Hi Shane - just bought K-Edge XL combo mount after viewing this video. Absolutely rock solid as you said. Didn't have any trouble mounting a Fly12 under the 1030. Oh and I'm with you, tilted up just a tad for visibility.... watts be damned. Cheers.
I just received to pieces to convert my mount for the GoPro style underneath mount. I am doing it mainly for a slick headlight install but a camera can go there too. Thanks for a well timed video and the heads up on potential problems. Thank you!
I have the red anodized K-Edge XL on my Ridley and absolutely love it. Your video helped me tremendously trying to find a well made out front mount for my Garmin Edge Explore with some room to spare. Thank you……Rob K
That wrench you used to try and spread the legs of the GoPro mount, wrapped with some fine sandpaper and a little back and forth would have done the trick!
I'm using the Rotor mount. It's light (33g + 14g for the GoPro adapter), looks nice, no problems using the GoPro mount out of the box and, most importantly, it's way way way cheaper. I paid 34 euros for mine. Oh, and it also fits the Edge 1000!
Such modifications shouldn’t be necessary especially at the premium price k-edge charges! Bought the small combo mount quite a long time ago to use my PowerPod and converted with the Wahoo insert to my Bolt.
Agreed. Hence why this isn't an advert for K-Edge. It's me pissing about with expensive gear trying to make it work... (which is what I should have called this channel) :)
This confirms my feelings, I thought I had a k-egde counterfeit . I bought K-edge once...and never again. At £55 plus, one should expect this to work first time. I now use the £6 adjustable Chinese one from wiggle which fits all my gopros and can take weight of a Cycliq 12 and an adapted exposure MaxxD light.
i've chalked up the tightness of the bottom mount, up to manufacturing tolerances. I have two of them, because I couldn't be hassled with taking it on and off to switch bikes, and they fit the lights that I fit underneath a bit differently. one is tighter than the other by a fair bit. but otherwise, its a great product. (it better be, considering how much they cost... but slightly better cost on ebay if you don't mind waiting for a deal). and as you mentioned, the k-edge mount will eventually wear out the plastic fins on your accessory unfortunately. I suggest taping around the surfaces too to avoid road grit from getting in and accelerating the wearing.
we are like twins Lama, I have been running the XL mount for years now based on running a 810 with my gopro. Now most often just a 520 with gopro but thinking about changing to a wahoo.
Hello Shane, I just picked up one of these myself in hopes of using it with my first generation gopro session, however I’ve run into a problem mounting it too. Have you heard of compatibility issues with the first gen? The holes simply don’t align for the thumb screw in any orientation. Close, but no cigar. Thanks for the video!
Hey Shane looking at biting the $$$ bullet on one of these but I read some negative reviews on Amazon's website. There are complaints about the bracket screws wiggling loose. One person said they thought Loctite SHOULD have been factory applied but did not indicate if they even tried using some to solve the issue. Another said the screws had sheared and that there was Loctite but could not loosen the screws (sounds like they used Loctite red - permanent). Unlike the Garmin out-front mount for my Edge 1030, my understanding is the K-Edge XL Combo does not use a rubber (silicone?) bushing and so mounts metal to metal on the handlebars and also is circumference specific i.e. my Specialized Tarmac bars are 31.8. Have you experienced any issues with the screws/mount coming loose or breaking off? BTW, thanks for all you do. Always great info.
Lama, coming back to this vid from your archive in hopes of solving a contemporary problem. Does the XL version of this mount provide enough space to run a USB-C cable to charge a Wahoo Bolt v2? Will be doing a 24 hr event and need to have a way to re-charge my Bolt. The standard mount from Wahoo doesn’t leave enough clearance between the face plate of the stem and back of the head unit to to run a cable from a battery in a jersey pocket.
Shane, a bit of advice please. I want to mount a Magicshine RAY 2600 light [right side-up] under and out front of a K-Edge mount using the GoPro mount enough to access the light's buttons. current head unit is a Wahoo ELMT v2. Note: because of the RAY 2600's light defuser, it can't be mounted upside down/inverted. Do you know of mounting hardware to do this? Would a plastic 3D printed mount be a good solution? **Happy New Year, sir and I am looking forward to the TDU
What i want is a light that can fit to the k edge like the go pro does. Or better yet why doesnt garmin or wahoo put a light on the front of the unit. Nothing to light a dark road, but something small like the knog mini. Personally hate the look of a front light mounted on the bars, but realise how much safer you are on busier roads, even on bright days
Battery limitations. I'd love a headunit with a 4k camera, light, GPS, all the things... but it'd need a battery the size of a bucket on the front of the bike.
There’s a company called ‘Grade’ I think they were called and they have made a bike computer mount that has an adjustable system so that you can fit multiple head units without the need to buy several mounts. I saw this on a bike but can’t find it available anywhere online.
probably going to strip the screw now that the brackets arent alligned now.. you think it being really tight and snug would be a good thing... idk why you loosened it.
Hi Shane, how stable is the gopro footage when on the extended outfrount mount? I have read reports that the longer k-edge gps/ camera mounts cause unstable video due to vibration. Thanks
I'm looking at doing long distance riding and looked at this mount for my Garmin 1030 & a light underneath. The issue I can see with this is I can't plug a USB cable in to the front of the Garmin charge port 'on the go' from my battery in a top tube bag to keep the Garmin charged on very long rides. I noticed in the diagrams that the mounting rings and under GoPro mount fasten to mount with bolts. Is it possible to flip the mount upside down and swap the Garmin mount/GoPro mount around or will they only go on one way? If this can be done then the Garmin would be lifted higher above the bar line which would not look as good but would allow me to charge the Garmin.
