Genetic history of Sardinia

- Sardinia has been of special interest to geneticists for decades. The reason being that it is the only place in Europe that has retained a genetic profile similar to the Neolithic first farmers of Europe originally from Anatolia. The paper “Genetic history from the Middle Neolithic to present on the Mediterranean island of Sardinia” in Nature Communications studies the genetic history of the island.

I have just found out i have sardinian DNA, i can not wait to visit where my family came from.
Me to. It's less than 1%, but still a surprise. I didn't even know where it was! It's on my list of destinations.
Same here less than 1% Sardinian, explains my love of olives and sourdough bread!
Me to!! and what’s mind blowing is I discovered throat singing before I took my dna test. I felt something in my chest. My hubby thought I was crazy but I connected to that music like crazy. Then turns out our ancestors invented it 😅
U might be part giant
Yo tengo 19% de sardo
Thank you for doing this in English! This is a great video.
Yo lo necesito en español, jejeje
I’m intrigued by the 3 dots near Mt Ararat. What if it’s not age ie Neolithic, Bronze Age but perhaps signifies 3 family groups from Japhet, Shem and Ham?
Ахахахахаха
Thanks for talking about Sardinians and EEFs
Thank you. I have some Sardinian , Portugal, Spain, plus Siberia besides France, Germany, England, Ireland and Scotland. Neanderthal too.
nice info!
Please come back!
Is anyone here after a ancestry test 30% Sardinian and never heard of it before
Thank you
I just found out I’m 30 % Sardinian had never even heard of this place 🙄🤓
I also found I’m part Sardinian, and our usernames are almost identical 😂
@@Swagmaster021 oh my gosh !!!! Are you male or female ?
🤣🤣
@@BlaBla-rx7yl I’m a male 😂
I'm only 2% but I hadn't heard of it either lol
Any good books about the history of Sardinia? I found Sardinian ancestry on my various ancestry reports.

Is there a comparable study of the ancestry of Corsicans? I think it's interesting that while the two islands are so close their genetic and cultural history appear quite different.
Yes, if you search in Google you will found it. Genetics between the 2 islands are not different or at least not in the population who lives in the relatively isolate villages. Ciao
Corsicans are likely linked because the Haplogroup J-L283 has shown presence with northern Italy and corsica and daunian dna.
Likewise the giants of Sardinia heads are similar to the Stele daunian heads. J-L283 present in Italy, adriatic and corsica in ancient samples
Culturally we're not so different. Daily life, food, and traditions are similar enough. Honestly, more similar to them than to the rest of Italy.
I have recently found out from my ancestry DNA that I got 2% Sardinian DNA , does anyone know how to interpret this? I can’t wait till I see Sardinia and my relatives ❤

Got a DNA test turns out I have an ancestor from 5-8 gen back from here!
Just had my DNA tested. I have a rare "Otzi man" Y Haplogroup more common on Sardinia. I guess I'm a Neolithic man
Wow, Yogiyoda that is pretty damn cool!

No, unfortunately Dnaland was closed by lack of funding
I’m Sardinian
Dna.land told me that I am 9% Sardinian..
I have around 25% of Sardinian DNA according to FamilyTreeDNA. I am from Mexico and all my ancestors as I know came from Spain, can someone explain how Spanish people get Sardinian DNA?
Sardinia was a possession of many Spanish crowns over the centuries (the word for “ugly” where I grew up in northern Sardinia, is “feo/a”. There was much migration between islanders and Iberians, who would eventually settle in the new world (e.g. Mexico). I was born in Rome to ancestors I can trace back to only about 1875 who were within a 3-hour drive from the capital, but I have 19% Sardinian DNA; my hypothesis is one of our great-great-grandparents partook in the great internal migrations between regions that took place after unification in 1871.
@@sergpie it's super interesting how we are all interconnected!
@@PauloPadd totally cuban here the two DNA matches closest to me are southern Europeas a region and Sardinia itself as a nation.

@@lettumaino Sardinians did not migrate widely to the US. Mostly in the rest of Europe. The biggest place with Sardinians outside of Sardinia apart from Italy, is France and Germany

@@cakesboo6554 being sardinian is an ethnic thing. Nobody care about your genes here. It's about the language and traditions
I am as well. It’s not uncommon to see other Iberian or Sardinian DNA in the part of France our people come from.
It was a part of the Roman Empire prior.
@@cakesboo6554 The part of France Cajuns come from would be more Mediterranean and was a part of the Roman Empire.
Southern Europe is high in Early European Farmers ancestry, which Modern Sardinians still carry the most of. Basque as well.
I’m not saying it’s impossible, but these people have been mixing for thousands of years prior to the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade.
My surprising 1.4 % Sardinian ancestry is the only thing saving me from being the most generic white person.

No
no.
Sardinians are very different in genetics, history, culture, lifestyle
Yes with ancient Italians ( ancient etruscans likely). Although they showed some similarity with old iberian populations and basque also.

@@peterjungmann6057 otzi was not genetically Sardinian but he mah have had a Sardinian ancestors among others, who travelled north. Otzi was more similar to sardinians than modern day central europeans, which have less neolithic admixture today
we are nothing like french or italian people in culture. our ancestors are lebanese, egyptian, syrian amongst many others. we are not genetically European and are classified as an indigenous group of people.
@@Scarlett-kk1kh You are totally wrong, Sardinians are predominantly Early European Farmer DNA. They cluster no way near those populations you are talking about. Did you not watch the video. Sardinians are European, they reflect a population that is largely similar to Neolithic Europeans. Anatolian Early European Farmers do not cluster with the populations you are referring to.
Sazzini et al 2016 is a comprehensive Study on Italian populations. I recommend you read the paper. Figure 2 is what I will use to point out the major findings. 780 Modern Italians, peoples whose ancestors have a history there for hundreds, and hundreds of years; the peoples used in the sample, not recent migrants, were analyzed. As you can see in Figure 2, modern Italian populations form 4 clusters. 1) A Northern Italian Macro Cluster, 2) A Central Italian macro cluster, 3) A Southern Italian Macro Cluster, which Sicily is part of and 4) Sardinia. Look at the Plot, Sardinians plot just West of Tuscany/Lazio (Central Italy). Lebanese, Egyptians and Syrians plot up on another cline as you can see. Sardinians are not genetically related to those populations and are Distinct from them. However, Sardinians are indeed, similar to the Basque in Spain and France, a group of people who remain very very similar to European Populations in the Neolithic period.
www.nature.com/articles/srep32513
Kilinc et al 2016 analyzes 9 ancient Anatolian Early European Farmer Genomes (8,000 to 10,000 years old, See Table 1 for ancient Genomes and archeological sites) and plots them relative to modern Populations from Europe, West Asia/Levant and North Africa. Figure 2 is the analysis that clearly shows how Sardinians cluster relative to other populations. It is very clear that Sardinians are part of a Southern European Genetic Cluster, which includes all Italian Populations (North, Central, South-Sicily), Southern France, Spain, Greece and Albania. On the other hand, Syrians, Lebanese (Levant Populations) are in that Middle Eastern Cluster, but to the top end of it closer to Iran-Armenia. On the opposite end of that cluster, you find Arab populations (Bedouins, Saudis)
www.cell.com/current-biology/fulltext/S0960-9822(16)30850-8
In summary, the extant DNA literature does not support what you are saying 100%. Yes, you are correct Sardinians are a unique/indigenous people but they are part of the European Cluster genetically, in particular the Southern European genetic cluster, not the ones you are suggesting.
