This video may be seven years old, but it showed me a tool and how to use it to remove my broken bathtub drain today. Thank-you for leaving up this video on TH-cam.
Thanks so much for this video. I actually BROKE my drain removal tool because my spout was so corroded and stuck. I showed this video to the local plumbing store and they let me borrow this tool and it popped it right out. Great stuff.
This is a woman watching and you saved me!! My drain was corroded like yours and that removal tool was a lifesaver! I thought I was going to break the damn tub before I tried the tub drain extractor!! Thank you!!!
That's the extractor tool!!! I've been holding off this job a month thinking if the pliers didn't work, people said I might need an "extractor tool" as if it would be a large complicated expensive plumbers device!! It's basically an oversize bolt. Thanks for the stress relieving video!
That's the extractor tool ! It's an oversized bolt! ...well... it's hardened and knurled and fits into the drain. I'm glad it relieved some stress. Hmm, I need to look into videos that relieve stress... Glad it helped bud!
Thanks for the video, this totally worked! Home Depot did not list the drain removal tool in their online inventory, but I found one there anyway for about $20. I recognized it only because I saw this video first, then was browsing the shelves for some other replacement parts and noticed it tucked away in the corner. Thanks again!
Thank you so much for posting this. I needed to replace my grandparents drain and this is what I was looking for. You have no idea. You are a life saver.
Thanks for telling me that. That's really why I did it. So many projects it's been kind of a cussing bad deal. I'm hoping we can show each other how to do stuff. Works for me! There is something you know how to do Stephanie that we don't! Please try to show us. Thanks!
Thanks for the video demonstrating the removal of broken spud which helped me to change my drain. It was difficult to turn the drain with the drain key & wrench. So I turned on the hot water for some time which helped me remove the drain with the drain key & wrench. The handyman gave an estimate of $575.
I could not find an extractor in town so I used a large screwdriver and tapped the handle in the drain. I’m good to go. Thank you for the video it got me thinking in the right direction.
And if that don't work, break out the sawzaw with a fine metal blade! Put paper towel in the drain to protect the bottom. Then carefully cut two slits. When you get close to cutting through stop! Use a small common screwdriver and pry the cuts until it pops out. GL
Yours went so much better than mine. About a dozen different tries hammering woke my neighbor, elbow grease, sweat, profanity and so much more! Thanks man good vid 👌
Boy I needed this video, old house was here when my Dad was a boy, he was able to buy from the people across the street where he grew up & where my 93 yr old Grandma lives now. Old brass drain with no metal to put the one tool on, so I guess I'll spend 20$ on the drain extraction tool. Underneath brass nut to pipe doesn't want to come loose. This video saved me on the top portion, I think I got it from here, thanks Dave.
Habor freight heat gun Heat the nut it will expand Cool water in the pipe will help keep the pipe smaller When changing oxygen sensor I put wrench on start car try to turn When exhaust hotenuff it just gives
WOW!!! I can't believe I found this fantastic video! Thanks a million! I'm very excited now about removing the drain. Thanks again! I've been telling everyone about this video.
Well it was really frustrating for me too. It's amazing how the little things can get ya. If you know how to do something, chances are somebody else doesn't. Put it on here! I'm rooting for ya!
My dad has that exact socket wrench, which he had for at least 40 years. He bought quite a few newer craftsman socket wrenches over the years, and the old craftsman like the one you have outlasted all of them. Hang on to that wrench, you can't find any made as good as that one anymore.
You're welcome. My pleasure. I'm a machinist -- I recognized it would work. But the real thanks goes to the people who made the tool. Thanks for commenting!
I've removed a hundred tub drains using all types of methods. Any tub drain extraction tool with auto size adjust and grippy nibs on it like this one works best.
Take a hack saw blade cut down the inside of the old drain ,takes a couple of minute's, then with a screwdriver slide it down one side between the drain and it's fitting threads .The drain will split ,bent it and take it out. Your cost for tools 50cents for the blade and doesn't everyone have a screwdriver.
Wow! Thank you! Here is how to hug me -- there is something you know how to do. You can help. See if you can film it and post it. All these comments. Helping people is pretty addictive. Thanks for commenting!
That's a Dream Scenario for a lightly corroded bathtub drain.....half the time it won't come out so easy when badly corroded. Then the last resort is using a Sawzall with fine tooth blade and carefully, slowly cut until you can remove it with some pliers....Been there; done that.....
Thank you for the video, I have been trying to get a plumber to come out but it must be too cheap of a job that they are not coming for so little!!! Now I was afraid that the piece underneath the tub may drop down bellow the house after removing the piece! Is that underneath piece hooked up to the tub that he actually will not fall off? Thank you very much that may only be a simple fix. 👏
