    No vacancy here! Stay away! Too many people, and people are getting grouchy 'cause of the 24/7 rush hour traffic. If you are not in the right lane or going under 65 mph on the freeways, you're dead. May 2022, 94 to 95 degrees already. In some areas, no one speaks English. There is some Big Money here, and if you don't have some of it, it's hard to find decent houses or apartments. Need gasoline? Plan on taking an hour of your time. Pull out of drive, red light 1, red light 2, get gas, the credit card thing won't give you a receipt, go inside the store, etc. Live in a beautiful subdivision? A bit calmer but $$$$, and you drive and drive, and drive to get to anywhere. Pack a lunch and dinner or like I have done if I have to go across town for a meeting, appointment, I stay in a motel rather fight 24/7 rush hour traffic where I get in the wrong lane and the 18 wheeler is on my tail and I have to drive to San Antonio to turn around and come back. You'll see. Good things: If you are wanting to taste food from countries you've never heard of, come on down. If you want a service, specialist, or to buy something and it exists, you can find it here. Be prepared to spend the day driving in 24/7 rush hour to get it. Need a doctor? There are specialists here for diseases you didn't know existed. Make an appointment, drive and drive and try and try to park, and remember where you car is; then wait 2+ hours to see doctor. Bring something to do and eat or curl up in the waiting room chair and sleep. Welcome to Texas, ya all. Sincerely, A Native. Oh BTW if you are from New Jersey or certain boroughs in New York, we love you, but ditch the accent and learn to talk like us, through you nose. You'll do a lot better.

    I live in Puerto Rico and am seriously considering moving. What's funny to me is that all those "cons" are literally daily life here (which really isn't all that bad when you think about it, some of them even good). Only we have it worse because we're also in the line of fire for hurricanes and pay 3 times as much for electricity, yet it doesn't work properly on a regular day. Hurricane Maria left me and my family without electricity for 4 months!

    I bought my land and built my home 25 years ago here in Texas,my wife and I are too old to start over but we are being forced to do just that as we are being forced to move out of our home that we love. I have lived here all of my life,I am a native Texan. My property taxes have skyrocketed because of all of the people moving here and now I cannot afford to pay the property taxes to stay in my home that I was going to retire and live out the remainder of my life. Why should I be forced into poverty and lose my home to rich snobs moving here who are screwing up our quality of life and driving up the price of everything? The property taxes alone is making it to where our young people who do not have rich parents to foot the bill cannot afford to pay rent nor own a home of their own here in the new state of Taxes/California! We native Texans who are retired simply cannot avoid moving out of Texas because our corrupt Local Governments and Criminal Governor is getting rich off this criminal and immoral process of gentrification!

      Retired Native Texan who shares your concern but Gov Abbott is not the problem. Our property taxes are local county and city taxes. We have had better economies in tough times with Republican leadership. The problem is out of state buyers willing to pay over inflated prices jacking up appraisals then dragging their Blue state politics, that ruined their home state, with them.

    • @mediterraneanworld
      @mediterraneanworld 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      The fundamental reason that property taxes are so high is that Texas does not have a state income tax; it's one of only seven states in the nation without one. Instead, we pay for government through two main sources of revenue: sales tax and property tax.

    Grew up inside the loop (in-town-urban living)in H-town, over thirty-five years plus! This once was a good place to be despite the weather and lack of scenic beauty. I understand many-many-many people are moving here. And, this is the exact reason that Houston is no longer a friendly place to be. Crime, construction, and traffic are a nightmare. I can't wait to get out of here and will sell this summer. If you like an uber big city with tons of crime, traffic, heat, and humidity then keep coming here.

