I have one of these Mausers, I used to tell my friends it felt like it shot laser beams because of how accurate it is. It's insane to think this was the first mag fed rifle to use smokeless powder cartridges. How they were able to pull off such tight tolerances on a mass produced military rifle over 100 years ago is truly impressive. And yes, this thing is a joy to shoot, ammo is just scarce and expensive.
My Grandpa bought the one I now have about 1960, it is in excellent condition, but he replaced the rear sight with a Lyman peep sight mounted on the end of the receiver to improve his accuracy as he was in his 60's. Love shooting this gun, but it recoils harder than the 1909 Argentine short rifle that I also have. The craftmanship of both rifles is so much better than later Mauser's like my 1912 Venezuelan one. It is easy to form 7.65x53 brass from 30-06 brass. Just trim about 3/4 of the neck off the 30-06 case and run them through a 7.65x53 sizer die without the neck expander in and then do a final trim for length or you can buy a trim die from Graf's. If you load for the 1891, cut back your powder about 2 grs. because of the older style action.@@xMrPaintxx
Wow ,, I really enjoyed this video. My uncle, who was an avid gun collector, passed this 1891 on to me. I've Owned it for 25 years, kept it in a case up in my bedroom closet. I shot it only a few times when I first got it. My uncle apparently didn't like the fact that ammo was scarce for this rifle so he had it re-barreled to 308W. ( not sure that was the reason ) 308W is clearly marked on the top of the barrel near the sight. My version has several different serial numbers though. B4779 at the bolt, C6169 on the removable clip, another one on the wood stock. Mine doesn't have the elevation flip up rear sight. Your videos have caused me to gain interest again in this "old girl" Thanks so much and I look forward to seeing it shoot 1000 yards. Ted in Sebastian, Fl.

Ive got a 1895 Chillean german mauser that was in the boer wars of south Africa I shoot 7mm mauser with mine. Very nice rifle! Takes up lots of room with the bayonett attatched. Loved your video
Unexpected SPANISH INQUISITION shoot at smaller targets that always helps me when I'm having an off day. Start with apples at 100yards and work down to dumdum suckers. Then increase distance. I shoot dumdum suckers at 150 and sometimes 200 yards with my savage 17hmr all the time it's tons of fun and a great way to dial in your accuracy
It looks like there’s a very light gusting breeze from right to left. At that range, small changes in the wind speed between shots could explain the 6” off the plate here and there.
I just built a 1891 Argentine I put in a Boyd’s atone stock with first focal plane vortex scope and a swagger bipod love the gun it was my dads and has been sitting in safe for years finally decided to up grade it. Love the videos guys keep up the good work.
I had an 1891 7.65 when I was a young man. The action was in the white. Ammo was darn near impossible to find, but I did manage a box of Norma which was expensive. I think mine was shorter though.
I have my dad's 1891 that was semi-sporterized. He bought it from a hardware store in the late 50s. Neat old gun. Going to try to harvest a deer with it thus season. Norma & Hornady hunting loads. Thanks men.
has almost the same ballistics as .308 so while you can make 1000yds aimed shots anything longer is meant for volley fire (all rifles lose accuracy once the bullet drops below supersonic speeds because the unpredictability of the burble)

When you go out to 1000 could you throw in a 'how to' segment about getting those sights set to the specific distance one is shooting? That would help me defeat that 800yd nemesis of mine... No. Semi-automatic rifles existed in the 19th century, as did lever- and pump-action rifles, all of which can be fired much faster than a bolt action rifle.
I just got one of these beauty's and I love it is the any way to mount a scope without removing the original sights just something simple without to much modifications about 2 or 300 yards for varmints and coyotes
The aesthetics of full wood stock, bolt action military rifles cannot be beaten. They can definitely reach out there with their robust build, stabilizing full stock and long barrels.
My girlfriends grandpa told me stories last night of him qualifying with an 1891 back in the service and then deer hunting with it after he got out. He hasn’t shot it in decades, took the bolt out for storage years ago and has since misplaced the bolt. Hoping I can find him a bolt for it, and some rounds and see if he wants to take it out and shoot it again!
Sorry i just need to correct you @jouba potgieter the SMLE was called the no1 mk3 and the gun used in ww2 was the no4 mk1 and each of them had different systems of operation like the no4 mk1* you remove the bolt differently
James Poitra I had a 2 groove variant of that rifle that someone had “sporterized” and it shot like a champ. I never tried it at that kind of range though.

To make this rifle shoot properly you have 2 or 3 issues to think about, you don't have real service ammo, the original was a 220gn rn bullet, because of that the barrel have a large troath, in 1909 the most part of this rifles were "refurbished" for the new Spitzer ammo, so the table of the rear sigth was replaced with another, with the new ballistics. and your rear sigth looks like the older ones. Despite of this, you two made very good shots
I have one of those with matching numbers and a bayonet. I also have a Peruvian carbine that the same bayonet fits om. Both are 7.65 argentine. I love these guns. I even took the carbine bear hunting. Didn't get one, but I sure scared it after shooting the log it was standing on. I like that privi partisan ammo.

Great video. The old privy partisan has taken a bit of a dive since I first bought some 5 or 6 years ago and doesn't give rest groups in my 308 had a few duds in a few boxes too. Enough to not use it for hunting put it that way. I'm sure this old rifle will shine if you get the load right. Makes me want to get into these old rifles

Back when a shooter was really able to shoot these ol rifles were quite able to reach out and hit what was in sight Handloading building the right combo will show you the real capabilities of old world craftsmanship My old 303 British wouldn't shoot a group till I got cast bullets sized to the bore after that it was good for a 3 inch group at 250 yards that was the best my eyes could do !! The load was a mild easy to enjoy shooting the surplus ammo wasn't worth the pain of pulling the trigger for accuracy the steel buttplate made sure you were bruised

I've had my Argentine Mauser since before your last video on the rifle and I still haven't fired mine even once, there is a small pit in the barrel towards the muzzle and I'm a little nervous about it
safety wise a small pit isn't anything to worry about as long as everything else about the rifle is right (no shadow rings in the barrel no unusually swelling of the steel and the bolt locks correctly) it can have a slight impact on accuracy if it shaves brass off the bullet jacket but that is doubtful. shoot it only if you feel confident nothing else is wrong with the gun. personally? Id shoot it just to find out what I have (assuming everything else feels right).

Bayonets, engineer didnt use them, they had picks and shovels already.

I put a small dot of yellow paint at the top of the front sight on my Argentine 7.65. It seems to help me.

The duds weren`t Norma were they , Iv`e had Normas that had to be run 2-3 times before they would fire , obeying the 60 second rule of course.

They dropped like a rock after about 300 yards but if you compensate you can really reach out with this gun.

If it really worries you, take it to a gunsmith and let them give it a once over. It wouldn't hurt to do that with any old firearm purchase.
