    I love the answer Rock gives to one of Protoman's lines in I'm Not the Breakman.
    Blues: "If you're the one, my father's son, than what am i supposed to be?
    Rock: "Stop pretending you don't have a choice, only that can set you free."

    There was a local talent show that my friend and I turned this into a dramatic reading, philosophical debate between Rock and Blues. It ended with us turning out the lights to throw off the outfits we had been wearing while adding the "so, I guess there's only one way to truly make you understand.... ( the lights came back up for a moment as we quickly threw on colored hockey pads and had punching-gloves made to look like busters pointing at each other.

    I always interpreted the beginning of this song as Proto Man talking to Dr. Wily, asking him to change his ways from the path of evil he's chosen, telling him to "See the Light" again, and then the second half of the song Mega Man talking to his brother

    • @se7enist
      @se7enist 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I also thought this was a song from Protoman's perspective. I had interpreted the verse between Protoman and Megaman as being another occurence of Protoman trying to get Megaman to join the robot side. I see now it's not the case, but it was a fun interpretation while it lasted.

      I kind of feel like it Protoman wrestling with himself, while Megaman is fighting Gama. But, then the answers from Megaman don't quite fit. Perhaps it is Megaman thinking during the fight as well. The explosion at the end seems to indicate it is during the Gama fight.

    • @papershadow
      @papershadow 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      I very much hear lyrics that tell me it's Mega Man singing for POV throughout the verses. Among the references
      - Fly on a Dog includes Mega Man resigning himself to being "just another machine", something Proto Man similarly thinks of them both and tries to prod at Mega Man during both "I'm not the Breakman" and "Make Your Choice" (if you take Proto Man as the main singer of that vs Gamma interpretations)
      - The reference to his father (Light) having a dream, something brought up in "Wanna be the One (To Watch you Die)" where Light essentially condemns his idealism and resigns to Rock killing Wily (as he adamantly rejects in this song).
      - "Lamentations of a War Machine" had Rock sink to the point of wondering if he had any purpose but to kill, even if he did right by saving the world from Wily before. This song would essentially be his committing to the idea "even if I made mistakes, I'm not just a killer machine." Proto Man's closure with his past is moreso covered in "Melody from the Past" as well, this seems more the climax for Rock.
      - While "I'm Not the Breakman" gave an emotional look at his brother, the previous song "Make Your Choice" is where Rock gets a real look at Proto Man's philosophy and mindset as they both try to convince the other to stop before it comes to this fight. Proto Man lays out everything against Mega Man in the prior song, and this is his rebuttal to that.
      On the whole, the song feels crafted as Rock breaking himself out of the mental spiral he's been on throughout HR, refuting or verbally wake-up slapping Light (the father figure who inspired him to heroics in the first place) and Proto Man (essentially his antithesis, what he becomes if he stays on that spiral).

      @@papershadow I appreciate this take, as that was essentially my interpretation as well. Rock is standing as the last bastion of the dream Light Had, and is using that light to guide his fallen family back to where they belong. What really sells it for me is towards the end of the breakdown the "Does that mean no man or machine can learn from his mistakes? No man or machine is MORE than their mistakes?" SO GOOD.

    If there is any consolidation to Rock, in the not so distant future it is proved that Wily indeed could change! Wily eventually retired for real and the world finally turns into a peaceful one where Rock finally could live his days in peace as a family with Light and Roll...
    ....At least up until time travel shenanigans happen, past Wily somehow convinces future Wily to kidnap and reprogram the retired Rock into the killing machine Quint to fight off his past self, and then *every* single Robot Master in the future is destroyed by the Shadow of the Man Rock became.
    ....So there was hope, but history got rewritten into a way nobody wanted.

      It's hard to tell what became the final straw for Light, but at some point he became so sick of Wily's depredations that he began work on a successor to Rock. A robot who would be immune to Wily's reprogramming and viruses, a robot who would be able to, if absolutely necessary, make the choice to take a human life without being hindered by interpreting hard-encoded laws of robotics and instead relying on their own morality, which he hoped would be equal to if not better than Rock's for if he chose to be a villain, it was likely none could stop him. A robot built to choose what he would do without hardwired preconceptions or restrictions.
      A robot known by a simple designation, a variable upon history. The Magnum Opus of Thomas Light, a bright spark who would upend even Wily's enduring legacy of terror.

