Super expensive bit of kit then and even now, they still go for around £700-£800 here in the UK. I’d love one but settled for the non accelerated version for my A500. Keep those old girls trucking Chris! ❤🎉
on the GVP a530 Jumper CN18 pins 1-2 (default) is 7mhz bus speed and 2-3 is 14Mhz you can get 2megs a sec on that speed test, sort of like doing the 14mhz upgrade on a a2091 scsi controller, but with a jumper
You have a lot of patience and a lot of experience. Broken GAL's. Never would have suspected this. Your videos are very educational and I learned a lot from you. Thank you.
GVP was a great company and did a lot to keep Amiga viable. In my A2000 I started with a GVP SCSI HardCard, then upgraded to a GVP Combo 030 and then finally switched that out for a TekMagic 060. I wish they had been able to purchase Commodore/Amiga back when everything went stupid.
"I could play games on this if I wanted to" - the Amiga Format review model A530 spent most of it's life in a shared house for the games review copy writers. ;) I didn't live there but I did visit.
The A530 uses PALCE chips which are protected PALS. They cannot be read in a programmer. I have jed files for U35, U38, and U40 for the A530 pulled from unprotected originals. I have written these to new PALS and they work on my A530.
I still have my A530 from back in the day. I remember the scsi cable blocked the fan and the heat caused the scsi drive to shut down. The '030 gave a nice boost in performance.
Oh had one of those (A530), fits the A500 perfectly, much prettier that commodores own devices. Fast as well 🙂 Sold it to a friend when I got my A3000.
That is a lot nicer than what I had. I had the ICD Trifecta 500LX and the Supra Turbo 28. They worked well but the fact that I had two pieces plugged in was a bit worrisome since my desk was not a rock-solid platform. I would have been really happy to have had an '030 but I had to settle for the 28Mhz '010 that was in the Supra.
In addition to the possible random erasing, I also thing some people are "fixing" old gear. They just look at the chip part number, find one on the internet and order another. But they dont know enough to check the datasheet to realize it needs programming. Having failed, they give up and sell it on to some unsuspecting ebay customer who then has the sense to either know how to properly repair or send it to people who do.
Another great video! Did this one have the metal RF shield fully installed? I know some folks like to take them off if they are not connecting to a TV or non-VGA CRT. Perhaps those GVP chips are simply too sensitive to static...
Anyone remember an 8meg expansion unit that went between a500 and slot in external harddrive? Or am i imagining it,only saw pictures in mags back in the day?
Supra ram 500RX is closer, but that isn't it either...I might be imaging it. It was a longer strip then the 500Rx and was it's own contained module and sat in the middle of external harddrive on the left and an a500 on the right.following the same contours of both devices ?
Hi Chris, love your channel! I have an A590 that was a gift my father gave me many years ago when I was about 15. It was working up to sometime last year. I turned it on and I smelled smoke. I turned it off and turned it back on. It still turns on but does not load. I would love to get it repaired as it has a tremendous amount of sentimental value. Can you please help me fix it? I can compensate you for your time. Thank you!
It's probably the +12V rail. That one is used to supply voltage to actually spin a motor. Good news - hard drive replacements / emulators like ZuluSCSI don't need a +12V supply, because they don't have motors. Easy enough to check, disconnect the power to the hard drive, and measure the voltages with a multimeter. I bet the +12V doesn't read, but the +5V rail does (can be fed direct from Amiga on an A500 hard drive.) CBM always recommended a separate PSU for the A590. I am unsure as to recommend what to replace it with. But that's where I would look.
Ah, a little known fact about GVP - they had an engineer make the mould for the hard drive cases. They secured millions in startup capital, 4 is the figure I heard at the time.
i USED to have one ages ago, till the HDD in it died then the Power Pack Died. (( and in one of the few Housing moves i delt w/ as a kid, i accidently'd past the point of no return n it got l;eft behind ;-; it had an adapter inside for 286 Emulation. ))
Very interesting chip failure. Would be interested in seeing how you can reprogram them and if they will work again. $11 isn’t a big deal but is this a chip that is still being made?
Chris can you send me a link on how to do the power mod on the GVP A530. I’m going to switch my scsi2sd with a zuluSCSI so the power mod would be great. Does anyone know of this power mod Chris mentioned in his video. Any help would be appreciated.
Tryed what you said now all I have is a is a black screen and a Cap lock that comes on for a second or two when power turned on any suggestions would be helpful.
dont know. you may have popped a chip, you can try reseating denise , pushing down on agnus. its hard to say without seeing it. those 68K ram board ide add ons cause issues, as you are living now.
Chris I have a amiga 500 that had go fast ram 8meg that has been fighting me I installed it and now have a dead machine have you come across this problem the machine flashes red on cap lock once then nothing black screen you also hear a noise from drive
Is that the cpu ram board thing w ide on it?? They have a real Bad track record. Take it out and put the cpu back in regular and see of it works in basic mode. Then toss that in the bin and get a pistorm
My GVP .040 does not work either. I'm reasonably sure the SCSI chip is fried, can you replace it. I have a GVP board from an A2000 with the same chip. Can it be swapped?
@@ChrisEdwardsRestoration Can I send it to you for repair/testing? Also, I have 1 working floppy drive, I saw one of your videos where you adjusted some. Can you fix me a couple? I also have the 2 meg chip ram for my A500 that quit working.
The reason it doesn't work is because it's made by GVP...nothing but trouble. Do what I did, pull all of it out, replace it with something else, and then all problems go away like magic.
Love this video, really miss my A500 and A590.

I was always drooling over the A530 in the adverts. Then I got an A590, and a A5000..... And then I got an A1200 afterwards
a500 you mean?
@@ChrisEdwardsRestoration no, I mean I already the A500.... And expanded it untill I got the A1200

Pal's/Gals are 40 years old, they suffer from bitrot or loss of data much like eproms. Its pretty incredible they hold their data this long.

Great job Chris, love seeing Amigas being repaired and working again.
I think someone was using A530 sidecar as a bumper car. It's nice to see you use your diagnostic toys to help fix these treasures. Take care.
Aah, the look of the GVP devices, had a similar one back in the day. It was like a beast from the future, loved it.

I would be interested in the files. Can you share them with me?
can you post jed files?

i remember that fan. it was the first and only thing that broke from this device. it accidently got hit by a hammer...
Great upload Dr Chris. Learned something new again 👍🏻 🤞🏻Those Custom Amiga Chips I’ve sent you don’t get zapped 😬

Something the courier is using to scan packages is zapping the chips. Shipping in an anti-static bag too might nelp
