Many moons ago, when I enlisted in the US Marines, the only group of military occupational specialties you could get guaranteed was the aviation group. Even then, you were just guaranteed to get one of the MOS's in that group, not any specific one. I didn't go aviation, so I ended up with what was (and still is) called open contract. You get an MOS that filled the needs of the Corps. I was made a truck driver. I did not enjoy the job, but after two years I was able to re-enlist into military police. I enjoyed that much more, but, the Corps always gets their pound of flesh. When I was later transferred into the 1st Marine Division MP Company, guess who got assigned as the company motor transport NCO? I still had my truck driver MOS and was a sergeant. How convenient for the Corps. These days the Corps is a little nicer about assigning MOSs to enlistees. But, being an MP gave me the guidance I needed for a civilian job and I became a cop for a career. Long retired now.
You can pretty much do any job in the military that you can do as a civilian... the military will not allow you do you’re job though.. take this from someone who had a trade then left the military.. it’s great to have the qualifications.. but if you don’t have the experience or skills that you practice on the daily you won’t stand a chance on civvi street... do yourself a favour go to college.. get the experience and believe me you will excel..
Great advice. I'm one of those that knew exactly what he wanted to do, but definitely sound advice for anyone who's on the fence between a couple of cap badges
Thanks Sam that’s really helpful. I’m currently on the fence between 3 cap badges - the infantry, rmp and intelligence corps and looking to join as an officer. A trip down to the career office is a definite now for more information now however still have a year or two to make an informed choice as I’m only in my first year of university doing security, intelligence and investigative practices
I wish those of us in the reserves had more choice of roles. Like for example with my unit, which is part of 165 Port & Maritime Regiment RLC, we only have a choice of 7 jobs. They are, •Mariner •Port Operator •Marine Engineer •Chef •HR Specialist •CMT •Operational Hygiene Specialist I can't swim, and hate being on water, so Mariner and Marine Engineer is a no for me. I'm really dyslexic and hate sitting down doing paperwork, so HR won't be for me. CMT, I don't think I could handle having that kind of responsibility. And Chef, I can just barely cook to save my life lol. I was hoping to do Op Hygiene after I was told I will have problems training as a Port Operator, as I don't have a driving licence, and it's hard to get one through the reserves. Since passing MOD3(phase 1) in February, I have been told from HQ I can only do Op Hygiene as a second trade. Just recently, my Staff has said they are looking to get me on a driving course, so I can then train as a Port Operator. But he doesn't reckon it will happen. I've decided today to ask him about doing the Chef's course, and if I can do Op Hygiene straight after.
@@MilitaryFitness yh, I'm thinking of doing it just to get a trade squared away. And hopefully gives me the opportunity to do op Hygiene. I think most of the guys would do infantry if they had the choice.
