      It really is great! Could use some tweaks but a wonderful game. Never played the original when it was out, but did play Machiavelli the Prince, which shares a ton of similarities and I had a blast playing as a kid.

      I'd love if the mini games had more variety. Barring that, the added dancing mini game should be either shorter or optional.

      +Andreas Scott - that was what i thought too.. keep the game mechanics (land battles, sacking cities, marriage and so forth) but make the sea battles/swordfights look like in black flag... after i played black flag i actually started playing pirates again and it would be awesome if the make a remake with upto-date graphics...

      Especially on PC I just bought it on PC and on a modern keyboard a lot of keys don’t work, so I’m kinda just having to click the tabs and it’s really hard. But the Pc version is sadly was superior to the Xbox my original version. Playing it again it really still has its charm. I wish they’d make a new one but they’d just ruin it with over complication and micro transactions

      Funnily enough, there is a pirate game named "Blood and Gold: Caribbean!" which uses a nearly identical engine and game system as all other Mount&Blade games. I had wondered about the legality of them using that engine, however it seems that the members of the team had previously worked on M&B: WF&S in their time with Snowberry Connection. Don't get your hopes up though, "Blood and Gold: Caribbean!" isn't what I'd call a magnum opus of the Mount&Blade series. It's mostly bland and rough-around-the-edges; The only thing it has going for it is proper musket-play. The most excitement I had from it were the assassination contracts, in which you rent a room just above the streets, waiting patiently for your mark to trott past you as you fire your single shot- hoping to land it perfectly. Although, I can say that the economic simulation is more in depth than any other M&B game I've played. The real issue I have is the fact that it's essentially just a M&B mod for $20 and that it's quality is fairly worse compared to the myriad of beautifully diverse game-worlds which have been created with the M&B engine. Given that it's $4 on the Steam Summer Sale right now, I'd buy it if you want a complete set of M&B games. Whilst I know it is not an official entry, it uses the exact same engine and game systems and was developed by previous developers of M&B: WF&S, so I consider it a M&B game or at least a spin-off.

    Fun Fact: Sid Meier has based all of his games on his favorite books, movies and TV series he has known since his youth. PIRATES ! is based on Daniel Defoe: The Adventures of Captain Singleton.; the author of Robinson Crusoe Most of the Hollywood Pirate movies were also based on this classic. The major melody in the game is an old Chanty called SPANISH MAIN ( = another name for the Carabean Sea )

    The funniest thing you can do is turn every port's allegiance to Dutch when playing with 1560 as you starting era. The Netherlands were still part of the Spanish Empire until 1581.

    • @MisterTutor2010

It's a really sentimental game for me, and i played the shit out of the remake on pc, and my dad and i both separately perfected the game on swashbuckler, amazing fun, definitely one of my top games ever. It's such a genuine and adventurous experience start to finish, a whole different breed from most games today.

  • @nastrael
    @nastrael 8 ปีที่แล้ว +59

    Technically, chain-shot is for *masts* not sails. The idea being that when you shoot them, the shot whips around and tears the shit out of the masts causing them to become unstable and fall over. This completely immobilizes the ship and requires the construction of an entirely new mast as opposed to just ripping holes in the sailcloth, which is easily patched. The only way to move a demasted ship is to tow it with either rowboats or another ship.

    • @allanfloyd8103
      @allanfloyd8103 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Well, since sail damage and losing a mast are part of the same damage track, it's all good.

    • @PelletProof
      @PelletProof 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      As an additional bonus, if you miss, you'll slow them down due to their sail being full of holes now.

    • @Muck006

      Actually ... chain shot is used against the rigging, because you cant use sails if your rigging is stuck or cut.