    Did MegaMan decide to end Wiley's life after this crisis of conscience?
    Him failing to end the chorus on "Believe" in the end indicates that he did, or at least intended to: "I will not kill... no I will!"
    Also in Melody from the Past Protoman says "If I was standing where you are, I think I would have done what father wants, but now I know what I'd become..."
    And it fits with the brutal way MegaMan is seen as from Protoman's perspective, when he says in I'm not the Breakman: "Sometimes I can't see the blue through the red [figurative blood on MegaMan's hands], hard to see the good through your trail of dead [the ones he killed along the way]."

    There is literally one thing holding back this song and I only now just thought of it listening to HR Pt. 2
    The two depressions Rock has before, ultimately make it weaker.
    History Repeating Pt. 2 showed us that despite his depression, Rock refuses to succumb and pushes on... And then Fly on the Dog happens and he's back to it. So it tells the audience that he's flip flopping between the two.
    So the fact he again breaks through, serves only to weaken the supposed impact it should have, because, at the end of the day he's most likely gonna fall back into it, or at least that's what could be inferred.
    Is it a bad song? Fuck no.
    But it's underlying message that Rock is free from his doubt, is weakened. Maybe not by a lot, but weakened regardless.
    Very good song tho.

    • @Fluffy56547s
      @Fluffy56547s 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      I've been thinking about this for a while, cause something about it ticked me, and I couldn't figure out why until today.
      The part I disagree with is how you reference History Repeating Pt. 2 as Rock refusing to succumb to his depression, and pushing on, but then immediately falls back into depression in Fly on a Dog. I don't think that's necessarily right. He's not beating anything in History Repeating Pt. 2, all he's doing is acknowledging that despite all he wants, he's the ONLY one who can do this. It's a direct result of his wish in I Want to be the One. Back then, he wanted to be the hero at the end of the day, before he realized that he IS the only one who can be, and that this WILL continue. He was so hopeful that the second time around would be the last time, that he never stopped to consider what would happen if it WASN'T the last time.
      This is represented further in both halves of History Repeating. He's not getting out of his depression, he's just accepting that he IS the only one who can end it. ("Today, I change the end"- "I know I can win, I've done it before") Fly on a Dog is just a continuation of his thoughts, how he actually feels, versus what he knows he has to do.
      To reach again into Get Equipped, he poses a question in the final song, Lamentations of a War Machine. "Was I right?" In Fly on a Dog, he re-iterates this "It was you who built this uncertainty." (There's a few more parallels between Lamentations of a War Machine and Fly on a Dog as well. If you compare them closely, Fly on a Dog is just a reiteration of Lamentations, with short drawn conclusions.)
      It's only after the events of Mega Man 3 that Rock comes to terms with his wish from I Want to be the One. And he finally has his answer for Lamentations.
      "Does that mean no man or machine
      Can learn from his mistakes"
      ...
      "I refuse to believe
      That we can't learn to see."
      ...
      "No I will - (believe)"
      He was right. By defeating Proto Man, he's already proven his point, anyone can change. That's why he can't kill Wily, because he knows, however unlikely it is, that there IS a chance for him. Rock's the ONLY one who can make this choice, just like he asked.
      "I want to be the one who fights for justice" - "(I've got to be the one)"
      He is the one who fights for justice.
      ------------------
      I hope that one day they do cover Mega Man 4, because I'd love to see their interpretation of the title theme. Whereas 2 ended with a somber credits theme and led into 3's somber title theme, 3 ends on a hopeful note, which is carried into 4's title theme. Rock's conquered his depression.
      "You are The One, the Hero who will stand."
      Just like his brother said.

      @@Fluffy56547s This is a very good comment.
      Rather than simply respond to the base of the comment you go above and beyond to explain the depth of each part of the songs and how they tie together.
      While I could argue my point, I don’t think there’s anything to actually say against it.