    Moved from California to Texas about two years ago. I am in a low humidity small town in NW Panhandle, the bugs are no joke and dangerous, but wearing shoes, and bug spray, and keeping them out of your home isn't that difficult. Scams in Texas are a big problem since there is little to no protection for an average citizen and Texas likes to take advantage of this in real estate, rentals, and even utility companies. It's absolutely a buyer beware state. Also, the irrigation is nonexistent, there are no drain pipes, no gutters, and nothing to help the water flow when it rains hard. The last thing I would point out is the drivers... they have some very dangerous habits while driving but luckily nearly every road is flat and straight as far as the eye can see.

    • @pravachan4355
      @pravachan4355 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is very good irrigation in the Houston area. It floods sometimes because:
      1. In the old neighborhoods the homes are not build up from the street height.
      2. The rain pours down too heavily and it overwhelms the drainage. Like during Harvey we got 52" of rain in like a 2-3 days, and the hurricane was stationary and that is the only time I have seen that. I would stay away from neighborhoods that have previously flooded.

    2 important adds: traffic and change. If traffic bothers you, Houston or any of Texas large cities will drive you bonkers. And you should be aware that the entire state is constantly re-inventing itself...cattle, energy, medicine, tech... Who knows what is next, but it will be different. I am from Austin. Was born here in 1956 and have lived here most of my life. You is putting a VERY pretty face on Houston and not showing all of it. The Museums and Johnson Space Center. I'm not seeing Katy and Montrose and Channelview or Pasadena(Stinkadena) and La Porte. The Houston Ship Channel. Chemical Plants and Refineries. I-610 at 5:30 pm on Friday. You DO show the nice places that you may live in IF you have the funds. But you are not showing the massive apartment complexes and condos that stretch on forever right next to the endless strip malls next to Cabela's and Wal Mart. And did I mention the refineries..... I love my Home State and especially the Texas Hill Country west of Austin, but there are unsightly parts just like everywhere else. Massive trailer parks and old run down subdivisions. You must sell Real Estate or Moving Services. I love my Hometown, but I do not live there and rarely visit. Too many People, too high prices and too much traffic. So I live in the sticks out by the lake....no, NOT Lakeway. LOL And you forgot about HEB, although they are not as prevalent in the Houston Metro. I know People that would move to Texas just for HEB alone. And please mention the Tropical Storms and flooded Bayous because they tend to trip up newcomers. Could mention the zoning laws in Harris County as well. I hear those are a drawing point as well. Here in Travis County it's a WHOLE other story when it comes to zoning. Best of luck to you and your Family. Drainage is everything on the coast.

    I moved to an area northeast of DFW/McKinney two years ago to retire. Here are my observations:
    1) If you follow the law and do the right things, Texas is going to give you a great life
    2) If you do not follow rules or laws, Texas is not a place for you and will give you a horrible life
    3) If you choose not to assimilate to the Texas way of life or respect it, you will be miserable here
    4) If you don't know what a Homestead Exemption is, learn about it and apply for one tooth sweet
    5) If you have a dog your dog will be very happy! Dog parks are everywhere in all communities
    6) If you haven't visited a Bucee's yet, you are not a true Texan!
    7) A majority of TX in the north is in Tornado Alley. Have a plan and be prepared for crazy weather
    8) TX homes require a lot of routine maintenance (HVAC, pest control, etc...). Budget accordingly
    9) Texans in general are not very vocal. But if you bring up politics on your own, expect an earful
    10) TX humidity isn't that bad and only lasts roughly four months of the year. Budget your AC expense
    Finally, if you are a 100% disabled veteran Texas is the best place to be and is also the best kept secret. 100% disabled veteran's receive a free DOL, free vehicle plates and are exempt form ALL TEXAS PROPERTY TAXES!

    I have moved from NY (Long Island) to North Dallas-McKinney. It is so clean here and the roadway are in much better condition then NY. I don’t miss potholes! I definitely agree about the land scape here being so flat, and although they have a lot of lakes, I do miss the ocean. But the most surprising negative thing that I have noticed is the rude and dangerous drivers! For people that are so nice, what happens to them when they get behind that wheel? There is never a fender bender here, it’s always a major accident! The speed limit is way too high! I thought I was a savvy NY driver…Oh was I wrong. The construction crews also make it worse by not giving ample notice of a lane closures. That definitely needs to be added to the list.

