What you should learn from Kimi is to race from the butt of your seat. No need for endless track data, telemetry, simulators, etc. And no matter what, racing always comes first. Kimi's in F1 to just drive! I see him as one of the purest F1 drivers
It's taken a while for me to like Leo and Shakedown as much as other segments, but I realised that I always watch each one all the way through. Keep up the great work, Leo!
You nailed it, Leo. I'm impressed by you depth of analysis. There are tons of books written on the subject of organizational effectiveness. One of the key factors is dealing with outstanding talent. The short story is that you should always try to minimize the management of the tactics of brilliant people. They are so in-tune with the moment that they will sometimes pull magic out of the air. They see things that others don't. The best to do is to set the overall objective and sit back.
Hey, you actually do embody a little Kimi-ness, I have been a fan of Kimi since I was a little boy watching F1 on the TV, he's awesome and I'm glad he's getting his due this season with the sub-par Lotus. I watch you because of the same reasons I've always liked Kimi, you do your job of reviewing motorsports in a factual, no bull-shit way, you don't let subjective things or your personal taste get in the way of communicating, even if you do express them, you are worth watching, period.
That Kimi quote refreshes and brings a whole new light on the sport...finally, no more artifical diatribes from Lewis after the race...I don't doubt he feels that way, but it is delivered in a manufactured way. When Vettle or button say it, i belive them...doesn't seem like a rehearsed response. F1 needs Kimi, Glad he's back!
Leo embodies "kiminess". Great video love the Jones vs Johnson image in the background when talking about over management very witty. Keep doing it your way Leo it works.
Great video Leo! And to be honest you raised a few points that had never even crossed my mind very Interesting as usual! You sound like you have a bit of a cold, your voice has more bass than usual? Get well soon if that's the case.
i agree, its good to hear his (kimi) own reaction to all this: he doesnt see what all the hype is surrounding what he does, people just talk him up (mainly for his personality), thats why, as a relatively new follower to f1, i find it hard to see where he stands as i know how many people pretty much 'blindly' follow him
Your clear and continued lack of understanding appealed to my charitable nature and hence why I decide to help you further. I don't see it as wasted effort I see it as helping someone who is clearly groping around in the dark to see the light! Rather bizarrely though you are now straying off the original subject, it's almost as though you are conceding defeat, which is probably a good thing as now having realised that the result isn't everything you will be better able to understand the sport
you mean his car is class above the field...thanks for pointing that out. Just showed how great kimi is by being at the right palce at the right time where his car shouldn;t be
Leo, you speak like every line is the most important of your life! I'll have the fast delivery over a slow one any day, but you seem like you're about to explode some times. Just "cool" the delivery a bit and you'll be top-notch, imho.
Job well done SHAKEDOWN,Kimi bring's the cool character back to F1.He left on his own term's & he came back on his own term's & so now he'll drive on his own term's.
I think the Lotus team was just fulfilling their public broadcastable radio chatter quota. There are two channels in F1. Things the team don't want others to hear, and things that they will allow broadcasted. They are required to have a healthy dose of public chatter to give the viewers something to listen to. Way to read into it so much man.
LEO the Lecturer. Very good points and I hope some Bosses are watching and taking notes. BTW when are they going let you drive the delta wing so that you and give us your impressions?
A good example of overmanaging the talent, Canadian GP '97. DC called in for a percationary stop for blisters..when he says the car feels fine. It stalls twice in the pit from an overheated clutch. DC would have won that one. But Mclaren overruled him. 2005 Kimi fighting an epic flat spot, refuses to pit to just get points, tryint to hang on to his undrivable car and protect his victory, the front wheel explodes on the last lap.he carried on,that story will live on, That's a true racer.
Leo, completely understandable, I'm not blaming you or anything like that. I have the race downloaded so I'm hoping to hear all of this chatter. I've always been a Kimi fan because he seems like the "bad boy", so to speak, of F1.
Totally agree with your sentiment, but maybe the commentary is a bit one-sided... the "boys back in the shop" have their part and the driver needs to trust them to do their part, during practice, car setup, and the pits, and THEN let the talent lead the big event.
Everybody thought that Kimi got the 500 t-shirts that said "Leave me alone, I know what I'm doing" for the team members as a joke. But no, it was a reminder...
Kimi is just legendary. By the way if you guys or Leo himself might be interested... I think the story of the weekend was WTCC at Shanghai and the "I'm not talking to you" look that Menu gave to Muller after the race where Muller practically ruined both of their chances for the championship. Prick. From a ten time ice racing champion and a veteran of touring cars, I really can't wrap my head around the stuff he does on track. As if it's a brain deficite of some kind.
