My friend USC J spotted this hire almost a month ago, in the sense that he mentioned the idea to me and put out a video about it afterwards. All he was saying was that he loved the idea of Lynn just staying in town and coming over to bring his talents to SC. I agree with the whole thing. I give the hire an A grade. Leonard really wants to coach in the NFL and if he had come, would have left in a New York minute for the NFL if offered a job there. Lynn has NFL experience, is young, lives here and has a young son. There are many reasons for him to focus on coaching at SC for some number of years. There is no arguing against his talent. He took a UCLA team with the same players that were really bad, somewhere around 90th in the country in defense to the 11 spot or so. And their run defense as you point out was #1 in the nation. Just imagine what he can do with USC in this next season. And he won’t be coming aboard in February like he did with UCLA…he will have far more time to recruit, develop and prepare his players. Another selling point here is that in addition to experience and having cut his teeth in the NFL, he has experience in and understands the BIG. His prospects, and USC’s prospects are very bright this year. Let’s see where this goes!
You right Gabe, it’s a risk hiring him. 1 season isn’t a big pool to judge a coach on. Lots of bad coaches had a good year. Helton did, even Grinch did in his career. Woulda liked to have gotten a proven coach whose name carries weight with recruits. That said, let’s support the guy and see what he can do.
Grinch never came close to the defensive numbers Lynn produced in one season. And Helton was successful but obviously bailed out by Sam Darnold - I don't see a single player that made Lynn's defense work.

This is going to be an underrated hire, that I believe is going to end up being an unbelievable hire. The immediate and incredible turnaround at UCLA cannot be overlooked. His schemes will be more recruit and portal friendly than Grinch’s scheme. Going into the B1G I think this is a good hire that’s puts the USC program in a good position to compete with the B1G heavies.
I hope he implements the bear front famous by Buddy Ryan. Lynn was a defensive assistant under Rex Ryan at Buffalo. After the Vince Young game, Pete started using the scheme, and it worked wonders, and the defense improved each year.

Lincoln Riley strategically gets to keep his buddy staff. Coach Lynn needs to hire his own entire staff. Now Riley can dictate his non contact workouts as usual. This inherits bad tackling. With a 1 year track record & bounced around the NFL year to year just brings to many reg flags. Lincoln is under pressure & Lynn inherits players that will need a full year for results going into Big 10. This could happen with any hire but i just see Lynn as a #4 option. Why did top DCords pass on the job? They see a Head Coach with 1 year left. Inherits same staff. Non contact workouts. Strength & Conditioning is a wreck. So glad we didn't go with Jim Leonard. Lynn & the DC from SMU were my first two choices. But I preferred Lynn because I'm tired of the 3-3-5 schemes you're asking to get the ball ran down your throat running a 3-3-5 in the Big 10. Leonard isn't a great recruiter remember he lost out on Curtis to Grinch, of all people. Plus, Leonard feasted on terrible Qb play in the Big 10 west. Jim in my eyes was up to par, big ten experience several seasons as DC coach Lynn only has one season as a DC however his resume with the NFL and youth plus eagerness as a coach can’t be ignored

I’m not sold on it. What a huge risk with a guy with one solid year. Can he recruit? UCLA didn’t play UW or Oregon this season, could they have no stopped those offenses? A lot will be determined next season against teams like Michigan.

And Michigan is losing a lot next year and perhaps Jim Harbaugh leaving. It's like Washington. They won't be the same next year.

UCLAs defense played excellent this past year despite having a poor offense. They had perfect formations and plays against USC...I joked after the USC game, why can't we get their D coach..Never thought this would happen.

Lincoln Riley strategically gets to keep his buddy staff. Coach Lynn needs to hire his own entire staff. Now Riley can dictate his non contact workouts as usual. This inherits bad tackling. With a 1 year track record & bounced around the NFL year to year just brings to many reg flags. Lincoln is under pressure & Lynn inherits players that will need a full year for results going into Big 10. This could happen with any hire but i just see Lynn as a #4 option. Why did top DCords pass on the job? They see a Head Coach with 1 year left. Inherits same staff. Non contact workouts. Strength & Conditioning is a wreck. I hope Lynn can help but i just dont see this working until a dcord can hire his own staff.

So glad we didn't go with Jim Leonard. Lynn & the DC from SMU were my first two choices. But I preferred Lynn because I'm tired of the 3-3-5 schemes you're asking to get the ball ran down your throat running a 3-3-5 in the Big 10. Leonard isn't a great recruiter remember he lost out on Curtis to Grinch, of all people. Plus, Leonard feasted on terrible Qb play in the Big 10 west. The Qb's are going to get better an better in the Big 10, and Lynn showed he can shut down dynamic QB's and passing games. Fight On
