  • Celestron goto telescopes that use NexStar have a feature called Precise Goto which is way more accurate than "regular" goto. If you want to find a faint object like Neptune or a galaxy such as M51 then you probably would like it to be centered in the eyepiece after the goto. With Precise Goto you can do this.
    Visit Cloudy Nights. They have a very active NexStar forum where you can get answers to any NexStar question, usually within just a few hours.

    This is so old, but it’s so useful for me. I don’t think anyone else lays out this scope as simply and slowly as he does. I’m so glad to be able to learn from him.

    I've see this before on the hand controller but had no idea what it really was. This is awesome. It's just what I need for finding objects that I cant normally see in my cameras viewfinder. Thank you sooo much!!!

    I wanna give a tip to anyone who needs help finding the star for the precise go-to do your star alignment first after you finish use the controller to find that star when you find it and go to the star center the star in the eyepiece then go to the menu and use his steps you will already be on the star near your object if you're not familiar with the Stars or unsure where the star is.

    THANKS FROM A NEWBIE. A nice feature that is completely undocumented in the delivered LCM instructions manual. Seems like a lot of GoTo handset options are undocumented. Any idea why? Is there some kind of companion guide Celestron wants to sell?

      @wwgeb  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      testodude Thanks. I found Precise Goto in the manual for the NexStar 5SE. The 5SE has a built in wedge so you can tilt the mount for equatorial use. The manual for the 5SE talks about "wedge align" which was removed from the firmware years ago. You can instead use All Star Polar Align (ASPA) on the SE scopes but their manual doesn't mention it. You can learn about ASPA from the manual for the CGEM (or a video I made about it). You might want to download some manuals for other scopes to see what else you might have and not know about. Apparently Celestron needs to update their manuals. You might find NexStarSite.com useful.nexstarsite.com/Manuals.htm

    Does the telescope automatically move to follow the object ?

    • @wwgeb
      @wwgeb  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes. There are 3 different tracking rates: solar, lunar, and sidereal. Once you've aligned the scope it will track to take out Earth's rotation.

    To align my telescope I use auto 2 star but for some reason every time I do it even if the scope is looking at empty space it says align success when it didn't align correct, so how do I know if I aligned it correct when I do make it look at a star?

    • @wwgeb
      @wwgeb  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +TheFlamingGaming I guess the proof is in the pudding. Try a few gotos to see how accurate they are. I get consistent results with auto 2 star align. I suppose every once in a great while I might align on a wrong star and then the gotos will be bad.

      I agree entirely! I've had an astrophoto rig for two years, and I still can't figure out the GoTo in my new Celestron, having the same accuracy problem as you described. I wish I could have found a solution, but haven't had such luck, but it isn't fair to you for people to simply dismiss you saying you're not doing it right. Best of luck to you!

    • @tubedude54
      @tubedude54 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know the Q is now 2 yrs old but I will relate my experience with this problem with my 15 yr old Nexstar C11. I can't remember where I either read or heard this but it seems the 'problem' was in the initial orientation of the scope before you hit 'align'. My C11 has a vertical toggle that you can hear click when you tilt the scope horizontal and continue tilting it downwards. When you hear it click you stop and lock the declination axis. Now you are supposed to turn the scope so it points North (mag) as best you can and then push 'align' on the control box. (The manual never mentions pointing to mag North but this was a 'solution' offered by people trying to get a better initial alignment and does seem to get you closer to the first alignment star) It then uses an internal electronic compass and ties that to the GPS data and slews you to a star and you make final adjustments to center it in the eyepiece. If your guesses for horizontal or North are off the star it slewed to will be off... sometimes a few degrees! I suspect this is because of the variation of magnetic North from true North which could be up to 20 degrees or more. I never had a problem because this is where knowing the sky comes in handy for me and would just use the finder to finish slewing and then the scope eyepiece for final adjustment to the star in question. I don't know whether Celestron is still using this method of aligning because I remember Meade sued Celestron saying their method was proprietary and Celestron was copying it and Meade won. I think this spawned the CPC line of mounts which aligned the scope differently somehow. So it seems that Celestron may still be using magnetic North as part of the orientation... I don't know at all. I do know that my hand controller is so old it doesn't even have 'precise goto' in it! LOL