F1 is all the better for Kimi's against the grain antics. A certain breed of 'old skooler' loves his attitude. And Leo, I like the cut of your jib. Keep it up.
well said. i dont even want people talking to me playing f1 on ps3 lol. i dont need distractions while trying to make my braking points and getting back on the throttle properly to avoid wheel spin when exiting a corner. imagine what it must be like for kimi in a REAL f1 car with engineers in his ear bugging him when the pressure is really on
With what one race the last race, that was the only race Massa gave was the last race. unlike the Alonso-Massa tandem where Massa is letting ALonso pass like he is a back marker in likehalf of the races this year, get your facts straight wins is plural if you don't know.
you apparently missed the message of 'trusting the talent' as the emphasis in his analogy. it has nothing to do with the similarities of the actual sport. i assume you dont quite grasp the concept of an analogy lol
I thought it was fantastic! When i first heard it, i had to back it up because its not what we are used to hearing. I laughed it was great. Ive been waiting for a Lotus win all year. I wish i was going to Austin next week.
I DID forget to post my opinion - WRC vs FD1 relevance. Although Dodge WILL be bui8lding a 4WD Dart ala Pastrana's ride, I think more relevant roadcar tech is coming from F1 - [in no particular order and certainly not a complete list] - Electronic controls, battery improvements, aero, materials, engine tech, drivetrain tech, suspension tech, safety data, tire tech.........
It's the secret of all successful business. You can't do everything yourself so find great talent or train great potential and place them in key roles and evaluate them from a distance. A professional doesn't need to be babysat and a real leader shouldn't have to delegate every single minute.
in 2007 kimi in ferrari lost more points because car than lewis, + when hamilton drive to sand when he was going to pit stop, he could just drive slower so its not ALL because mclaren
Some of you may "yap" and stick to a blinkered narrow minded view - only accepting what they can see, in the mistaken belief that the result is everything, whereas others can benefit from being able to accept the bigger picture and understand all of the variables involved here. Greatness in a driver is NOT defined by race wins, pole positions or fastest laps alone, that is merely a measure of success. Sadly that's also where Mr Vettel gets it wrong...
I think Mike and I have pretty good banter when we get together. And I am up for the challenge that IS Alex Roy! Maybe someday. And ANY of the other /DRIVE guys....Even in their areas of expertise [Hell, I'm older than most of the cars Musto finds. Maybe Chris will share a few track laps with me. etc., etc..] .
"Greatness in a driver is NOT defined by race wins, pole positions or fastest laps alone, that is merely a measure of success. Sadly that's also where Mr Vettel gets it wrong..." Good on you, Leo! This was a good presentation.
Thank you Leo for the Kimi translation because I would have never gotten all of that out of it. Thumbs up
You nailed it, Leo. I'm impressed by you depth of analysis. There are tons of books written on the subject of organizational effectiveness. One of the key factors is dealing with outstanding talent. Well put Leo! Keep doing what your doing, the shakedown faithful love it.
That Kimi quote refreshes and brings a whole new light on the sport...finally, no more artifical diatribes from Lewis after the race...I don't doubt he feels that way, but it is delivered in a manufactured way. Hey LEO, good show like always. I enjoy watching Shakedowns.
Great Job as Always Leo!
Perfect! Thank you for getting the message.

Keep up the great videos Leo.
Great video Leo, and you are 100% right
you mean his car is class above the field...thanks for pointing that out. Just showed how great kimi is by being at the right palce at the right time where his car shouldn;t be
Awesome. Great interpretation and message!

Real Shakedown is back!!
Great job Leo! Keep it up. Loved this one.
Leo,
Very well put. In the techno racing age, pure drivers like Kimi and Fernando just want their actions to speak for themselves.
I think the Lotus team was just fulfilling their public broadcastable radio chatter quota.
There are two channels in F1. Things the team don't want others to hear, and things that they will allow broadcasted. They are required to have a healthy dose of public chatter to give the viewers something to listen to.

Great show Leo!
LEO the Lecturer. Very good points and I hope some Bosses are watching and taking notes. BTW when are they going let you drive the delta wing so that you and give us your impressions?
first video i of yours i enjoyed and watched to the end... maybe cause it was short, maybe because you really hit a good point.
is this the most popular shakedown to date
Thank you Leo!
As always a great show but the lights in the studio seemed a bit too dark to me compared to your earlier videos.
A good example of overmanaging the talent, Canadian GP '97. DC called in for a percationary stop for blisters..when he says the car feels fine. It stalls twice in the pit from an overheated clutch. very good episode....as always
And great finish :-)! I always enjoy your fact based shows!
At first I thought this video was about Kimi. Nice job, Leo.
Let me know if you're ever out in Vegas, I'll go do some laps either at LVMS or in Pahrump with ya!
Good on you Leo, you just keep on keeping on mate.
Leo, completely understandable, I'm not blaming you or anything like that. I have the race downloaded so I'm hoping to hear all of this chatter. I've always been a Kimi fan because he seems like the "bad boy", so to speak, of F1.
For gods sake there is no hidden meaning behind what Kimi says!! Stop trying to find something that isn't there!!
Charli Hicks oh yes there is. Be sure of it!
gotta love kimi's character. doesnt give a shit about anyone else, is just there to drive
Hopefully Drive will be in Austin, TX next weekend?
On point today Leo. Get-R-done!
"Your awesome again Leo" Way to go mio fratello!!! You have been there and done that so can be over confident
Love what you are doing Leo
Totally agree with your sentiment, but maybe the commentary is a bit one-sided... the "boys back in the shop" have their part and the driver needs to trust them to do their part, during practice, car setup, and the pits, and THEN let the talent lead the big event.
