caps suck as paint builds up on the tips which needs to be picked off all too often (yes, other droppers can be purchased but one shouldn't have to). 2) The paint quickly takes up water on the wet palette, causing it to separate, and thus rendering that 'larger' bottle volume as pointless. 3) The first layer of paint can fail to stick to the primer and has a tendency to create bizarre pools (I needed to experiment and switch primers as a result). 4) It is ultra-matte, this is a preference, but if you're not varnishing your minis like me, it doesn't blend well with other ranges. 5) Not just the white but the vast majority of colours leave a chalky finish on the mini. I have literally needed to fine sand back my Bold Pyrrole Red off my Caladius Grav Tank. I have since substituted this beautiful hue of red with GOLDEN SOFLAT Pyrrole Red (which is not chalky). 6) Because of their ultra matte and chalky like properties I find them to glaze and blend poorly. 7) The range of colours suck. Prior to the latest sub-release they had SIX, yes just SIX, colours covering yellow-orange-red (two primary and one secondary colour). So again, forcing me to mix and match their ultramatte properties with other brands. 8) One positive is that their flow from the brush is second to none, which is great for fine edge highlighting, but again this is pointless with an ultra matte that is more muted against the base layers below and typically less durable. 9) I find their metallics average. While some like the copper, brass, and dark silver are excellent, the silver and rich gold are lack lustre. I'm sticking to my Vallejo Metals and Air. 10) Their wash isn't a true wash. In fairness I love their 'black wash'. I think it's the best 'panel liner' on the market but it cannot be used if one is to drybrush over the top (a technique I like to do with necrons and metallics). It has a tendency to peel away a fine film. So great as a panel liner, extremely poor as a wash for creating gradual shades. I genuinely don't understand the hype around these paints. I find the new Valejo Game Color range to be superior in every way. I also have a few AK 3rd Gen paints and find them very nice too. I haven't tested Duncan's but would love to.
I have the same problems. I don't airbrush prime, I use rustoleum flat black primer, not primer and paint, and PA does not stick to it. That primer has basically an identical finish to the Vallejo rattle can black primer, just a bigger can and costs less. Vallejo and Ak 3rd gen completely replaced PA for me.
@@zacharysmith5859yes, probably Vallejo, either their new formular Game Color or Model Color. They compliment each other really well. If I were starting out and wanted a general go to set I'd probably just buy the new Vallejo-Squidmar sets which is a perfect selection of the best colours from each range that compliment one another. As above, I have also tested AK 3rd gen and think they're nice too. So you can't go wrong with either of these two brands.
I find your experience with Bold Titanium White interesting. Perhaps I have an old bottle but I always have to thin mine down considerably, I've always found it was quite thick overall. Not experiecned the yellowing effect but I guess I need to go look at some old minis to check now 😅
Great video. Paint ranges are so massive today that picking up the best from each makes more sense than entire sets. Would be interested to hear what your top paints from the new Vallejo ranges are.
I love Pro Acryl, and I have the complete line except for the signature series, of which I only have the rogue hobbies set. However, I have noticed that for a line with a relatively mid-sized paint range, they do seem to have a number of colors that are pretty close to each other. I am forgetting the exact names now, but there are a couple of purples that are essentially identical. Additionally, I just discovered today that the golden brown and I think the yellow ochre colors are almost identical as well. I definitely wish I had skipped a couple of those paints now. I also see a few holes in some of their lighter shades. For example, I love the bright Jade that you just showed, but I was painting a mech in cel shaded style recently, and that just wouldn't work as a highlight. It was too yellowy or something, which was surprising to me because it didn't match the other paints in its own line. Even just using that one brand, I ended up needing to kind of mix my own highlight color for the greens
Hi and apologies for the question as I am sure you have covered it before; I have just purchased 3 of your excellent hand painted swatches, Pro-Acryl, AK Gen 3 & Citadel. I want to print them at the highest quality at a minimum of A1 paper size - do you have any recommendations or printing guidelines to get the best out of the swatches please ?
Dark Magenta from ninjon's set is a very useful base for all kinds of things. It draws a great line to pretty disgusting pinks when missed with good old Vallejo Ice Yellow.
When the first paint on the list was the paint you found after years of looking that actually managed to pull off the armour you wanted on your first ever army, you know its an excellent list.
For the bright pale green, would you use that as a highlight for say bright jade? I am looking for a desaturated green but struggling to find a mid tone.
You really should add more of the classic Vallejo line paints into your reviews. They're easily one of the best paints across the color pallet and they're also the cheapest. Especially the metallics. After using the vallejo air metallics, Ill never go back to the thick shitadel metallics. At least not without a fuck load of contrast to thin them.
