    I recently purchased the 1040 solar & love it. At first I thought is it too large but quickly realised its not. It has great font size & so easy to read the display .. especially with my not to great eyesight.

    Ok cheers. I got the 840 - I need reading glasses and ride only with sunnies so I thought the 1040 would be better for its bigger size, but it looks just too big for me. 3xcited to get my new edge.

    If you don't need all the training bells and whistles you could also go for the Garmin Edge Explore 2. Bigger touch screen than the 840 for a lower price with most of the features. I've had mine for a couple of months and I love it.

      Accurate on both devices. But, the 1040 has a bigger screen, which makes selecting the target easier. Go with the 1040 unless you’ve spent all of your military budget on the pilots MARQ.

    What about adding ANT+ devices like AXS, hearthbeat monitor, etc.? What would be the battery life if I pair these Garmin's with a hearthbeat monitor plus my AXS system?

    • @Sportivecyclist
      @Sportivecyclist  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Whatever battery life I quoted is based on garmins intensive use scenario. I don’t think heart rate monitor and electronic gears integration is particularly challenging on battery life (versus screen brightness and the gnss satellite tracking).

    • @Sportivecyclist

      I'm months late to the party but go to a safety supply company and ask them about safety glasses with built-in readers. I've been using the Nemesis from Kimberly Clark for a few years now and they're perfect. Price can't be beat at about $10 and they're quite aerodynamic as well.

    I started with the 1040 solar and realize that it was hard to see on cloudy days with my Oakley Road on. I tried the regular 840 and found it too small for my taste. I went back and got the regular 1040 because it's a bit brighter and easier to see over the 840 and the 1040 solar.

      @@MatthewLenton update: Local Garmin dealer was supposed to have the 540/840 available by now so I went yesterday to pick one up but he had none so I asked him to show me the 1040. It’s on my bike now, mounted on the stem of my mountain bike using Garmin’s own mountain bike stem mount, which is similar to the road bike mount that comes in the box but reversed. The 1040 is exactly the length of the stem, a perfect fit. Loving it.

    After my second Garmin Edge 520 died unexpectedly I decided to try something different - the Wahoo ELEMNT Bolt instead of the Garmin 530. Boy! I'm glad I did. th-cam.com/users/postUgkxXZCtB-wGdHVTBSz8RswePK5vllHNi06N The display on the Wahoo Bolt is much easier to read. I like the configuration of the display more (up to 7 items visible on page 1 without scrolling and the first item chosen is larger characters than the next 3 rows that have pairs of items (still very readable). I also like the configurable item selections. The Bolt synced with my Garmin ANT+ Speed sensors on both bikes easily so no additional investment was required there. While the rated battery life is a couple hours less than the Garmin 520/530, I easily get a weeks worth of 1+ hour rides before recharging (and it's never really low on charge). At the end of a ride syncing to the Wahoo app, Strava, and Apple Health app is painless.

    I'm struggeling to decide, which device suits me best.
    I've got an Epix 2 and am wondering, if there is something in the Edge Computers, what the watch doesn't have?
    There is only the bigger display, right?!
    But with your recommondation of the 1040, your "answer" is clear - buy a additional device for cycling and use the watch for everything else, right?!

      @MatthewLenton 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I have the Forerunner 955 and the Edge 1040 Solar because it's easier to see the distance and time and also the map if I'm using it for navigation. The watch I tend to use for any non bike activities

    I ride a velomobile and as such, my bike computer will not see much sunshine. However, I do like the larger screen of the 1040, so the decision was easily made. I just don't like how Garmin artificially makes the solar version better in several ways. Add the protective sleeve and the extra memory... It is as if they know themselves that the solar bit is a bit of a gimmick. I completely agree with you that battery life is now so good throughout the range, that solar really does not add much. Unless you are on a cycling holiday and don't have access to a power outlet for a week, then solar begins to make sense.