    • @pjrichards3974

      For some the friendliness does turn to road rage behind the wheel. I was on the freeway and this guy came across 3 lanes tried to run me to the shoulder and stayed beside me for awhile down the freeway trying to run me off the road. I had tinted windows and it was evening so I know he couldn't see me but later in line at a store a guy in front of me turned and offered to pay for my few items in hand .. and it was him so friendly and sweet. I was scared as crap and kindly said thanks but no thanks. Weird.

      THe roads in NY (in general) are far better than in Houston - where in the most expensive neighborhoods you have huge potholes, poorly done patchwork and tiny lanes to support a lot of traffic. I imagine you are in a newer part of Dallas that was well-planned - which Houston was and is not - city planning should be on the list as one of Houston's big deficits, which is quite sad as it had/has the potential to be a real workd-class city but the transport question is constantly looming.

  • @colscott5016
    @colscott5016 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    2 points:
    1. We do have mountains, you just have to travel far west towards Big Bend/Guadalupe mountains national parks and they won’t be as big as the ones from Idaho but still beautiful.
    2. It’s not humid in all of Texas. In fact, most of Texas isn’t that humid to be honest. It’s pretty much just the eastern side. The more you travel west the less humid it is. If you’re looking for drier climates, El Paso is a great spot. It was rated the safest city in the country at one point a couple years ago. Texas is a very diverse state in terms of landscapes.

My son lived in Seabrook and the Apt he lived in was right on the water and at the time his rent was really low compared to where we live in Virginia. I will be relocating from Sacramento but lived everywhere in California, L.A, S.F., and San Diego. Sacramento summers are pretty unbearable as well and winters are very cold. Having served in the military and being stationed in the Philippines I get the humidity. you never really get used to it, you just bear it. I also get the bugs and mosquitos, I would just be sure to spray the repellent. Houston summer weather reminds me of the Philipines including the tropical storms and hurricanes. Still considering the relo but I do like the cost of living and affordable housing. I will be reaching out to you if it looks like it's going to happen. Again great informative video!

Once I move I need air conditioning and heating. The utility bill on top of the cheaper rent will make my rent prices nearly the same level as California if I was to live in Texas. Then you add in the US supreme court is about to make high capacity magazines legal and conceal carry shall issue in California and I have no reason to leave because the gun laws will be almost as good as Texas. Property taxes are higher in Texas than where I live in California.

    Actually lived in Houston for just over 16 years from 1963-79. It was an experience and a half! I lived in the Sandalwood/Lakeview subdivision in the Spring Branch-Memorial area. It has three lakes just off Buffalo Bayou. There used to be a fourth lake; King's Lake just off Gessner and Buffalo Bayou. They filled it in. It made a comeback the hard way when Hurricane Harvey hit! When Harvey struck, Houston was one messed up city!!!

    I am a long time Houstonian. Every day I pray for my son as he is a lineman here in Houston. I pray for his safety, not just the actual job safety as he has many stories where guns are involved. I agree with having guns for protection, but just sayin'. Do your research before you move here find the right area.

      Watching this video I thought of that as perhaps the worst thing about the city, in a city so rich with opportunity and diversity but yet suffers from terrible violent crime - and that as you mention there are parallel universes here.

    Live in the northern part of the state to avoid the flooding. Also if you live in Houston get a standby generator. It's pricey but worth it. When there is a storm and the lights go out, in about 10 to 12 seconds I have lights. As to property taxes the politicians aren't going to tax the rich because they have accepted their money. So they turn to the middle and lower class in the form of property taxes. The rich can afford it. It is what it is.

    The weather (both the heat and the depressing grey winters) and distances (driving and really bad roads) are probably the worst thing. People are nice but I think that has something to do with everyone being from somewhere else - and needing to fit in as well as well as make new friends and contacts.