Since I already have an assembly of New Vallejo Game Color and AK 3rd Gen, I found the sets of Ninjon and Vince to be a great addition, since its not that easy to either find or mix these colors. I dont like the high price for these colors, but I like to use them
Bold Pyrole Red is by far my favourite red paint out of everybrand i have. Besides their red, I use PA greys and Ivorys, because I found out that AK stuff is really close to the PA in most colors I use, and AK is way cheaper and easier to get compared to PA
My favorite paint for Caucasian skin tone is Pale Flesh from Vallejo Game Color. For a more tan look, Skin Tone (also Vallejo Game Color) works well and Basic Skin Tone from AK is almost identical to it and both are excellent paints. Personally, I think the Pro Acryl Tan Flesh works better for Asian skin but it's a great paint either way.
My bold titanium white is incredibly thick. As in, I have to fully remove the lid to use it. I barely use it as a result and tend to favour FW white ink instead, but I also don't use a lot of white.
While there are some staples in the Pro Acryl range for me like Bright Warm Grey, Khaki or Payne‘s Grey, I find myself always use colours from a different brand when it needs to be very smooth. I don’t know what it is that everybody gets so exceptionally hyped about Pro Acryl but they simply don’t dry as smooth as, say , Citadel or AK. They leave a very slight grain all the time, maybe it’s the medium, but that’s why I mostly use them for basecoats so I can use other, more smooth colours on top of them.
Well matte paints have a more porous surface on a microscopic level compared to satin paints, though this helps subsequent layers as this creates more "grip" for the paint to adhere to
I totally agree! But when I compare Pro Acryl so something like Scale 75, it’s just less smooth. There are very very slight bumps in the surface that I don’t find in many other paint ranges. Just an example: I recently used Mahogany, which is an exceptionally lovely colour, on some dwarfs but compared to Charred Brown from Game Color is just had lumps and glazed not as good. I don’t question the fact that they are still good paints and that bumpy issue can be fixed with a nice varnish. I just want to question the (to me) incomprehensible hype that is generated around them, maybe encouraged by their social media strategy of promoting everybody that shares their products.
It would be great if you could do this video for other ranges, and then do a personal “if you could only have these 10/20/whatever paints total from every range” which ones would you have.
i had a problem with the cap of my bold titanium white and it doesnt close 100%, leading to the paint thickening up slightly. I bought another for thin applications and now I have a "heavy body" version for anything else :D
I like some of these paints but im absolutely lost how to use the bottles LOL. I poured a tiny bit out onto my pallet, closed the lid, and its just stuck now haha
I do own a few pro acryl but the increased drying time, tendency to separate and thin down on a wet palette I can overlook but the Matt finish is something I really dislike
Being colour blind makes choosing colour very difficult especially with some imaginative names on some of them. If you could select 15 paints across all brands what would be your ultimate go to palette plus one bonus item. I look forward to reading your reply :) Thanks you :)

I'd love to see you side by side comparisons of single colors from your favorite sets, with you pros and cons. It's really interesting see why you choose one or the other, out of similar colors from the ranges.
As always, greatly informative!
Starts strong too, I've been needing another pot of Wraithbone, as I too dislike the pots themself...but wanting a replacement!
Nice video. I like the top ten idea. Also good to compare to other ranges - particularly about the White. As usual some good tips regarding mixing colour and what do you want from a range. Thanks
Recently found you and gotta say I love your videos, best miniature paint reviews on the internet. You cover nothing but relevant information, seem completely unbiased, have great editing skills, and the way you speak keeps me engaged throughout the whole video.
I'm just getting into 40K now and I'm primarily using your content to judge which paints to use and was wondering if I could get your opinion? AK for acrylic colours, Vallejo for metallic, maybe Two Thin Coats for white (got a Tau combat patrol, colour scheme is gonna be predominantly white so I don't mind getting a premium paint just for this one colour)
I use their khaki with agrax earthshade over it on those two items and then highlight back up with khaki. I think it looks really good
I've got maybe a dozen Pro Acryl colours, chosen somewhat at random based on what I thought looked useful.
Love seeing you use the term covering power in these videos 👌
You teached me well :)
@@stahly_taleofpainters it really helps convey opacity over how many coats you need because the paint just comes out too streaky or splotchy.
The copper from Pro-Acryl is the best copper paint I've found. Potentially the best metallic paint. It is the only metallic that actually looks like the metal it claims to be straight from the bottle. On the model it doesn't look like paint, it looks like copper.
yeah love that paint! Always looking for a chance to put it on a figure, it is such nice color
Sorry for the long comment:
@@MasterShake9000 do you want paint that matches those hex pots?
