Back in 2013 I went to a Toronto vs Philly preseason game. I'm from Toronto huge flyers fan, my friend spots Hartnell down watching from the side and so I went down and was so nervous. I went up asked for a picture and he honestly had the biggest smile on his face he asked me if I was a fan and talked to me for about a minute. He is the best hockey player i've ever met in terms of kindness and being respectful towards fans. Huge huge huge respect for him glad to have watched him a few times live.

My friend lived near Detroit and was at a rink where Chris Chelios was watching his son play hockey. He said he and his friend walked up to Chelios just to say they were fans and Chelios refused to even look their way lol. I wish all NHLers could be as cool as Hartnell

I was at Flyers/Rangers Game 7 at the Garden in '14. I'm decked out in my Bobby Clarke throwback jersey. During the warmup skate, Hartnell sees me and, without even asking throws a puck up to me ! It's a Rangers puck, with their logo on it but so what, it's a cool souvenir. Scotty is a Champ !

That story about Torts telling Hartnell he's always out of position on defense then retracting the statement after watching film really speaks volumes. When he coached the Rangers, I followed the team obsessively, and I thought he made a lot of boneheaded, prejudiced decisions like that - decisions that were informed by his feelings rather than by objective reality or the stats. That aside, I liked him as a coach. He was always fun and interesting. His press conferences were worth watching.

Ranger fan here. Torts is great for the first two years wherever he goes. He's great at getting everyone's attention right away and getting the team to play as a team. Years 3-4 or more begin to grate on the players big time and then he wears out his welcome. Albeit he won the cup in Tampa, but he still is a grating coach overall and at this point only good for turning around bad franchises.

Tortz sounds just as bad as I thought he was. If he benches/scratches a player incorrectly due to emotion, he is not a good coach - this is the definition of a bad coach. Coaches should be using evidence to make decisions, not their gut feelings - that brings in a world of bias.
Also, punishing players for making mistakes is a not an effective way to teach players. It might even work at first, but eventually the abuse gets to them mentally and you've lost them entirely.
In both cases, it just sounds like Tortz isn't actually coaching. A Coach needs to provide leadership and mentoring. It doesn't sound like Tortz is doing that at all.

Ok...now, onto the Front Office, which seems to avoid any changes and upgrades. Management thinks that changing coaches every 3-4 years will fix this fractured organization...not gonna happen. There are ex-Flyers in Drafting/Scouting/Player Development/Ticket Sales who bring no value to the club, and have no business being there. Their impact (if you want to call it that) in the draft is blatantly obvious, with the continued failed drafts that we have experienced over nearly the past 10 years. Where's the sense of urgency? There is none! That 'sense' that is taking over this club? COMPLACENCY.
Several coaches came and went during this past decade...but Bob Clarke, Paul Holmgren and a 'cast of thousands' are still here...Why? We all know that Fletcher will exit at some time...but fear not...Danny Briere (an ex-Flyer, surprise, surprise) is ready to take over. Again...Why?
Torts is gonna need a lot of help to fix this mess. Someone of Authority in the Front Office better get a clue...Fast.

Trotz was the best pick. That he turned down the offer doesn't surprise me. He realized the Flyers fans want players who work hard, work hard, muckers and grinders, from Canada, fight at the drop of a hat, etc. EVERYTHING THAT ENEDED IN 1974 WHEN THEY WON THE CUP!!! Anyone watching the Cup finals can see how far away they are. Speed and goaltending win. Physicality, fighting and digging for pucks is ancient history
    BOBBY CLARKE IS GOD!!!
    ALL HAIL MR. SNIDER!!!
    1974-75 WILL NEVER END!!!
THE NHL AND OFFICIALS ARE AGAINST THE FLYERS!!!

Torts is a coach not a babysitter. Even though these players are pros they can still be childish, immature, selfish and unmotivated. I remember a tournament final I coached 25 years ago where I sat a player the whole game because I knew if he went on we would lose. To this day I still feel bad but I did what needed to be done to win. Now a days they don’t even keep score.