I'm 16,000km from this mount, so I won't be able to check this for a few days. Have you looked into 90 degree USB cable ends? I'll assume you're on an Edge that takes MicroUSB. A quick Google for '90deg microusb' comes up with a few options.
@@gplama wow, I didn't expect a reply that quickly. Awesome thank you. I have indeed already got a 90 degree microUSB yes which does currently fit with my standard Garmin out front mount. But it is tight. No rush though on getting an answer. Where ever you are, I hope you are having fun 👍
No, that's the junction box that was always there. I'll do a full re-cable of my Di2 when I can get all the right cables. It's going to be DrSLane level neat... (because he'll be helping me with that project) :)
But who'd have the pink one....? :) I've only stuck with GoPros. I've had a few camera companies contact me... then never deliver. So... I've stuck with purchasing GoPro.
Any issues with gps drop out when recording with a GoPro and wahoo bolt? When GoPro attached and not recording all is fine, as soon as I record video gps signal drops and doesn’t record data. Running default video settings currently. Any help appreciated.

It took Garmin a few tries to get the firmware right. I hated mine initially as the screen wasn't responsive, but issues solved with software updates and love it now. It still has annoyances tho - like how it turns on and boots up when you charge it, and you either have to wait for boot up to turn off, or leave it to burn its screen out. Thanks garmin.
@@sward5106 That is so annoying isn't it, they really have done a good job with the firmware updates to be honest, I had so many issues with routing it was unbelievable, such as going off course it would never find the course again... ever.... even if you rebooted, also not being able to see the maps with directions (something they removed from the 800), they added that back in, they did listen and they did fix it, but you do have to question some of the decisions they made for early on with the software and hardware design... and we are back to that screen again !!!!!
@@gplama Mind sharing how TH-cam values things like Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down, Shares, Subs, etc.? I actually don't know, and it might be valuable for scenarios like this, when it's not the creators fault.
The actual 'algorithm' is closely guarded by TH-cam. A few people/companies like VidIQ have done some neat testing. IIRC in a nutshell: TH-cam is all about engagement with watch minutes. Keeping eyes on the content and people engaged (so TH-cam can throw ads at them). 10mins is meant to be the sweet spot... This is why a lot of creators pad out videos to exactly or just over 10mins. Personally, I don't worry about this. I'll do a 45 second tip or a 50min Lama Drives - However long it takes for the idea/information I have to present. If people close a video right away after starting it, that's a bad thing. If lots of people do that, it's considered uninteresting and won't be promoted or bumped up by the 'algorithm'. Interactions such as likes/dislikes is pretty much the same. It's all viewer behaviour that determines how well a video does.... so it's all about good informative content. Click-bait works. Thumbnails that exploit the female form (or male too I guess) work. I try to keep clear of both. Subs wise... that's all about leverage. Especially for those who don't look at any other stat. If a channel has 275k subs, or 75k subs, guess who get's the brand deal. The real metric for me is engagement and reach. The cycling tech I cover is a niche, with that are ups and downs. Ups that the engagement is really really good. Very few trolls, people who hang around and watch the content, and who follow me on other platforms (Strava, Instagram, Twitter etc). It also means I don't get MASSIVE amounts of views or subs as I would if I was dishing out a ton of generic content on cycling.... for me that is not a niche, there's lots of channels out there pushing shittons of generic bike content. Some good, some great, some frickin' horrible. What works and what doesn't is a lottery. My CeramicSpeed video is sitting on 4.9 million views. Where as some really informative content about other tech is on 10k views. The good part about informational videos (even this one about the mount) is that they do pretty well for search based views. They're almost evergreen.... so will be a resource that'll tick along for a while. Daily 'vlogs' or events or point-in-time content goes stale after a week. Anyhow, that's my quick braindump on my understanding. In short, TH-cam is a tough place. Support all the creators that you like and who provide value.
@@gplama Thank you for a more than thorough thought/explanation to what is known about this. I really had no idea. To my understanding (assumption) I knew views counted, but I thought likes and dislikes were of equal value. This comes from the fact that some creators I follow encourage both likes and dislikes, so I never thought one was better/worse than the other. I'll keep this info in mind the next time I want to exit a video early. I genuinely want to "assist" the content creators I follow with views/likes/shares/etc., and knowing how to do it better is great. Thanks again for the explanation, and enjoy your new ride!
I'm hanging for channel memberships to be enabled on my account. It allows people to support me directly (if they want to) without having to farm people off to Patreon (after explaining what Patreon is, and why paying a 3rd party site supports someone on TH-cam). It'd be ideal if channel members weren't shown ads on the channels they pay for.... that'd be a great incentive. But... TH-cam... (oh, and memberships are for channels with more than 50k subs these days.. which I'm well past... but still no access... argh)
i have one of these mounts too. The initial camera mounting was tight, but its perfect now. no issues getting it in or out.

When all else fails, get a bigger tool!
Thumbs down for the poor product (not Lama's fault)....however, that turned to a thumbs up with the last 10 seconds of the clip! LOL!!!
I get people 'downing' the products or ideas... but that also sucks when it's the video/creator that is sunk when that occurs.
But... TH-cam... (oh, and memberships are for channels with more than 50k subs these days.. which I'm well past... but still no access... argh)
12+ minutes to show how a mount fits?
Sure. Welcome to TH-cam. 🤷🏻♂️
