    You mention Nikola Tesla as an example of a jarring use of a historical character, but you missed an utterly _gigantic_ one that I feel is worth mentioning: Lafayette.
    Going by his line late in the game that he survived two revolutions, he is undoubtedly the Maquis de Lafayette, the famous American Revolutionary general and a leading figure of the French Revolution. Presuming of course that the alternate history split does not end there, why in the name of God has a man who has twice worked against the interests of the British Empire and would have been known and associated with anti-monarchist forces be allowed to join a knightly order with ties to the British nobility? Oh, and it should be noted that it is theorized that one of his motivations for his joining the American Revolutionary cause was because he hated the British for killing his father during the Seven Years War, which puts into question why, even if offered, he would accept such a position.
    Why would the British Empire allow this, and why would he accept the invitation to an order that seemingly answers only to the British House of Lords, when by all accounts, Lafayette was a man dedicated to the cause of liberty and equal freedoms for all citizens? It would have made more sense if it was George frickin' Washington instead, because at least he at some point was a loyal subject of the Empire. It's another perfect example of a lazily inserted historical figure for the sake of setting the period.

      Wouldn't he be dead by 1886? IIRC, he died in the 1820's.....

    • @WoobooRidesAgain
      @WoobooRidesAgain 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@earlofbroadst Yes, but that much is explained by the magic immortality water from the Holy Grail, since some of the characters are heavily implied to have been actual crusading knights at one point or another.
      EDIT: Although it's worth mentioning he'd probably look a _lot_ older by this point. Unless the magic water also reverses your age, and seeing how inconsistent the rest of the lore is I'm not putting anything past it.

      It's an alternative history, dude. Would it take too much to imagine that he wasn't anti-British in this timeline?

      @@steelbear2063 I think an explanation is still in order if you’re changing a historical person this much. Otherwise what’s the point of name checking a real person.

    • @WoobooRidesAgain
      @WoobooRidesAgain ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@steelbear2063 Responding late but also:
      Saying "what if Lafayette wasn't anti-British" is akin to saying "what if Arthur-Conan Doyle wasn't a writer". It basically posits a question that so radically alters their personalities and how they developed into the people that they are famous for being that they effectively become an entirely different person.
      Without a Lafayette so vehemently anti-British, you don't have a Lafayette that sneaks into the American colonies on a ship he purchased with his own money, a Lafayette who doesn't get familiarized with the ideals of the American Revolution that would influence his own views on personal freedoms and democracy, a Lafayette who doesn't write the "Declaration of the Rights of Man and the Citizen" that formed the bedrock of the ideologies of the French Revolution and a Lafayette who didn't vehemently argue against the monarchist actions of Napoleon.
      In all likelihood, what you end up with is a Lafayette who spends most of his life as an obscure noble and likely ends it in exile in Bavaria or at the sharp end of a guillotine.

    This game is up there with the likes of Brave Fencer Musashi, Fear Effect, Ape Escape, and Dino Crisis as one of those holy-grail sequels/reboots I’d give my first born child to have. It’s not perfect, but no game is. If the developers took feedback into account I could see a sequel massively elevating this series into being one of the greats.

  • @TrevorNWhite

    I didn’t take any screenshots, so I can’t confirm whether this actually happened or I wasn’t paying attention and just imagined it for some reason, but I could’ve sworn that when I first played the game, the dates that popped up throughout the story were the same month and date as the day I was playing it (I spread it out over a few weeks). If so, it was either an insane coincidence or some programmed thing.
    In any case, great analysis! I think this is the perfect example of one of those titles early in a new system’s launch where the selling point is just “look at these graphics!” but the gameplay can’t back it up. Which is a shame, because I thought this was a pretty cool world idea.

    Great video, Hudson!
    I got the vibe that this game was basically chopped to pieces and shipped as-is, sort of like Sony's Drive.Club but DC actually being a functional racing game and getting more time probably because it was attached to that initial Sony E3 where they promised it for free. As you pointed out, Ready at Dawn do have experience making good games, but I think they bit off way too much and just ran out of time. If you recall, the delay of the game was VERY sudden: I think it was literally mere weeks away from the October launch.
    The "end" of the game feels blatantly like it was just chopped off from more game, if you give it much thought the locations and chapters don't flow well, the sudden intro, the lack of vampires or even a mention of them before the big reveal, but more importantly: Tesla. The way they intro him is very much like he's being set up to be an upgrade/gear guy, complete with interacting with things in his never again seen lab and him all but saying COME BACK AND I CAN GIVE YOU MORE UPGRADES.
    There's actually even earlier interviews from before the "Story is our focus, not gameplay" ones where they say story is their focus but they want you to be able to explore some and how the combat encounters will take into account weapons so you can do things like melt cover, change the battlefield up (this happens like once in the game?), and taking Last of Us as an in-house example of having small side areas and ways for levels to branch, which...the final game has nearly none of. (I think the asylum has a literal room or two on the side for collectibles.)
    Again, great video and keep up the good work!

