  • Thanks for watching!
    I got a new WEN 4214 drill press in the shop. This is my unbox, setup and review of the WEN 4214 12" drill press. This press is, in my opinion, the best drill press you can get for the money.
    I bought this WEN 4214 for $229 plus tax from Amazon where it receives a 4.3 star review. You can buy this drill press at Rockler painted white with the Jet brand on it on sale for $359 plus shipping. Jet® JWDP-12 12. The good folks at Rockler give it a 4.4 star rating.
    Here's the Amazon Link, if you are interested...

    Nice review. The variable pulley system is the same as my 38 year old Shop Smith and it has never failed. The odd sound from the motor when turned off is a motor break , which is very nice. keep up the good work.

    Also, $270.80 at Home Depot today. Not available in the store, but free shipping. (Their stores are too small...)

    i was surprised to see your reaction to being made in Taiwan not that i put Wen in this class but today almost all the better made shop Equipment are built there including ShopFox, Grizzly and even Delta machinery Taiwan has the ability and knowledge of building good things it’s kind of up to the Individual Companies having their machinery built there to pay for the level of quality and standards they want to pay for which of course is reflected inthe overall Retail price we need to,pay for the items the majority of all the factories are owned by the bigger Tool and Retail Stores that distribute and sell the brands Home Depot and Lowe’s are 2 of the big players of course but often their names are disguised like they do in the Food and Pharmeceuitical businesses

      Yeah I agree completely. Tools are even designed to be sold at a price point decided upon by research analysts. It seems like the days of "if you build the best tool, they will come" are over.

    Thank you for solving the mystery of the variable speed transmission - I have not found any info online about the drive system on these WENs which need no belt position changing.
    I am now wondering if it is cheaper to replace the simple belts rather than this toothed belt ? Also, will this belt wear out sooner than those flat belts.
    I really like the variable speed so I hope this belt is just a few dollars more than the step belts.

    • @PaddyGDIY
      @PaddyGDIY  5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      No way of knowing how long this belt will last in this application. There are a lot of factors, tolerances, design, quality of parts, is it a quality belt or a cheap belt? I am afraid that only time will tell... I’ll keep you posted.
      I’d offer to do a follow up video but there is nothing to say really, except that it still working perfectly after 6 months. Thanks for the comments!

      @@PaddyGDIY Not sure but the "toothed belt" is a carbon fiber belt. I have over 100,000 miles on Harley Davidson's and never had to change the belt. Thanks for showing how the variable speed drive worked because now I know and can buy one myself in confidence of the quality. Good video.

      Sorry for the slow reply, I missed your question. It's a press fit deal. Like I said in the video, the instructions say to hit it with a hammer. Oh, and be sure to use an oil free cleaner to remove all of the dirt and grease before you attach it.

    I'm adding wood under the top plate to the table top. Then attaching it to the work bench, providing more strength to the flimsy base.

  • @billonthehill9984
    @billonthehill9984 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Good presentation, thanks. I'll take a closer look at this bench unit. The variable speed does indeed work just like a CVT in today's smaller vehicles, i.e., my Subaru Outback!
    Not sure what the growling sound is I hear while running, I'm guessing the variable pulley & belt system on top? The price seems more than reasonable on this unit. Well packed too. In all honesty, I have my eye on the Delta 18-900L stand up unit, best of the best in its class for a woodworkers drill press, however it is a beast of a drill press! ( $999.00 ) at HD & has to be ordered... :-)

    You cannot judge the chuck's concentricity by placing anything on the body of the chuck, including a test indicator. It's doesn't mean anything to total runout. They do not bother with ensuring concentricity in areas that don't matter.
    Spindle runout, arbor runout, total runout. These matter.
    Chuck up a piece of precision rod and indicate that. That's really all that's important.

    • @PaddyGDIY
      @PaddyGDIY  6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I agree completely. I was going to mention that but forgot to go back and record it. It was a ballpark shot to satisfy my curiosity. You are correct.
      I actually have very little runout when using it. Check the WEN4280 video where I make the base to mount the stand on. I do need to get myself a runout gauge.

    my speed change lever wont move . I turn the motor on the speed is at 530 rpm . I want 3000rpm but the lever wont move . Like it is stuck . Should I tap it with a piece of wood to unstick it ?

    The same people that complain about Chinese tools also complain about the extreme prices for American made power tools. There is a reason for this. Most consumer power tools manufacturing has moved to China. If you want to spend a little more for quality buy one that's made in Taiwan. You want serious accuracy and no slop that's made in America ? Be prepared to obtain a 2nd mortgage to pay for it. They're among the best money can buy but at a cost. Try pricing an American made lathe! What he has here is China's top tier. Get a Jet from Taiwan and shell out 3-4 times the cost. You have the US Congress to blame for this starting in the mid to late 1970s. I watched the Senators nearly wipe out the US based furniture and textile manufacturing base.

      They may be the same. It's not uncommon for companies to source lower end products to offshore manufacturers who make a few changes to a current product and rebrand it.
      I paid more for this drill press than any I have owned. But it is still a lower to mid range product. I would not be surprised to find it sold under another banner....
      Thanks for the comment! By the way, I still love this drill press!

    Well I finally got a response from WEN customer service. it only took 10 days and i had talked with customer service a few times already about the low power. They replaced the motor awhile ago and the problem persists. they emailed me several things to try like speed up the forstner bit to 1300rpm, it touches the wood and stops. and i sent them a video of what's going on and
    they sent me a pic of drill speeds by type and then tells me that the 4214 wont bore a 1 7/8" hole in hard wood .
    Hi Mike,

    The drill press it is working fine , just not strong enough to drill a 1 7/8" hole on Hardwood :-(
    Have a Great Week!!
    Problem is i was trying to bore a hole in pine, fir or particle board. So beware they sell a tool that will not do what their own video displays, telling me, to bad you bought a weak ass tool Have a great week! I asked for a replacement, but i suppose they are all finished trying to help me. here is their own video showing exactly what i what to do, and they tell me nope won't do it
    th-cam.com/video/iV4yJ86YE8c/w-d-xo.html very sad I really want to like this tool , I think the quill bearings are installed wrong/damaged and the rolling resistance is very high. I told them that ....you can remove the belt and turn the quill by hand and its hard to do.

      Incorrect. The proper way to install a JT33 drill chuck is to have it lose and hit it once with a dead blow hammer. Press fitting it as he did will cause the run out because the taper will seat prematurely and loose.

    The bad thing about all drill press that have table elevating crank that heir tables wobble side ways,this is bad when you convert drill press into milling machine..Additional guide bar required to install at other side where table support bracket is,table cannot wobble side ways during milling..Converting drill press into milling machine is cheaper than buying actual milling machine,compound table is required for milling so as set of clamps and compound vises..