Tried the drain extractor tool. Doesn't work on a drain that's been in the tub for 50+ years. The tool doesn't bite like an easy out. Hacksaw, dremel cut-off wheel, hammer and chisel did the trick, taking out quarter section at a time. Old master plumber told me that's way he's always done it.
ps429 I’m trying with traditional smaller tool just broke off the cross piece was about to go buy tool shown here but I’m dealing with an 80 year old tub so should just jump to your method 👍
@@ronhendon6381 You could try the extractor shown here first if you have a hardware store with an easy return policy (Home Depot, Menards, $20) and simply tell them the tool doesn't work or fit. That's what I did. Just go slow with cutting out pieces. You don't want to cut too deep and damage the pipe threads. I also sprayed some Blaster Penetrant oil to help loosen up some of the old putty. Good luck.
thanks for this video. I'm curious how ours is gonna turn out since the drain is badly corroded. I'm afraid it is just gonna break into small pieces and not come off cleanly. been wanting to learn how to do stuff like this and this is probably one place to start. will probably try to record and share it in my channel, whether it is successful or not. thanks again. new subscriber here.
Is there any way to repair the corroded part of the bathtub drain without replacing it with a new one? Is there any coating solution to stop the corrosion?
I have a leak possibly at the drain. Will replacing it fix the problem? Plumber believes pulling out the tub is the only way to be certain. Also, won't the PVC tube move or drop once the the drain is removed? How do you keep it from moving?
How do I measure the circumference of my drain? There is so much corrosion. Around the inside of the rim appears to be 1.75 in". With all if the corrosion however is 1.5" . 35 yr. Old drain. Will this tool be big enough to remove my drain that looks like its been in the ocean for many decades. Like your vid. I hope this tool will work for my prob.
What if the drain has been siliconed in around the ring we live fourth floor of condo and the plumber siliconed the drain in so it couldnt leak when new now its 13 years old and coroaded an i can not budge it and i dont want to break the fibergalss tub thanks
Right on. My predicament with two drains that just collapsed when I tried to remove them. I knew that there was no bloody way the removal tool would work. These drains are way too brittle to withstand the pressure needed to turn them. Well, back to Home Depot to hopefully find that second remover.
Binh Minh Pham , you can see on the video that he is going counter-clockwise. in the US we say "righty tighty, lefty loosey", meaning the direction you spin. Hope that helps.
I like that. I always wonder which way to unscrew something, now I know. I had followed the manufacturer instruction listed on the back of the package, turning the 1/2" racket wrench counterclockwise, but it didn't work. I was confused when he turned both directions at the 2nd attempt. Neither way works for me. As a last resort, I carefully cut through the corroded, stubborn spud with a hacksaw blade and it worked without any damage to the PVC drain shoe and the tub. (a hacksaw blade + heat+ lubricant + screwdriver + patient)
That "tool" did not work in my case. The waste was just smaller then 1 1/2" so couldn't hammer the damn thing into the waste to get a grip. Not sure what to do now ....
I've seen a plumber use a socket wrench about 18in long to get out the drain. I have also seen a plumber take a saw and cut the damn thing out. Sometimes it's so corroded, one cut and the whole thing basically falls apart!
I open and when I try to connect what happened is the one under the tub it loose and fell under now how I will connect can you give me any tips thank you
Any tips for a double wide trailor homes broken drain? Its a plastic tub and the drain was so corroded that when I stepped on it, the rain pipe below the tub broke off. I don't know what to do.
Will Boy you can cut the vapor barrier and access the plumbing from underneath the trailer. Replace the drain assembly with a new one. If you have trouble unscrewing The strainer basket glue something to it with JB Weld like a large flat washer and A nut on top. Wait for it to dry and then turn it out with a wrench.
This tool is better than the cheaper one. But even this superior tool need lots of muscle power if your drain is old. Also 1/2 socket wrench is not used at home. So you will need to buy a new one . If you are old and the drain is old then call your plumber.
Lol mines broken the opposite way. The threaded end snapped off the top metal lip. So hoping it'll just be a putty knife for the upper part and then use the drain key tool to twist out the threaded part from the bottom. It's kinda floating around under my tub so hopefully won't be to hard to get it to thread in the new one lol
Just wish my stubborn grandparents would listen to me when I say this is all we need to remove the tub drain. They're convinced there's a magic screw somewhere holding it in. Gonna get one of these next chance I get and soak in those sweet 'I told you so' points.
I also bought this and is slipping out. It grips like a champ but I ended up breaking a piece of the overflow since it was too much force, now Im slowly chipping out the damn drain
This video may be seven years old, but it showed me a tool and how to use it to remove my broken bathtub drain today. Thank-you for leaving up this video on TH-cam.
Finally, someone who actually shows you how that piece works. I was using the socket wrench wrong! thank you!!