      HR .2 is about the general journey of having to fight over and over.
      Fly On a Dog is a direct response to I Want To Be The One (To Watch You Die) wherein Dr Light sent him out with order to _kill_ Dr Wiley, for what he did to Blues/Proto.
      This song isn't just about getting over depression, it's about rebuking both Dr Light and Protoman and telling the both of them to be better than their worst impulses.
      Protoman has to forgive Dr Light for 'abandoning' him by building a replacement son, and Dr Light has to accept that Blues coming back from the dead with a gun in his hand was more due to his own rage than Wiley specifically trying to use him as a weapon against Light.
      The song does feel cheapened though, not by Rock's previous depressions, but by the he's singing about refusing to kill Wiley , after having slaughtered his way through something like 20 Robot Masters by this point.
      Butchering your way through the big bad's soldiers but suddenly deciding that killing is wrong when faced with the source of all of the problems is a common issue with media that wants to be a cool action thing while also showing that killing is bad.
      It especially doesn't help given that we know that there's just going to be a History Repeating part 3 through 11, because Wiley will never stop being a huge problem. Not even in 100 years time.
      Rock can plug Dr Wiley right now, or he can wait two years for Wiley to churn out eight more robot masters that Megaman will have to kill his way through to confront the evil doctor all over again.

      @@iamnuff1992 in archie they all got rebuilt, but then chose to be shut down instead of denied their original purpose. Dr. Lights numbers were restored, half of two and three chose to stay online, but the others chose to die the final time. I guess you could say that it makes it more bittersweet, as in the comics, despite all the effort he went to in order to save them through the IC chips, Rock loses them anyways, and had to fight blues. In that story the song makes sense, but not in the mainline canon.

    Someone's been reading Archie Mega Man.

    • @papershadow

      Goes either way on that front. Early in the Archie run, Light gives Rock a motivational speech that lifts most of its lines straight from The Megas' "The Message from Dr. Light" in their first album, which predates the first issue of the Archie Comic by 3 years.
      Archie hit Mega Man 3 and Proto Man before HR: Red came out, so the inspiration being cyclical is possible. It's also possible they simply have similar visions for a fleshed out Mega Man story.

    I have an Idea.
    what if this is Protoman singing this? right before he leaves light forever? I'm pretty sure the normal theory is that its megaman but still some of these lines like "Now you want to burn the world, into the ground" and "I will not kill... No I will..." are clear indicators for this being Protoman for me but thats just me.

    • @convolutedconcepts
      @convolutedconcepts 7 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      but it's Mega Man. He's singing to doctor light, telling him not to lose faith in his dream. "Now you want to burn the world, into the ground" this is Mega Man telling Protoman that he has a choice, that's why he tells him "This rage is not your destiny" "I will not kill... No, I will..." this refers to Mega Man talking about how he won't kill humans but he will kill the robot masters.

      You can't just take part of a sentence and make it a whole new sentence. He's not saying "I will not kill...No I will..." as some sort of conflict, he said "I will not kill...No, i will BELIEVE". I don't know why you left that word out. Despite his father wanting him to end Wily, Mega Man has chosen to BELIEVE there's redemption for him instead of killing him.
      Just because they don't finish the sentence at the very end of the song doesn't mean they're saying an entirely different sentence. They're deliberately cutting it off there because they're implying that the sentence is ending with "believe" just as it has the entire song. Many MANY songs, just in general, do this all the time.

      Convoluted Concepts is right...it's all from Rock, but he's singing to Dr. Light in the first verse, and Blues in the second.
      WIthout going over the same points that CC brought up, the opening line in the chorus (I refuse to believe, that I'm nothing more than a machine) sings true to Mega just a bit more than Proto since Mega opened the album with his doubts that "I'm just another machine" in Fly on a Dog. Then, in the 2nd verse when he asks, "Is your song just lines of code, or is it something that you heard," he's referring to Proto's whistle tune or "the Red Song" as the Megas called it way back in Gamma Unchained (I know that I heard the Red Song again, it wants revenge).
      I like that the band doesn't really tell us who is singing each song and to whom, but some of them are more straightforward than others. I STILL haven't 100% figured out who is singing to whom in 'Continue' from HR:Blue! lol

    • @GeonXP89
      @GeonXP89 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @MarauderTwilight : well, I saw a comment about "Continue" saying it would be Light talking to Rock as to justify himself when sending him to kill the other robots, and that's the most likely theory I can think of.
      That could also be Blues singing to Rock, but I'm confused about "you turn and see them in the sand" (talking about steps) since Blues helped Rock get away from the fortress, thus Rock didn't "walk away" from there.
      Or it's someone singing to Blues. Now that I think of it, I have no idea who is singing to whom either, there are too many possibilities. The only thing I can tell is it's Rock/Blues/Light singing to Blues/Rock.
