Jaco was the epitome of fretless bass guitarists. Always exciting, wildly quick and so, so beautiful! His harmonics were outta sight. One of a kind, gone way, way too soon. So happy to have recordings of him...thank you, Rick, for posting this beauty!

JACO....what can you say? I am forever left speechless most of the time I listen to him play. He now has 5,000,000 copycats, but nobody sounds even remotely like him in any way. Some of them get the notes but none of the soul and feeling and the magic of the sound he had. And they never will because they are not the man who created the sound and came up with the development of the astounding techniques of tone, muting, phrasing and other nuances about electric bass playing. Hearing him in 1978 in a small theater in my home town of Passaic, NJ was one of the highlights of my life as far as music is concerned.
Thank you so much, Rick for sharing this recording with all of us, who loved his playing and his innovations.

@@jonpaulagustsson9424 thank you for taking the time to read what I wrote. I may never see or hear another musical innovator like that in this lifetime. Seeing him up close for a 1978 Weather Report concert remains one of the most impactful musical moments of my life, for sure!!!

I saw him w/ WR in 81? Never heard a band fuckup a song so bad then recover it out of nowhere. Night passage. That in itself was impressive. Jaco's solo, he literally turned into a cartoon watching him it was so unreal. Learned later he was on the edge about that time.

So Jaco had Word of Mouth kind of starting back as early as in April 81. I know he toured a little with Weather Report that year and formed WOM in Dec. 81. Great stuff though, Love Word of Mouth!! I only wish he would have cut a "Domingo" and "Ballon Song" on the studio album. Man, can you imagine Domingo on the Night Passage album?

I miss Jaco so much. I saw him at here in Dallas Tango's (long gone now) in the mid 80's and I was 22 yrs old at the time. I was so fucking bummed when I heard he was killed. I remember the day, my friend called me and told me to turn to a certain page of the Dallas Times Herald. I went into a dark depression and stopped playing bass for a few months. He was a bass God to me because he had such a crazy break out of jail style. It's funny but that night I saw him I played against his drummer on an arcade game during a band break. The game was Pole Position and it was a close game, though I beat him. We both had a good laugh. His drummer was a short black dude-- I'm not tall at 5'10-- but fucking awesome when he was beating those skins.

This, is why I say that Jaco was one of the best of his, or any time on this instrument!
His inventiveness, his purposefully saying it in his own voice, regardless of "traditional" expectations, and the demand of his instrument to be heard as he played, is almost unchallenged!
There are many almost inhumanly skilled players, but Jaco, was like hearing a new language, for the first time, and never quite mastering the grammar of its written rules!

i really wish he had made a move to follow up word of mouth. It may have altered history and Jaco may even still be with us cause he wouldve been busy working and touring for that new album, there were other albums but i mean another solo effort his self titled, then word, then a pause and around 86 another solo effort or even gotten back together with pat metheny, peter erskine, michael stern in the studio anything... would love to see felix cut a solo album or with antonio forcione