    Where do I get the codes for the galaxies? Thank you

    • @wwgeb
      @wwgeb  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Some of the most visible galaxies are Messier objects such as the Orion Nebula. It is M42. You can search for a list of Messier objects. There are 110 of them. You can also search for NGC galaxy. NexstarSite has a list too. www.nexstarsite.com/NSOL.htm

    Eh sent my 5SE in for servicing wanted to make sure there isn't anything wrong with the mount to me it acted kinda weird about a month after I bought it brand new was thinking maybe the gears were slipping or something else but if they find nothing wrong with the mount i'll be a happy camper but it cost me $80 to ship to Celestron ouch!

    My NexStar+ has different buttons. Also, I know that the Menu > Tracking options on mine don't have Precise GoTo; there is Alt and EQ. I'll dig around but I'm pretty sure that mine still has the Precise somewhere.

    you don't need a Finderscope if you have GoTo?

    • @WarmWeatherGuy
      @WarmWeatherGuy 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It helps to find stars for initial alignment. After that you rarely need a finderscope. I did use a 7x50 finderscope once to find Uranus. There were no bright stars near Uranus which meant that precise goto didn't get me close enough. -- wwgeb

    So, after doing this, would it be more precise for all celestial bodies, or just the galaxy you are looking at?

    • @wwgeb
      @wwgeb  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is a one time thing. If you instead use Sync on the bright star near your galaxy then all gotos in that part of the sky will be more accurate.

    Will this work GoTo's with a NexStar system but aren't NexStar OTA's?like the LCM series?

    • @wwgeb
      @wwgeb  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Sotiris Krol I just read the manual for the LCM scopes and didn't find Precise Goto. Yet I know that the manual for the SE scopes doesn't mention All Star Polar Align and the firmware does have it. So there is a precedent for having more than the manual shows. I guess you will have to look to see. If you need to know without first buying one then ask on the NexStar forum on Cloudy Nights.

    Quick question from a wanna-be-beginner: If I use GoTo telescope and set the to a specific target via the remote, lets say a star or other deep sky object, does the telescope move according to the earths´rotation so I can take long exposure photos?

    • @WarmWeatherGuy
      @WarmWeatherGuy 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes but... It will take out the Earth's rotation as best it can but not perfectly. For perfection you need an auto-guider and a mount that will accept input from the autoguider and the mount needs to be equatorially mounted. If your mount is alt/az then you can't auto-guide and you will suffer from field rotation if doing multi-minute exposures. Check out the forums on Cloudy Nights for better advice.

    How wonderful and useful! (Not that I can see anything but the Moon and 5 stars here in Concord CA ... ) I have a Celestron NextStar 127slt it is a 5" Maksutov Cassegrain and almost completely, useless... The $50 LPR filter I bought is basically useless... I wonder if I sold everything I own to buy a 16" OTA, it would show more stuff here in my light polluted area inland of San Francisco. Any help greatly appreciated!

      Ill say this. I have both the 4SE and the 8SE. I can see 95% of the same objects in both from my suburban backyard, they are just brighter in the 8, but only fractionally so. It is not a miraculous difference. Light pollution is the bane to any scope. I stick to brighter objects unless I go to a darker sight.

    • @WarmWeatherGuy
      @WarmWeatherGuy 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am not familiar with the skywatcher controller. My guess is that it has something like "sync" which accomplishes the same thing. The NexStar hand controller also has sync. You have to choose/find/goto a nearby star and then sync on it. Then you do a goto to the object you are looking for. All gotos in that part of the sky will be more accurate after doing the sync.

  • @johnmusser3753

    Is this to be done INSTEAD of the 3- or 2-star alignment (after aligning finder scope with view in eyepiece) or *after* and *in addition to* the 3- or 2- star alignment? Thanks for the tips and tutorials! Your vids are *very* very useful! :)

    • @wwgeb
      @wwgeb  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      John Musser This is to be done after the 3 or 2 star alignment. You do the initial 3 or 2 star alignment once and then you can do Precise Goto as many times as you want after that. Another related feature is "Sync." You can Sync on a bright star and then all your regular gotos will be more accurate in that part of the sky.