    I remember reading about this game in a magazine that I believe was Rolling Stone. It looked incredible and I thought it would be a slam dunk that would be considered one of the best of it's time. It was pretty early in that generation of consoles that I only just finally got around to enjoying almost 2 years ago. (Playing catch-up is most fun with video games!) I was blown away when the game came out to such little fanfare that it seemed to be instantly forgotten.... Reminds me of Blacksite: Area 51, a game that released to similar circumstances somewhat early during the Xbox 360's lifespan. Over the years since I've learned a very important lesson when it comes to video games; never get excited of anything, ever!
    Nah, that's probably just part of getting old, actually.

    I feel I should open a parenthesis and point out the degree to which the gaming press is inconsistent in its treatment of the various game releases. Suffice to think of the critical reception that games as shallow, repetitive, and poorly paced as "Hellblade" and "Quantum break" have received compared to "The order" to make my point stand. Why is one of the worst torture sessions I have ever had to endure - "What happened to Edith Finch" - held as a masterpiece then, when all you do is walk around someone's house while participating in toddler's mini-games?
    What obscure set of criteria makes or breaks a game in terms of critical reception in this industry? - because there doesn't seem to be any logic to it. Why is "Spec ops: The line" relegated to the 70's metacritic, while "The last of us" proudly thrones in the high 90's? Again, take Splinter cell: Blacklist or Tomb raider for instance - games that came out the same year as TLOU, and that both demonstrate significantly superior level design, depth, and player's agency than the TLOU - These games are currently sitting at a much lower average rating than TLOU. That is what I mean by "incoherence" and "inconsistency" in the reception and treatment of games at release.
    I guess, the logical conclusion is that game ratings and reception are much more effective at revealing something about the critical landscape, than a meaningful measure of a game's merit, and well... this sucks.
    End of the tangent.
    In the end, when it is all said and done, I had a fairly good time with "The order: 1886" and despite its core fundamental flaw, I find myself glad I played it. Simply put, if you feel like shooting stuff, and If the world, lore, and overall creative design find grace in your eyes - like they did in mine - go right ahead, you won't regret it

    The new games the did, though, Daxter and the two God Of Wars, were freaking great.

    Daxter was in my opinion the last great Ps2-style jump&run.

    7:38 If gameplay is the most important aspect of a game, and can leave a lasting impression on the player (whether good or bad), then it's perfectly justified to label a game as mediocre or pure garbage based on the gameplay mechanics included; for example, I view limited-stamina systems and equipment-fragility systems to be player-hostile and needless restrictions, since they artificially limit what the player can do. I also view permadeath to be frustrating, rage-inducing, and nothing but a reset causer; monetised elements just should not exist in the first place. Leaving out content previous games in a franchise had, for no justifiable reason, will also leave a black mark on the gameplay, especially when the absence is noticeable and obvious.
    As a result, I have found Breath of the Wild to be a boring chore since it includes limited stamina and equipment fragility, alongside a complete lack of map markers to guide exploration, an ugly art style, and slow and awkward combat even without factoring in fragility. Fire Emblem is much better in "Casual" mode, where permadeath is disabled, and Pokemon Sword/Shield are the worst games in the series (unless Let's Go! is counted, when they're clearly spin-offs) due to still lacking hundreds of Pokemon species and moves - whether they will all return in the Diamond/Pearl remakes is still unknown.
    Genshin Impact is a truly horrific game, since it brings monetised mobile elements to the PC, and can result in future games adopting the same repulsive measures.

    One thing worth of mention, other than the steampunk guns, the game also has a Lewis gun and a Colt Navy revolver. Lewis gun was invented in 1911, so it seems kind pointless to add a real light machine gun from the real future, when the steampunk tech machine guns of fictional 1886 are already better. On the other hand, Percival has a Colt Navy revolver which was invented in 1850 and uses black powder. By real world 1886 that was already an outdated revolver, by 1886 steampunk standards, that is a piece of junk. The steampunk gun tech in this game is all over the place.

    I like a game with a good story, I like story driven games... As long as the gameplay is at least somewhat engaging. Even if the story doesn't make much sense, if the gameplay is fun and engaging I can ignore it. Take Bayonetta for example: The gameplay is the main focus and the story doesn't make a whole lot of sense but it doesn't matter because the gameplay is so much fun and very deep. The order is lacking in both, with lacklustre gameplay and bad pacing and exposition in the story, in my opinion; I think it lacks in both story and gameplay. The devs really missed something here because neither feels engaging