Clear and to the point. Exactly what I needed. Thanks!
I didn't have a heat gun, but I was able to boil a big pot of water and pour it slowly over and it worked! Very helpful video.
Thanks for the video dude! I work for Chicago Water and Fire Restoration and today is our first tub extraction job, this is HELPFUL!! again thanks!!
You sir are a lifesaver.Thank you for taking the time to show this!!
About to work on a corroded tub drain and wondered what to do if the bars snap. Glad to see that tool.
You are the MAN! I probably walked past this tool a hundred times in the plumbing section and never knew it existed!
ExVinoVeritas what is it called?

Excellent ! A lot of people are going to find this helpful. My issue is the entire (chrome) drain / flange is just spinning, and it won't come out.
Thank you, you saved me a great deal of time and kept me from using a bit of inappropriate language.
Just what I was looking for. Straight to the point! Thanks.
WOW!!! I can't believe I found this fantastic video! Thanks a million! I'm very excited now about removing the drain. Thanks again! I've been telling everyone about this video.

Thanks! I went out to my local hardware store to buy (needed it right away). Worked like a charm!
I didn't have any of those tools but I managed to use some needle nose pliers and that (luckily) freed it! Thanks for the video!
My dad has that exact socket wrench, which he had for at least 40 years. He bought quite a few newer craftsman socket wrenches over the years, and the old craftsman like the one you have outlasted all of them. Hang on to that wrench, you can't find any made as good as that one anymore.
Thanks boss. Appreciate you showing the package as well.
Exactly the same problem with our tub. Now I know which tool to look for, ask for. Thanks!
A good play by play instruction video!
Huge thanks! Buying it off amazon as of now.
Pro tip: Lime-a-way removes all the rust off the tub as well.
Magic eraser good for soup scum calcium buildup
Thank you very much Sir, I found myself in a very similar situation and I was stumped on how to do this myself :) 👍🏾
You're welcome. My pleasure. I'm a machinist -- I recognized it would work. But the real thanks goes to the people who made the tool. Thanks for commenting!
I was staring at my drain like how the hell am I going to get this thing out? Then TH-cam made my dumb ass smart.
I've removed a hundred tub drains using all types of methods. Any tub drain extraction tool with auto size adjust and grippy nibs on it like this one works best.
Did you ever break any pipes trying to remove it?
I got one of those, but it won't fit the sizes of my drain. I can't find a smaller size😢
Thanks for the video. Great help on trying to remove a broken drain

this is AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! thank you!!! i have been wondering how to get this out!!!!
wow thank you!! i am gonna try! what is the name of tool you are using?
Tub drain extractor
This saved me HUNDRED$ because we live in a very rural area. I could just HUG you!
Hammer and a chisel is all you need.

Wow that’s exactly what happened to mine. Just naught the tool on eBay. Very nice job thanks for the help.
Rare to see such excellent lighting
Did you run hot water or use a hair dryer to heat up and loosen the putty before removing?
Omg! Thank you. This is precisely what i needed!
Thanks. That's just what I needed to know.
I know this video is from 6 years ago. But thanks a lot man.
Great video. Really glad you passed that on
Thank you sir, outstanding. I was hoping it would be an easy fix !

is that a box store tool? expensive or fairly inexpensive?