I know who still produces something similar.
New painter but I also have to agree, Payne's Gray is a really nice navy/blue-gray
It'd be cool if you made a video putting together your ideal starter set with your preferred options from any brand that covers all of the color necessities for someone starting out!
Great suggestion!
I like their jade triad and their dark emerald.
Thanks for taking the time to share your experiences, will keep an eye on the wash when drybrushing!
@@GoufinAround_ great to hear I wasn't the only one.
So what is yalls favorite range over pro acryl then? Vallejo game color?
Excellent review. Thank you.
Great vid, great info and very useful. Cheers
Red Orange is the best resurection of old Blood Angel Red so far !
Please do more of those lists.
Dark Ivory is just amazing.
I'd be interested in your top 10 of Scale 75 Metal n Alchemy series
"sad tomato" - Chef's kiss.
Dark Magenta from ninjon's set is a very useful base for all kinds of things. It draws a great line to pretty disgusting pinks when missed with good old Vallejo Ice Yellow.
Great stuff friend 👏 👍 🤙
Royal Purple from VinnyV's set. Nuff said.
Can you do a Scale 75 review please? 🙏 I’ve been really impressed with their paints!
When the first paint on the list was the paint you found after years of looking that actually managed to pull off the armour you wanted on your first ever army, you know its an excellent list.
Please test Molotow One4All and Golden Acryics Highflow, Fluid and SoFlat also :) I love these ranges and I suppose you probably also :)
Great video
Finally someone who has the same opinion on Bold titanium white, it has its uses, but White Star and even AK Intense white are both better.
Would you mind sharing what those storage bins are for your paints? I'm drowning in paints and that looks like a nice solution.
They're called "Euroboxes", they come in various sizes and heights
My bold titanium white is incredibly thick. As in, I have to fully remove the lid to use it. I barely use it as a result and tend to favour FW white ink instead, but I also don't use a lot of white.
I use Heavy Titanium White from Matt’s signature series, in my opinion, it’s a little bit better than Bold Titanium White.
Deffenetly do this for all brands
I just want to question the (to me) incomprehensible hype that is generated around them, maybe encouraged by their social media strategy of promoting everybody that shares their products.
hey i love your paint swatches! any chance of doing some scale75 ones?
Not in the next couple of months (as I have other plans) but eventually I want to do them all!
It would be great if you could do this video for other ranges, and then do a personal “if you could only have these 10/20/whatever paints total from every range” which ones would you have.
I'd like to see your top 10 from Scale75, I've recently started using their range.
i had a problem with the cap of my bold titanium white and it doesnt close 100%, leading to the paint thickening up slightly. I bought another for thin applications and now I have a "heavy body" version for anything else :D
Do you have any guides to painting those Drukari?
Yes, here it is: taleofpainters.com/2016/07/tutorial-how-to-paint-dark-eldar/
any plans to discuss s75 paints and do swatches for them?
I'll soon do a swatch for their Instant Color range, but apart from that, not planned in the near future. Though eventually I want to do them all!
Super cool
With the change to Rhinox Hide that Squidmar pointed out, which paint, in your opinion, is closest to the original Rhinox Hide?
What's the best solid black in your opinion?
I like Pro Acryl Black, Vallejo Game & Model Color Black, and Warpaints Fanatic Black for something more satin
Please do more of these. Also why haven’t you covered Scale 75 or at least scale fantasy?
They don't answer my mails :D
@@stahly_taleofpainters is it cool if I ask the CEO myself on your behalf?
I like some of these paints but im absolutely lost how to use the bottles LOL. I poured a tiny bit out onto my pallet, closed the lid, and its just stuck now haha
is there somewhere we can order those grid swatches? I dont have a 3d printer.
Have you ever reviewed the AK Deep Washes? would like to see how they stack up vs Army Painter and Citadel washes.
Yes, check the channel!
sweet, will do.
Stahly: "Bold Titanium White isn't that good, because..."
Vince Venturella: "And this is why you're wrong!"
Great shirt, where did you see them? Saw them in Philadelphia and they rocked!
They came to Germany last year, saw them in Hamburg :)
can you make a TOP10 list of every paint brand?
Try to!
I look forward to reading your reply :)
Thanks you :)

Does anyone remember Tallaran Flesh? Stahly I’m still using it 😂

I just really wish we had a pigment list for all the colors ... is Pyrrole Red actually mono pigment?
Yes it is!