Why is this video blocked for other devices like my TV?
So boss, the absolute best!!! i love everything about this legend
I'm sure kimi would say "Shut the fuck up" to this...
Kimi needs to write a book someday.
it was about focus I think. he ones said when he was at mclaren: "don't talk to me while in the middle of the corner."
Everybody thought that Kimi got the 500 t-shirts that said "Leave me alone, I know what I'm doing" for the team members as a joke. But no, it was a reminder...
Kimi is just legendary. By the way if you guys or Leo himself might be interested... Best shakedown yet...
F1 is all the better for Kimi's against the grain antics. A certain breed of 'old skooler' loves his attitude.
And Leo, I like the cut of your jib. Keep it up.
Leo, you're the best. No B.S. with you unlike some of Drive's other presenters. But, seriously Drive, no rights to broadcast the radio broadcast?
I only watch Shakedown. If I watch anything else, it's only because I've come to catch up with Shakedown.
well said. i dont even want people talking to me playing f1 on ps3 lol. i dont need distractions while trying to make my braking points and getting back on the throttle properly to avoid wheel spin when exiting a corner. imagine what it must be like for kimi in a REAL f1 car with engineers in his ear bugging him when the pressure is really on
Leo, what is your job again apart from Shakedown again? I'm not sure I understood what you meant.
yes Leo, you definitely know what your doing!
With what one race the last race, that was the only race Massa gave was the last race. unlike the Alonso-Massa tandem where Massa is letting ALonso pass like he is a back marker in likehalf of the races this year, get your facts straight wins is plural if you don't know.
Love it, and understand. Kimi fan, right here!
i liked that last bit about you and your job on drive, people criticize you way too much acting like they have the experience you do xD
you apparently missed the message of 'trusting the talent' as the emphasis in his analogy. it has nothing to do with the similarities of the actual sport. i assume you dont quite grasp the concept of an analogy lol
Awesome Leo.
Nice. :). Kimi made me laugh the whole race. Especially his winning interview with David Coulthard.
I thought it was fantastic! When i first heard it, i had to back it up because its not what we are used to hearing. I laughed it was great. Ive been waiting for a Lotus win all year. I wish i was going to Austin next week.
Hey, what car is in the thumbnail of this video? Is that the GT5 X1?
Kimi would be like: "I don't know about giving a life lesson and uh the team was repeating the same things so I told them to stop. "
*Very late reply. . . "Don'tKnowAboutGivingUhhh A lifeLessonAnd uhh theTeamWasRepetingTheSameThingSoItoldThemToStop"
I DID forget to post my opinion - WRC vs FD1 relevance. I do not know. Other /DRIVE vids or just this one?
Leo killed everyone's hateful comments at the end.
That's why you're my favorite Leo. Like a boss!!
Leo you are great!
Leo... You're the best. I agree with everything you said.
just 5 minutes? nooo give us more of Leo's lessons!
Shakedown's the best thing on drive, and theirs only one Leo Parente.
It's the secret of all successful business. You can't do everything yourself so find great talent or train great potential and place them in key roles and evaluate them from a distance. A professional doesn't need to be babysat and a real leader shouldn't have to delegate every single minute.
yes, but you cant deny that car was a monster, its widely regarded as one of the fastest ever, along with the ferrari f2004
Thanks mate.
ill wait till later in the year to cast my judgement about the team-mate rivalry, i cant put him in that group myself, but fair enough.
Hes the hero we need, but not the hero we deserve.
in 2007 kimi in ferrari lost more points because car than lewis, + when hamilton drive to sand when he was going to pit stop, he could just drive slower so its not ALL because mclaren
Who does these subtitles? Do they even listen to what's being said at all?
Life lesson for sure! See it everyday at work lol. Just leave me alone and let me do my job! :)
Leo you're a legend!!!
Kimi is the best... mainly his comments...
Well played, sir.
yes, but im just saying that the car was extremely fast, not that he was just faster than everyone else.
THANK you........
Yeah but look at how his race finished compared to Kimi's. To finish first, first you must finish. (And be Finnish!)
What's the song at the end?
Kimi is as close to Lauda and Hunt in modern F1 as you will get. They knew what they were doing too.
call kimmi for an interview
I think Mike and I have pretty good banter when we get together. And I am up for the challenge that IS Alex Roy! Maybe someday.
And ANY of the other /DRIVE guys....Even in their areas of expertise [Hell, I'm older than most of the cars Musto finds. Maybe Chris will share a few track laps with me. etc., etc..] .
What the hell was that rant at the end all about?
"Greatness in a driver is NOT defined by race wins, pole positions or fastest laps alone, that is merely a measure of success. Sadly that's also where Mr Vettel gets it wrong..."
Polite answer: Much talent is required to be a three times world champion which suggests greatness.
/PC Filter Off: You're talking bollocks...
I was told by /DRIVE, "No"...... Not even just the audio. That's what I was told.
It was an inherited win, a victory for underachievement nothing more.
