  • "Aubade" (1944) by Marius Flothuis. Performed by Christine Erlander Beard, flute. Recorded using an iPhone 15 pro at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, Strauss Performing Arts Center Christensen Concert Hall on the 80th anniversary of the work's premiere (the piece was composed for and premiered by flutist Everard von Royen for his birthday on April 14, 1944 while both men were imprisoned in Camp Vught during WWII).
I discovered this piece while researching music by banned/exiled/persecuted composers, and while simultaneously curating a new art+music+lecture series in Omaha, NE for the Samuel Bak Museum and Learning Center during the spring 2024 semester. This research has been a fascinating journey and music of the holocaust has now become a new extension of my #flutistactivist initiative. I hope to post more of this music soon! In the meantime, I will be giving a lecture-recital at the Samuel Bak Museum on June 6th discussing the role of music during the Holocaust, and I will perform works by Jewish composers Rosy Wertheim and Reine Colaço Osorio-Swaab.
If this subject matter is of interest to you, I hope you'll make plans to attend my lecture-recital at the 2024 National Flute Convention in San Antonio, TX entitled, "The Banned Play On: Music by Persecuted Composers" where I will perform and discuss music by Rosy Wertheim, Jan Novak, Chaing Wen-yeh, and Thomas de Hartmann, along with my colleague Jeremy Benson who will be performing music by Dick Kattenburg and Walter Gieseking. We will be joined by the fabulous pianist Allison Franzetti.

Really beautiful. Thank you both for the playing and for the commentary and context. Very moving.

Thank you, Richard! And albeit of topic, I always remember our performance together fondly and hope we have another opportunity in the future to make music together!