  • @boris978
    @boris978 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I haven't watched the whole video yet but here are some comments regarding Quill's decisions and his own comments(you are still my favorite youtuber so don't worry): 1. Choosing Dutch does give you more targets, but it is also harder to capture towns and board enemy ships. The Dutch, at some period of time, only have 1 town and 1 settlement, the town is one of the wealthiest and the most prosperous town in the whole Caribbean archipelago and so is the settlement. But what does that mean exactly you might ask. Well that means, other nations won't have a lot to gain by declaring war on the Dutch so wars are rare, on the other hand, there are only one town and one settlement separating the Dutch from survival or total annihilation, so wars may be more frequent. It also means the townsfolk will be satisfied and they won't have any wishes for a better life, decreasing the amount of recruits you can recruit. And you need a lot of recruits to storm other strong towns. With so few enemies or so many enemies the player faces the risk of getting less promotions or keep losing to overwhelming numbers of enemies. 2. Quill did not explain difficulty settings quite right. Yes opponents become more cunning and tactical in sea battles, faster and better at swordfighting, opponent's armies get cavarly and cannons in land battles and basicaly everything gets harder yet more rewarding. But with every difficulty level more and more features are added to the game, when starting a swordfight you can choose what type if weapon you will choose (journeyman) and new dances are introduced etc. (I was writting this on mobile device so please forgive my mistakes and spelling ones too as English is far from my second language). Thank you for reading !

    • @boris978
      @boris978 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh and now that I have reached the naval battle part of video, fighting enemy crew head to head is far from neccesary. You can: 1. Completely destroy enemy ship 2. Destroy their sails making them impossible to move and just ripe to harvest, or in this case finish off or board 3. Kill all their crew and thus make them surrender 4. Kill most of their crew and then ram them thus making them surrender. 5. Being a great sea devil figting with ship as skillful as with sword making their morale waiver and thus making them surrender or 5. Dirrectly boarding them, or weaken them before that and then board them, duel with their captain and then either seize the ship and cargo or sink them to the bottom of the sea.

    I can give you some real smart game play tips: First you need to find war canoes because they travel extremely fast and you can catch any ship. Time is of the essence and i pretty much did everything in less than 2 years in gametime. Barometer and cotton sail are also important. Find a mysterious traveller who sells you a map of your family members. Your family members will either pop up anywhere between Gibraltar and Cumana, or Santiago and Santo Domingo. Make sure you buy a map from places nearby. If the part of the map shows water than you can figure out in what places to look. Puerto Cabello always has family members so the best thing to do is sail in this area to find all 4 quickly. Your last family member gives you the whereabouts of Montalban. Dance with one of the ladies for the lost city map and you're ready to sail west. Montalban's hideout or all the lost cities are anywhere between Gran Granada and Villa Hermosa or Campeche. Conquer these cities so you can dance with the ladies in order to get new maps. Be smart and do everything on foot instead of sailing. Walking from Campeche all the way to Granada takes about 2 months... sailing takes a lot longer than that. You can find your family and all cities in about 2 years. Another tip is to conquer cities so you can appoint a governor. If you picked english and attacked a spanish city than keep appointing governors anything besides english. You will get a promotion, leave the city, attack and appoint another governor. You will reach all 8 ranks of all countries pretty fast.

    I remember watching my dad play this game when I was a kid, and when I was old enough to understand how to play he set me up on it. I could not get enough of this game. Sadly I have misplaced the disc, but seeing this makes me want to repurchase.

    Those east winds always got to my nerves pretty much. Also didn't like the week of time spent in a port.
    In all it was pretty fun. I got some good dance moves out of it ^^

    Im looking fut a very similar game. It was launched before 2000. It was settled in central america. You could play as a pirate or corsair, and select one of four nationalities: french, spaniard, dutch or portuguese. You had one ship and you needed to travel between ports to achieve your mission. Inside the ship it was 1st person, but in towns it was kinda 'click a building to go there'. Sometimes, dialogs pops, teaching you history about towns, and the life of a pirate.

    Don’t sell the ships. You keep attacking until the navy comes after you. They will come in huge ships but only 3 or 4 at first. I can’t remember what they’re called. If you get 10 frigates you can beat it. Then you capture those ships and get a navy of your own. Eventually you can end up stronger than all countries on your own.

    your 1st mistake was at 18:50, never welcome additional crew unless going into a specific swordfight battle. The more men you have in your crew, the faster your unhappiness increases and the sooner you must "divide the plunder" in port. And, the lower your score. Youl need to operate with few crew on board to make the dueling challenging and get a real score if your interest in learning pirates for real. The ultimate challenge and best part of the game is attacking a colony in force with a tiny band and bending its nation allegiance to fit your current game.
