The sound and light of your Japan series hit me deeply. Having spent 4 years straight in Japan, you definitely made me wanting to schedule a visit soon. Great vid as always, such a mood❤
Thanks, that really means a lot! Over the last few years of not being able to visit, I've been so glad to have made so many videos in the past, that I could relive the moments in bulk. It's so great to be back here now though!
You really don’t have a clue how much I do miss Japan. So your vlogs there are really appreciated, look forward to the content to come, enjoy it and have a great time. Cheers from Germany
As a, previously serial Fuji X owner, strayed & back with a pre/order XT5, I’m not sure why I hadn’t come across you before? The XT5 was the link, but what has got me to subscribe is the sheer enthusiasm and infectious love you have for photography and Japan. Such a fascinating country and one I’d love to visit some day, including also the surprising amount of amazing scenery it has. Look forward to more of your Japan based vlogs.
That window in the fence is just great! I've seen similar in a blind fence around a construction site, well 1 meter high, so the kids can see what's going on there :)
@@joeallam Looking forward to it. Honestly, your love for Japan really shows in the videos that you create. Your channel is great. It shines in Japan. That's how I found you years ago was the "FUJIFILM X100F - Tokyo Street Photography with ShootTokyo" video.
Cheers for the note! I've been hotly anticipating returning to Japan to make videos over the last few years, but at the same time I was cautious not to put too much pressure on the idea of it.
I have been to tokyo once every month since 2010 (i work in an airline) and i still am not bored of it in the slightest! Lots of opportunities for golden shots almost everywhere every time
Oh wow! I'm always fascinated by the lifestyle of cabin crew, especially when it comes to repeated journeys. Do you always stay in the same place when you visit?
Fantastic content Joe! I love seeing Japan through your eyes. I own the XH-2 and that bing bing button would indeed be a welcome change, hopefully in a firmware update. Keep up the good work!
Ikebukaro is the first place.I ever stayed in Japan, and yes it has a.lot going for it, one of the best shots I ever took was coming out of the station in the rain, and you know.a shot that screams out, big seller that for me, great video guys, brings back some great times there, enjoy Japan, hi Elly, the weather here is still mild, and yep...some sunshine!!
Ahhh, amazing - We love Ikebukuro so much! Weather's been surprisingly hard to gauge here too. Keep underestimating the warmth for this time of year compared to London 😅
Great to see you guys back in Japan, it’s a place I enjoy immensely. I worked for Diamaru in Melbourne ant traveled to Japan with them, I love the vibe of Japan, and you capture it perfectly.
Never been so fast to a new video haha Loving the colors as usual and there is always something in Japan, that’s makes it interesting to go out and shoot. With or without people just in awe. And no I’m not envious of you being in Japan while I have still to wait for next year 😭 Enjoy and treat Elly to good coffee, matcha and cake! :D Cheers,
Cheers, Nitin! I've tweaked the colour setup for this vlog and I'm very happy with the result. This might be the fastest I've ever gotten comfortable with a new camera setup! Coffee and cake is always on the cards 🙊
Hello Joe, you mentioned that the two previous videos had such a great response and didn't know if it was because of the XT5 or being in Japan, or as I like to think of it as 'the Joe effect'. You love what you do and that's why we're here.
Your excitement for being back in Japan is infectious. Love it! Can't wait to go back. Also, another vote for Ikebukuro. I have a soft spot for it as it was also the first place I ever stayed in Japan, sleeping on tatami for the first time.
The endpoint for that tram, Minowabashi I think it's called is kind of interesting. The tram is surrounded by roses. I was there a few days ago. The roses aren't at their best at the moment but it's still a cool scene to see the tram with rose bushes around it.
Ahh nice! Someone did actually come up to us and point to a direction opposite to where we were heading at the time saying about roses. Didn’t fully know what they were on about or how far it was, ha!
