"The first time I ever really listened to Kyle Kulinski’s show was in the back of a cab last summer. The driver had his phone hooked up through the stereo and was pumping out an episode through the car speakers - loudly, as if looking to convert a captive audience.
“Do you like Kyle Kulinski?”
The driver, Ahmed, was a recent immigrant and apparently a die-hard fan of Secular Talk, the political talk show that Kulinski broadcasts on TH-cam. I told him, yes, in fact. I do like Kulinski, had come across his show several years ago, and, all things considered, he seemed pretty good.
“He understands what we’re up against,” Ahmed said. “Like Bernie.”
But I was surprised to hear Kulinski’s name mentioned in the same breath as Bernie Sanders, particularly with such adoration. Because what I did remember about Kulinski’s show struck me as mostly capital-P “progressive” takes on the news - the left wing of the Netroots crowd more than the democratic socialism Sanders has popularized.
It’s an impression that wasn’t entirely incorrect.
“I have no time for philosophical, airy bullshit,” Kulinski tells me from his home in Westchester, New York. “I don’t want to hear about Lenin. I don’t want to hear about Marx. I just want a super plainspoken, straightforward agenda with a straightforward way of selling it.”
With over 800,000 subscribers and nearly 670 million total views on TH-cam, selling a progressive agenda is clearly something Kulinski knows how to do - even Democracy Now, the long-standing flagship of progressive media, cannot match his reach on the platform. Chapo Trap House can certainly boast a wildly devoted fan base (and a not insignificant degree of media influence), but their audience is roughly half the size of Kulinski’s.
While Secular Talk might be more likely to be looped in with the progressive networks around Air America and Pacifica alums like Sam Seder than the more resolutely socialist world, Kulinski’s fiery rhetoric, razor-sharp class instincts, and knack for withering takedowns sets him apart from his peers. Judging by his rhetoric alone, he’s closer to a Eugene Debs than a Chris Hayes.
But unlike Hayes, Amy Goodman, or his friend Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks - who began airing Secular Talk on his web network seven years ago - the thirty-two-year-old Kulinski is virtually invisible in the mainstream media. Despite his enormous fan base, his show has never once been mentioned in the obligatory trend pieces on “the Millennial Left” pumped out by the prestige media. Nor has Kulinski’s name ever popped up at all in the New York Times, Vox, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, or the Washington Post, despite his leading role in cofounding Justice Democrats, the organization widely credited with sweeping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of “the Squad” to power.
Just last week, his Wikipedia page was deleted. The reason? “There is very simply no [reliable source] coverage of this person,” according to one moderator. In new media, he’s king - the Sean Hannity of the Berniecrat left. In old media, he’s nobody.
I suspect there are a few reasons for that. There is nothing “cool” about Kulinski’s show. (As a friend put it, “‘Welcome to Secular Talk’ sounds like something you’d hear on Egyptian radio.”) His no-nonsense social-democratic politics won’t get him much cred with the Full Communism crowd. He records his show not in Brooklyn or Los Angeles, but in a studio he built himself in his modest Westchester home. His hair is too groomed and his taste in clothes too preppy to qualify as “Dirtbag Left.” Nor has he ever attended an n+1 release party. “Not only have I not attended one,” he says, “I have no idea what that means.”
And yet he’s astonishingly plugged-in for a young man in the suburbs. Wondering how Sanders ended up on the Joe Rogan Experience? Kulinski, a frequent guest on Rogan’s wildly popular show, introduced them. “You make the most sense to me,” Rogan told Kulinski on a recent episode. “You’re a normal person.”
Much like Sanders himself, Kulinski’s show has a massive audience that just doesn’t compute with our media’s understanding of “what the kids want” or even “what the left-wing kids want.”
It’s probably for the best - the very woke and very WASP-ish decorum haunting much of the media world is nowhere to be found in Secular Talk. “Corporate Democrats over-focus on identity as a trick to divert you from the issues that unite us all - class issues,” he said on a recent episode.

I’m an Iranian and I live in D.C. and we know her. She hangs out with the son of the overthrown Shah all the time in D.C. and she is trying to make him happy. People of Iran know how these people think. The way they think is that if they are not ruling Iran then they don’t care what happens to it or let’s take Iran back no matter who we sell it to and don’t care what people want. Shah is not a popular figure in Iran specially among young people who are fighting to change the government. A bunch of rich and loud Iranian people in the U.S. make themselves look much more popular than they actually are in Iran. These are just vultures thinking of ruling over people as their inheritance.

Was literally just going to say this, I’ve served in the Middle East extensively and have hundreds of Iranians, additionally in my time I’ve never come across any piece of intelligence that says the regime is massively unpopular, not saying they are loved by everyone but claiming majority of people want the son of the former shah back is laughable 😂 that’s the big difference between Iran and Iraq, the Baathist regime was vastly unpopular outside of a small group of people. But that is not true in Iran, when you venture outside of Tehran and go in to the townships and villages, people overwhelmingly support the government. Additionally the Iranian regime is loved by large portions of the Iraqi, Lebanese, Yemenese and Syrian populations.
Any escalation of this war would destabilise the entire region. Millions of innocent people will be displaced and killed. This is so mad I can’t believe that this is actually happening.

I think people there want the former Shah's son back like people here might vote for RFK just because his last name is Kennedy. Fact is there just isn't any other competition that's as well known which is why he has some small support. He isn't a serious contender.

I think Cenk agrees with your point about Biden. He doesn’t usually hold back on criticising him on tyt. This was probably just a rhetorical strategy of choosing the most important battle in the moment. It can also be helpful in changing the mainstream audience’s minds if they think he sounds radical, to remind them that Biden agrees with him.

Sorry Kyle but the only people who want the Shah's son back are the rich diaspora Iranians, mostly Iranian-Americans who live in California. These are Iranians who got rich during Shah's regime, then took the riches out of Iran.
I agree. It is so painful as an Iranian in D.C. I keep seeing all these people gathering like vultures around Shah’s son thinking they’re gonna get roles in his imaginary future government, and at any point if they realize you don’t agree with them they attack you with anything they possibly got. Then they pretend they are not fascists ! They are not many but they are rich, loud, and vicious, and that’s why they can pretend they are popular and wanted in in Iran!

Oh, I see. I am sure you are Iranian because most of us Iranians cannot handle any concept that is not duality. I suspect it has to do with the Manichean (Mani) philosophy of duality which is so entrenched in our culture and collective thinking. For us Iranians, every issue has only two sides, only two choices, only two solutions. We think that if the Mullahs are bad, then Shah is good and vice versa. We assume that if one doesn't want Iran to revert back to monarchy, then one must be pro-Mullahs. We immediately conclude that if a person is criticising the Shah, then they must be pro-Mullahs.
No, the reason we didn't discuss the Mullahs is because the topic was about Iranians not wanting the current brutal regime in Iran and the uninformed fool Emily Schrader, the Israeli mouth piece was insisting that Iranians who don't want the Mullahs want the Shah's son to be the next leader of Iran. Our discussion was about disproving that point.
There is more than one opposition and more than one future leadership for a free Iran. A king, no thank you! We have tried that for centuries. It is time to have a free and democratic republic free of Mullahs and princes. By the way, just to be sure, I include Mujahideen Khalgh in the group that should stay away from forming any government in the future of Iran. We have had enough mixing of religion with politics.
Give me a free democratic republic in which there is a defined separation of state and religion.