Beautiful photos and video! If you listen to Kevin Mullins’s interview (on Fujicast) of some of the Fujifilm product designers, the differentiation among the H2, H2S and XT-5 is pretty clear and it makes sense that the H2S auto focus seems more responsive than that of the XT-5. It’s not so much a pecking order as it is a difference in the vision and goals for each of the models. I have not used my XT-4 enough for fast moving subjects (although I have done some practice with it) to feel I’ve really nailed the best set-up for specific use cases. I think lens choice and set-up are key with all of the current, advanced systems. The whole field is developing so fast that it is reasonable to assume that camera body and lens structure and drive compatibility as well as firmware advances will continue to make some brands and models momentarily pull ahead of others in the race toward perfection. I think it is great that Fujifilm actively considers customer feedback and suggestions in their design and improvement of their products.
Great shots around those crosswalks. I loved the film simulation in this one. Agree a “bing bing” button to customise subject tracking would be great addition. I do a lot of bird photography using 70-300mm so the flip up/down screen is my fave. Here in Melbourne I use a 35mm around city. Love my XT2 but thinking XT5 might be worth upgrading at last. Looking forward to more Japan videos.
Loving the look of the X-H2S, never struggles to track your face either! I booked our hotel room right in Ikebukuro because I think in those older vlogs you might have mentioned it was one of the best areas to stay at!? Or maybe I just made it up in my head 😂
Yep! I've been very happy with this camera straight off the bat! Hope you enjoy Ikebukuro - it's honestly got such a great vibe about the place, whilst still feeling quite big and prominent. I also think it's got the best connections for all over Tokyo for sure!
Hey Joe, thanks for the video; I am stoked to see more vlogs about Japan! I wanted to ask you if it's possible to put your shooting settings on top of your images like the ones you did in the past. Shutter Speed, Aperture, ISO, also Focal Lenght if you use a zoom lens. As a fellow photographer, I'd like to see how you manage to shoot such beautiful images. Cheers!
I personally like the tilty screen better than flippy screen, but I hope all manufacturers start using the same mechanism as the Sony A7RV. Flippy and tilty all in one. Adds a tiny bit of thickness, but I’d gladly live with that.
Hi Joe, great content! Thanks for sharing! If you were to keep one camera between the XT5 and the H2S for photography only, which one would you choose based on you experience? Thanks for your advice!
Haha absolutely! There are so many spots I've come across around the world that line up too perfectly for it to be an accident. Would love to know how far they plan these things.
YES! I've sat in the simulator in Nagoya and I'm very keen to see the real thing in person some time. I know they've been doing tests recently too, so maybe I can catch one whilst we're here.
Just a question Joe. I have a X-S10 and I want to upgrade autofocus because I'm trying to approach to wildlife. In your opinion X-T5 has a too small buffer to use for wildlife? I must chose X-H2? Thank for your suggestion
Thanks for the video. I've been used X-T4 for almost 1 year. Compared to Sony A7M3, X-T4 images are little bit soft and very often out of focus. Do you think X-T5's images are sharp enough than X-T4? How do you feel like it...

Cheers! We're definitely trying to get some more projects in line with what we made previously. I think the borders/tourism actually opened up quite abruptly and caught everyone off-guard, so budgets are quite limited until the new year from what I'm hearing.
In terms of feedback, I saw other reviews mention the twisting of the ISO dial inadvertently changes the camera shooting mode. If you've experienced that as well, please flag to Fujifilm! Thanks
Interesting. I haven't noticed that on the one I'm using. Admittedly, I actually use auto ISO most of the time, so don't really interact with that dial much during the daytime.
Hi Joe, could or are you planning to do some summarizing video about your 3-4 months stay in Japan? I don't know, maybe something how is it live in there, what are the difficulties about living in Japan, pinpoint some things, areas, add some stories and etc.? That would be great, at least for me. Oh and by "you" I mean you and Elly of course... (I hate that about english ... 😀 ) Thanks and enjoy your stay!
Yeah, I'm actually hoping to transition the channel a bit with more lifestyle videos to supplement the photo ones. Hopefully it will end up being more videos overall too, as the photo ones just take so long to edit, whereas other styles could come out far quicker with no real impact on the rest of the channel.
As a Swede in November-grey Stockholm, I'm deeply envious of that light, on top of the already flawed perfection that is Japanese big city-aesthetic. Any chance we'll see you tag along with Lukasz from Eyexplore during your stay?
I’m still waiting on Fuji to update the xe4 screen flip setting. When I fold my screen up to shoot from the hip, I can’t have the camera right next to my body or else the screen orientation flips :( PLEASE FUJI
